One tonne scrum

Do you think we'll eventually reach the point of a 1000-kilo pack?
I was trying to put together a set of current forwards from world rugby who would tip the scales at a metric tonne but am coming up short, I think mostly because I have trouble spelling the Tongan surnames.

The new scrum laws are favouring smaller props but seconds and backrows are getting ever bigger.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,919 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Pulled in a few second division players to make up the numbers but the weights of 3 and 8, listed on their club websites, are debatable.

    1 Soane Tonga'uhia 133
    2 Bismarck Du Plessis 114
    3 Uini Atonio 155
    4 Will Skelton 135
    5 Sébastien Vahaamahina 126
    6 Mamuka Gorgodze 120
    7 Schalk Burger 120
    8 Opeti Fonua 140
    Pack total 1043

This is my attempt at the heaviest Irish qualified scrum we could field..

    1. Jack McGrath (122kg)
    2. Marty Moore (123kg) (will need to practice his darts :o)
    3. Mike Ross (127kg)
    4. Devin Toner (124kg)
    5. Mike McCarthy (115kg)
    6. Stephen Ferris (116kg)
    7. Iain Henderson (115kg)
    8. Leo Auva'a (127kg)

    969kg scrum :(

You need to average 125kg, only two players I know of above that...

You'd have to pick Damian Browne in the second row. A monster of a man.

Nice! :D Let's see if we can do it!

    1. Jack McGrath (122kg)
    2. Marty Moore (123kg)
    3. Mike Ross (127kg)
    4. Devin Toner (124kg)
    5. Damien Browne (125kg) (+10kg from McCarthy)
    6. Stephen Ferris (116kg)
    7. Iain Henderson (115kg)
    8. Leo Auva'a (127kg)

979kg scrum, is there an extra 21kg we can squeeze in there? Any monster flankers?

Dare I suggest it.. but for the sake of an additional 11kg you could recall Tony Buckley..

    .. As a flanker

Probably better than as a prop! ;)

In fact, if he replaces Henderson, you have your tonne.

Buckley a great call!! I'll try and keep it as playable / realistic as possible (although already a couple of major leaps being made in compromise!)

    1. Tony Buckley (138kg) (+16kg from Jack McGrath!!)
    2. Marty Moore (123kg)
    3. Mike Ross (127kg)
    4. Devin Toner (124kg)
    5. Damien Browne (125kg)
    6. Stephen Ferris (116kg)
    7. Iain Henderson (115kg)
    8. Leo Auva'a (127kg)

995kg scrum, 5kg short, even if we're really compromising a fair bit of quality for weight here!! :D

There's gotta be a 120kg+ backrow out there? Can Nick Williams become Irish qualified? Switching him in for Henderson would land us exactly on the tonne!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

I'm sorry, but you can't have Marty Moore in the hooker. I know this is a fictional discussion, but that's taking it too far.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,718 ✭✭✭Taco Corp

is Moore only 123? surely a man that square has to be a bit more that that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,636 ✭✭✭✭Tox56

is Moore only 123? surely a man that square has to be a bit more that that?

Guy is only 5'10, he looks more 'square' than a lot of props but he's a lot shorter than most, Ross is 6'2 for example, McGrath and Healy are both 6'1 I think

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

He looks like he's lost a bit of size since entering the international fold. Probably just turning some fat into muscle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,193 ✭✭✭[Jackass]

Muscle weighs more than fat, I'd say it's more a case of getting a bit "fitter". Kind of like Stan Wright when he joined Leinster, he lost a fair few hefty kg's before he peaked at his best. There's a trade off between weight and power, Healy being a prime example of being a pretty light weight prop by international standards, but it's all compressed power.

God damn it for not letting me away with Moore at 2 by the way.

    1. Tony Buckley (138kg)
    2. Damien Varley (110kg) (-13kg from Moore )
    3. Mike Ross (127kg)
    4. Devin Toner (124kg)
    5. Damien Browne (125kg)
    6. Stephen Ferris (116kg)
    7. Iain Henderson (115kg)
    8. Leo Auva'a (127kg)

983kg scrum, an extra 17kg needs to be found in that back-row!! (unless anyone can find a heavier hooker)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

Said he lost a bit of size, didn't say he lost a bit of weight. The difference in how he looked at the start of the year and how looks now is very noticeable.

    I'll take it!

    1. Tony Buckley (138kg)
    2. Damien Varley (110kg)
    3. Stuart Maguire (128kg) (+1kg from Ross)
    4. Devin Toner (124kg)
    5. Damien Browne (125kg)
    6. John Madigan (119kg) (+4kg from Henderson)
    7. Stephen Ferris (116kg)
    8. Leo Auva'a (127kg)

    988kg

We need a backrow weighing 128kg, or a heavier hooker to lower that target!

Just like the Guinness Book of Records, we're very picky on sources so it must be from Wikipedia :pac: Failing that, the official club profile. All of mine are taken from Wikipedia with exception of Hagz's ones taken from official sites.

McComb is 105kg with Ulster site.

    If I can't have Moore at hooker, there's NO WAY you're having Ed O'Donoghue at 7!! :D

Although I'd swap him in for "Madigan" as he's the same weight and I've never heard of this Madigan fella. (Munster academy iirc from earlier)

Not sure but if it wasn't an SA pack it would be Samoan, Tongan or maybe Georgian.

Would have thought it'd have to be an islander pack. SA produce monsters who are muscle bound power houses but generally around the 120kg mark. They don't produce the 130kg+ units that seem to appear regularly in islander packs.

You can put Ben Tameifuna in as a prop. 140kg. His Chiefs teammate Ben Afeaki was 145kg at school and has slimmed down to a svelte 128kg.

124 seems a little on the light side for Toner. If I remember correctly, he was listed at that weight two years back, and I'd say he's gained a bit since then.

The funniest thing is imagining the heaviest pack above, up against a genuine quality (but lightweight) pack. In spite of having a 100/200 Kg advantage you'd still wonder if they'd get destroyed in the scrum.

Yeah I think you would struggle to make a pack of professional players that is under 800kg let alone 750.

Unless you are talking 7s rugby.

Proportionality in mind; Devin Toner is rather light.

    wouldnt say that at all

by wiki toner is 0.587 kgs per cm
POC is 0.555 kgs per cm

and i dare say that Toner is heavier now than those stats say.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,919 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Mas, Tipuric, Furno, Strauss... may be possible to break under 800 with a decent international team.

Just wondering who is lifting those locks at USAP? 267kg combined!

    1 Buckley 101
    2 Sean Henry 101
    3 Loughney 115
    4 Browne 110
    5 M.Kearney 112
    6 Heenan 99

the same squad could be 922 kg max, and still it's unrealistic... very light players in the west

    JP Cooney 120
    Jack Dineen 110
    Ah You 123
    Swift 117
    Clarke 115
    Muldowney 114
