Yeah above The Fulcrum Quattroe's. A fair bit lighter anyway.

Up your budget slightly and you'll get Kysrium Elites from 4thebike.de for €385 delivered! You won't regret it. The Zonda's would be my second choice.

I used google chrome and it translated the site perfectly for me! Just had a set delivered last Monday, ordered on the Wednesday night previous.

    http://www.swimcyclerun.com/wheelsroad/campagnolo-zonda-clincher-wheelset-with-shimano-hub.html

€348 here delivered from an Irish company for the zonda. By all accounts a excellent wheel though I'm tempted to spend the bit extra on the kyrsium elite s as they're a bit lighter and I prefer the look of them.

Need new wheels myself as I've gone 11 speed was originally looking at around this budget but that is creeping up. Considering going hand built for a bit more and the farsport carbon clinchers are tempting as well though I'm put of by the crapper braking. I can't stop looking at Mavic carbone SLE and Mavic Ksyrium SLR lot more money but really seem to be best of both looks of full carbon and even better braking than normal aluminium rim's.

Have them on about two weeks. The askiums fell apart and I wasn't bothered spending more money getting it fixed so put them on. Will be getting another rear wheel at some stage to replace the askium

Having just got a cracked rim on my mavics and had a browse for spares (good luck with that), and authorised repairers (not great if you live in Ireland), I would go with the Fulcrums/ Campags. The quattros are lovely

When comparing prices, watch out for the freehub. The campag one is usually cheaper.

Hand-built Mavic CPX22 on Ambrosio hubs would be ideal and should come in at your budget of €350.

Yea was aware of that should be the other way round when they use a cheaper heavier steel freehub for shimano but they want campy to look the better option. Did you get the shimano freehub for that price? Was debating getting zonda's with the campy hub and running a 11 speed campy cassete as it would save the extra weight the shimano hub adds. Already have an 11 speed force cassete though.

    Wouldn't steel be more durable?

It would but add's 45g to the wheel not much I suppose and it's at the place where it matters least on the wheel. I'm building from scratch though and saving that 45g in several place's around the bike add's up. It won't be as light as Astramonti's but should be under 7kg close to 6.8 if I get light enough wheels.

Edit: And before any one add's lose weight of yourself first I only weigh 65kg and will probably be around 63 in the summer.

I thought the new 11 speed shimano freehub was now aluminum

That's possible hard to find tech specs on shimano versions of the fulcrum and campagnolo wheels. Wonder is it any lighter then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭mick121

Thanks for all the replys and info.looks like the fulcrums are out but I think the look cool.So its between the zondas and mavics ksyrium elite.Which would you get and why.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭kuro_man

zonda's: better reputation for reliability (I am not saying they are, but some do), a tad lighter, cup-and-cone bearings, supposed to be more suited to rough roads (no idea if that's true), less expensive, surprisingly aero (according to Tour)

mavics: sealed bearings, comes with tyres, supposed to be stiff

In summary, buy which one you prefer the look of!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

I'd vote the Zonda's. I've got them where I used to Have Mavic Ksyrium SL's (better than elite's) I prefer them than the Mavic's. Lighter, very stiff, strong and I also like that each set comes with the details of the person who built them and the list of checks they preformed before sending them out. Also they're Italian ;)

It appears zondas are the better choice over elites but not by much.anything more information or links to add that might help.thanks for all the help so far boardies some really great advice.

Didnt check zondas but was advised to get fulcrums over mavics after chat with Darragh from bee cycles. Any idea which fulcrums budget €350 but could stretch to €450.

Campagnolo Zondas are identical to Fulcrum Racing 3s.

They're not identical but similar. The 3's have a slightly different spoke design on the rear wheel.

I have had both Zondas and fulcrum 3s. While they had the same stated weight of 1,550, the Zondas come in 80 grams lower than that and the Fulcrums were a fair bit over their stated weight.

In fact I have had two sets of Zondas and both were lower than their stated weight which is very unusual for Campagnolo.

But Zondas wont take shimano cassette, correct?

They do. You have an option to select either a Shimano / SRAM or a Campagnolo compatible freehub.

This is the same with all Campagnolo and Fulcrum wheels - the actual Fulcrum and Campagnolo freehubs are the same parts.

Freehubs are also inexpensive to buy later if you need to change it.

So apart from weight and price the only other factor when chosing between these two is their look (and reaction of the crowd to mixing two brands together)?

I take the quality must be the same, are there any pros/cons in warranty, replacements etc.?

At this point Im leaning towards zondas - pricewise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭letape

Personally I can't see any reason to go for fulcrum 3s over Zondas. Warranty, build quality etc will be the same as they come from the same factory and are made using the same parts (rims, hubs, axles, bearings, freehubs and spokes).

I prefer the Zonda spoke configuration too.

As you say though, some may prefer to go with Fulcrum wheels if using Shimano or SRAM.

Go with whichever you like the look of. Zonda's if you've got Campagnolo, Fulcrum 3's if you've got Shimano/SRAM but that's just a case of matching wheels top groupset.

Are the Shimano Ultegra 6800 factory wheels any good comparing to zondas/fulcrums/mavics? €282 shipped on ribble with todays discount.

I think the Ultegra wheels are heavier. Shimano wheels are reliable but sometimes spare spokes are tricky to source if you snap one. Watch out for low spoke counts and bear in mind that when wheels have a rider weight limit that generally includes the bike too.

If you are tall you can easily get near the weight limit which doesn't mean that the wheels will explode but it does mean brake rub, unless you are arrow straight when you get out of the saddle to go up the steep stuff.

My Mavic Ksyriums are going in for repair and I bought Fulcrum Racing Quattros with 25mm gp 4000s tyres in the meantime. I really like them (looks, sound, smoothness, stiffness) so would vote for Campag/ Fulcrum.

If my Mavics cost too much to repair then I will buy Zondas to replace (and risk breaking the 'rules').

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭omri

Are quattros just higher profile ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

Quattros are higher profile than Racing 3s and so are heavier but are, in my mind, really good value. If you prefer lighter, go Racing 3/Zonda but they cost more.

Yeah I'm 6'4" and about 92kg. Will read up the weight specs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

I'm the same height and have got fed up with brake rub! I definitely need to work on climbing style.

The difference in weight between the ksyrium elites and racing quattros is about 200g. The racing quattros are about 230 euro and the elites 400, at best. I've had three years out of my elites and the rear rim is cracked and the front is out of true and I'm 83kg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

Just to say, that with discount the ultegra wheels look great value and the Mavics have coped well with some rough roads (descent of f the cut springs to mind)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭omri

Did brake rub happen on the mavics tho ? Or on your new fulcrums quattro? Weight diff between fulcrums r3 and quattros is about the same 200g - I don't think it will matter at all in my case anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

No brake rub on the quattros so far. I think over time and use the mavics got more flexible as they were fine at first. I'm similarly torn: if the mavics cost too much to repair, do I buy a new set so that the old set are spare parts; or do i ditch them and get fulcrum racing 3s for about the same price?
