Can anyone recommend what the best 1/1.2 litre petrol car? I'm just looking for a little run around car that's cheap to run and maintain. Unfortunately I've only €2000 budget.

    Any recommendations?

Renault Clio MK2. Great little 1.2 engine. Reliable enough and won't have rusted to pieces like an early 2000s ford. Easy to insure too.

Panda and the Yaris are others to consider too.

Thanks guys, I'm leaning towards the Yaris or Festa.

Just be wary of Fiestas of that vintage. Most if not all would have rust at this stage.

A mk1 yaris is the best 1.0 Imo.

What year? I'd choose a Clio/Yaris/Jazz over any corsa. They're just better cars.

Yeah I have an 03 Corsa C 1.2 near a year and it's done about 10k without any trouble avoid the 1.0. Try and get an SXI one with the nice seats, fogs, etc

You'll make most of your money back on a Yaris too, they hold their value very well. Expect even a 00 model to fetch close to 2k

    Another yaris vote

The only thing I don't like about the Yaris which otherwise makes it a great car is it looks. Never liked them

They're only a facelift of the 94 model.

Slow. Well built. Not as economical as the yaris. Expensive. No more reliable than the yaris.

I have been looking on Donedeal for a while now and the polo is usually cheaper then the yaris?, was just wondering if there is a significant difference between the two.

They're polar opposites in some ways.

The yaris is high tech (relatively) with digital speedo, variable valve timing, high seating position etc, where the polo trys to be upmarket, feeling solid but ultimately underpowered and underequipped.
The polo puts out about 45hp vs 65 for the yaris.

Both cars got a 4 star NCAP safety rating.

The Yaris looks like a real granny's car tho I think :-( That's the only reason I'm considering the festa.

Daihatsu Sirion. If you dont mind the styling you'll have a cracker of a car and probably enough money left over for a holiday.

The newer (current) model sirion can often be found for under €2k
    They're quite nice looking.
Old one is quite ugly though.

You see quite a few young fellas driving them though. They're very good for what they are(hence they hold their price v well).

The Focus now comes in a 1.0 engine, and the Golf a 1.2 engine.

Polos havent been too reliable for friends I know that had one. Also you want to spend thousands to save potentially nothing on tax?!!! Small engines on cc are cheap tax! Id go for yaris. Or maybe Mitsubishi colt?

I consider the Fiesta more of a granny's / 'church car park' car. But then again, I'm biased as I've driven three different Yaris, a 1999 model, a 2005 model and the 2008 Diesel. Neither of the 1.0L Petrol's gave any trouble except a water pump in the 2005 (It did have high mileage and only reason it was 'retired' was due to a crash, in which is performed perfectly) I still have the 1999 with over 100,000 miles on it and its still working away fine. Did the yearly service last week (Oil, Filter and Plugs) and they are no bother to do yourself. So maintenance is low cost and easy. There are two engines between the 1999 to 2005, and I believe the first one was a French engine and is considered the better of the two. That said, I've driven both and neither gave trouble.

Lastly, Yaris is a actually a good bit of fun to drive. Its not fast, never will be but its has some fun poke and its decent in the corners (By comparison to its counterparts) Always makes me smile even if your sometimes laughing at, not with :pac:

All the Phase 1 MK2s were hydraulic pumped and the Phase two was electric with the exception of the 1.2 8v/16v engines (D7F/D4F engines)

Yaris seems to be the best on the market for a small petrol car. My sister used to drive a 1.4 litre petrol ford focus and I must say it was very slow and sluggish and it was very hard on petrol. What's the Yaris like on petrol? It won't be anything like the focus I hope?

The engine in the mk1 Yaris is Toyota's own vvti unit. There was never a French engine in them. The cars themselves were manufactured in France from around early/mid 2001 though.

The newer mk2 yaris had a diahatsu designed 3 cylinder unit. This is a good unit in it's own right but imo is not as good as the 4 cylinder unit in the mk1.
