    Just got a new UP!:D
VW doing great deal with 0% finance and 3yrs (3 services 15,30,45k) free servicing.

There is loads of room in it for 4 adults comfortably, looking forward to cheaper tax, petrol & other running costs.
paid over 4k in road tax over the last 5 years , this car will probably cost me less than that for everything inc petrol & insurance over a similar timeframe. :D

    I dont work for VW.

HAPPY DAYS but if you say it will cost you less you are not right - you will loose 7€ just on depreciation after 3 years. You can never do saving by buying brand new car from financial point of view. It will cost you much more.

Not that I could ever bring myself to buy a new car or personally drive a tiny car ahead of a nice big car but a 10 year old 2l passat over 3 years doing a pretty big mileage could cost you €7k more in repairs, servicing , tax, insurance, tyres, petrol, depreciation etc than running a new UP!

I drove quite a few when I was working in a skoda garage last year. Mostly citigos. Of the citigo, up and mii , if I had to buy one it would have been the mii . They tended to come with the colour coded dash and were slightly cheaper I think ( or more willing to discount maybe).

You have to rag them a bit to get them going. The stupid semi auto box all the rentals had is awful and I'd nirmally take any car as an auto over the manual but not one of those.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 625 ✭✭✭roadsmart

Drove a rental one last month down to Cork, best little car I've driven in years, very economical with a surprising turn of speed. Enjoy your purchase OP, and fcuk the begrudgers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

With the pcp finance, I'm guessing the future projected value on the up vs the citigo/mii makes up for the bit in the difference new?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Well wear, drive a mii a few years back and was well impressed with it.

They'd be class with a TSI engine!

Audi will be releasing same this year.

& I think UP! Will have a special GTI version with a turbocharged 1ltr engine.

Sadly there will be no Citigo VRS, otherwise Vectra would be all over that!

Congratulations OP, saw it on Top Gear the other week and it looked nice.

I look forward to possibly test driving one in the future, probably be 15 years before it's in my price range though!:D

Out of interest, what sort of interior spec did it come with? AC/Cruise/Bluetooth?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Im sure it can fit 4 adults alright but wouldnt want to attempt any overtaking manouvers or even going up a hill with 4 adults in an UP.

Also, i'd imagine 0-60 would be measured on a calendar!!

I dont consider cars such as these "real" cars.

well the missus driving one for almost 2 years now and never a bother, plenty of room for 4 adults you would have to get in one to see how roomy they are, from the outside it is deceiving. Granted this is no power rocket but it has 75hp, we had a 2010 polo that only had 70hp and was a good bit heavier.

Thanks everyone for the positive responses.

Well excuse me for having an opinion.

I don't consider a 999cc 3 cylinder engine anything other than a glorified shopping trolley.

I think cars such as these with 4 adult occupants are nothing short of dangerous.

What? Am i obliged to pat somebody on the back because they got a new car.

Just plan your overtakes then sure? Fair enough it's going to be slower than cars bigger than it but that's a given. It's never going to be dangerous unless the driver makes it dangerous, in which case it's nothing to do with the car.

Drove rigid lorries occasionally in the old job and if you think the UP! is slow your thinking wrong.

well, it is very unlikely there will ever be 4 adults in this car, however if i find myself in that situation along with the need to overtake someone I will take on board your thoughts, plus my 30 years accident free driving experience.

Which bit of the 8 yr old car will have much the cheaper tax, fuel costs and insurance, no nct costs, free servicing and a brand new set of tyres?

We are talking about over 3 years.

The costs will be less, yes, but not free.

I found the needle on the citigo's dropped quite quickly tbh. Especially if it saw a motorway.

The €7,000 depreciation goes a long way to running the 8 year old car you already own was the point. Moreso when you add the petrol, tax and insurance of the new car to that, so anther few grand means probably over 10k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭readytosnap

I have saved money absolutely no doubt, I know what I am talking about been driving a long time, I am averaging approx 10k a year mileage.
BMW tax for 3 years 2130 (at todays rates) VW 570
NCT for BMW jan 2014 & jan 2016 & Jan 2017 approx 200 presuming it passes each time. NCT for VW 0
Service for BMW over 3 years 1000 (minumum) for VW 0
naturally depreciation is gonna happen on both. 06 BMW prob worth 8/9k max after 3 yrs with extra 30k miles 4K? VW 3yrs old with 30k gotta be worth 8k (based on the 8k the missus was offered as a trade for her 2yr old 3 dr up with 50k on it)
petrol costs too complicated for me to work out.
    so excluding the petrol
I reckon the the costs are roughly 3500 for BMW 570 for the VW
plus the BMW is just coming out of warranty (approved used 2yr bmw warranty) soo anything goes wrong I gotta foot the bill and as I have had several BMW's I know that they can be expensive to repair.
Vw will be under warranty for the 3 years.
Insurance would be much the same on both. but the petrol costs will deffo be higher in the BMW.
At least thats my take on things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭pippip

We are talking about over 3 years.

there is still no comparison, an eight year old car would also be in for timing belt, clutch, alternator, new battery etc problems over the next three years.

yes not free but considerably less.

Service for BMW over 3 years 1000 (minumum) for VW 0.

3 oil and filter changes (which is what you get with the Up) is not going to cost you €1000 in the BMW. If it is your going to the wrong place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

The Up is equally unlikely to need other bits like suspension parts, timing belts, tyres or develop faults like an 8 year-old car (BMW or not!) can and which are usually fairly expensive to put right. Even if it does, it'll be covered under his warranty, something which long since expired on his last car.

But bottom line here is the OP bought what he wanted and shouldn't have to explain or justify his decision to posters here.

280 euros for air and oil by bmw x3 is 840, not counting the fact that the car also is going to need (in the next 12 months) new tyres 500? and possibly brakes 462 @ BMW theres another grand.

I have always had all work done on any car I have ever owned by the main stealers whose vehicle it was and those prices for BMW are correct as of today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

OP well wear. I need a bigger car for the boot space but a buddy of mine has one. He drove me to a hurling match and twisted has ankle so I drove it back. It really was fun to drive it. If I didnt need the extra room, I would consider one of these myself as I spend 2500 a year on petrol (I would save a grand here), 514 on tax (save 300 here), probably save a couple of hundred on insurance and the up has a longer service interval.

I was surprised how spacious and comfortable she was too. And this is coming from someone who dislikes most vw cars with few exceptions. My friend has a good few miles clocked up and has had not bother with it.

No one has to justify anything. It's just a friendly discussion on running costs.ive already said I'd drive new cars if I could afford them .

I don't tend to consider running costs when buying cars. If I did I wouldn't be driving an s80, and a petrol one at that. I'd buy a brand new one tomorrow if I could.

like I said. Wrong place :-) not much point massively overpaying on an 8 year old car.

At the end of the day, for the 10k I reckon you'd easily at least break even. It just comes down towhich one , you'd rather spend the 3 years in.

I think the UP is nice also. Given the right spec levels (like most cars!!), it can look great. The problem for me, like others is the cost. While it MAY be cheaper in the long run to buy a brand new car on PCP finance, you still need several thousand to start the plan. Then I start thinking... hey I could buy a whole car with the deposit!

Congrats OP! You should post a pic of the car.
