    There are probably few DJs that fit these words better than Monika Kruse. For more than 23 years, the ‘Grand dame of Techno’ has been an integral part of the German electronic music scene. ‘Traces’ isn’t just the title of her latest album, but also relates to the past, present and future of one of the most interesting pioneers of German popular culture.

    But first things first.

    Monika Kruse was born in Berlin in 1971, she grew up in Munich and from an early age felt an affinity to music. While studying sociology at the beginning of the nineties, Monika started her DJ career as one of the first generation of house DJs. After starting up her own illegal parties and legendary ‘Housetram’ events, Monika quickly gained recognition and was offered residencies at ‘Babalu’ and ‘Ultraschall Club’ in Munich. Monika Kruse now had a loyal following of fans. Her reputation as a sound-emotional ambassador coupled with her integral perception of music - between dance music and house - soon found international attention. Whether at Japan`s biggest rave, ‘Wire’ or during numerous Love Parade main stage appearances, as well as at Nature One, Underground Fusion Festival, Carl Cox and friends at Space Ibiza or at the Berghain/Panorama bar (where she became resident after moving to Berlin), Monika has made her mark.

    Her deep, hypnotic beats, driving percussions and touch of funkiness got Monika voted as one of the most adored DJs worldwide. With more than 320,000 followers on Facebook, Monika says that, ‘For me the allure of DJing has not changed at all during the last 23 years. I still feel like some kind of positive apprehension because no night is like the other. The interchange of energy between the dance floor and me as DJ is unique and something very special.”

    As a music producer, Monika Kruse can look back at a long line of success. Since the end of the nineties Monika has created unforgettable hymns of the night, with techno classics like 'Needlehopper', ‘Latin Lovers’, ‘Morgana’(more than 1,2 million plays on YouTube) and through her Project GTMK – which she is doing together with Gregor Tresher. With her fourth album, ‘Traces’ Monika Kruse made her dream come true in relating her personal musical history in sixty-six minutes. ‘In Traces I put my quiet side into the foreground, more than in my former albums. For me it was very important to include other stylistic elements from deep house to broken beats, not just show the Monika who produces peak time tracks to rock the club’.

    But not to worry, Monika is not about easy listening music in 2013. Tracks like ‘Wavedancer’ and ‘Namaste’ will leave Monika`s stamp on every night, especially with the current remix by the exceptional artist Ramon Tapia. Consequently ‘Traces’ was voted as one of the top ten records of the year by the readers of ‘Groove Magazine’ and ‘Faze’.


    Another artistic pillar is Monika`s label Terminal M, which has been a fixed element in Germany`s musical scene and with over 100 releases, Terminal M can look back at 13 successful years so far. The profile of the label has developed further and a team of artists like Andhim, Pele & Shawnecy, Paul C & Martini, Piemont and Pig&Dan, work on a funky modern understanding of techno and house.

    Last, but by no means least, Monika started her own charity in 2000. ‘No Historical Backspin’ was set up in order to let artists and DJs declare themselves against racism, intolerance and hostility against foreigners.

    Since then more than 100 artists have all played for free at her charity events. All proceeds were donated to the Amadeu Antonio foundation that supports victims of right wing and racist violence. Monika Kruse as official spokesperson of ‘No Historical Backspin’ clearly proves wrong the impression that the club scene is an apolitical, hedonistic generation.
