Has anyone on here ever actually got a job from being on Linkedin?

As I glance at 3 invites here in my inbox to join this "social networking website for people in professional occupations" I again have to ask myself "why?!"

It looks like one big online circle jerk and somewhat pointless. Has anyone on here ever actually got a job from being on Linkedin?

Not myself personally but Ive heard of people who have. Its more for the IT or electronics areas though.

EDIT: I find it handy for going into more detail or projects or programming languages I have worked with. I havent graduated yet so nobody would be actively looking for someone with my skills yet.

Is that not a bit like "has anyone ever got the ride from online dating sites?".

I get on average 2/3 offers of an interview for contracting roles a fortnight I'd say at this rate. Depends on the work you do obviously and the market. But yes would be my answer.

Yup, got my last job from connecting with a recruiter through LinkedIn.

It is an awful site tho, and is one big circle jerk. I keep getting endorsed by people I once vaguely knew for skills I don't even have and that they should have no reason to believe I have.

If you know the recruiters that deal with your professional area then you can completely avoid it and just contact them directly or through sites like jobs.ie.

My company hire through it all the time, I get phone calls and emails sometimes from it too. So yes, in London it's very much a way to hire, not sure about back in the old country though.

    no it's a vanity exercise
I regret signing up and now I only log in to accept connections from people I may need a job/reference off in the future..

Yes - moving to it in the next few weeks and had countless emails prior to this one of people asking was I interested in a particular role as they had seen my profile on LinkedIn etc etc.

No, I'm only in my first permanent job, but I get recruiters adding me all the time. I am in IT though, and they're all over LinkedIn in this industry.

Got my current role from LinkedIn as it was only advertised there.

Prior to moving into a different area I was receiving interview/job offers weekly. These were usually abroad (as previous industry has little presence in Ireland) and mostly contracting though.

    Not in an IT/Technical area.

Got contacted about a job on there by a recruitment agency but I'm changing careers so I didn't bother with the interview

I'm not on linkedin and abhor the idea of it but I may start looking around at jobs this year.

Hmm, its all the rage you say? A quandry for sure

    Yep,

Contacted directly by a company and made the big switch. I ignore all the agencies / CV harvesters tho. In IT so huge demand for staff in my area which obviously helped.

    Go team!

Yes, I was offered a pretty good job after being found on LinkedIn, had to turn it down though as it was a little bit too far to travel.

Pretty strong word there. Any reason why?

Seems pretty good for job hunting from what I gather, or at least in software roles. Rare enough not to get messages from recruiters on a somewhat frequent basis (I'm not looking) and I know a few people who got positions from it.

Linkedin is like facebook, except profile pictures are usually sober and respectable and all funny cat pictures and articles are replaced by americanised inspirational quotes.

Haven't gotten a job offer through it. But then again, my level of experience in IT isn't in great demand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭RoboRat

yes, got my current position from Linkedin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

I've had potential recruiters check out my profile on LinkedIn. But I don't really "use" it as such. I have it there but it's not something I actively engage in. I work in science so I suppose that wouldn't be one of the top sectors for the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Yep, have gotten my last two jobs from it. As with Facebook the problems it's now suffering from have been the influx of recruiters and people with a poor brain to mouth filter...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,347 ✭✭✭LynnGrace

Not personally, but I know a couple of people who did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭pablohoney87

I have had 2 offers from it without even attending an interview. Then again I am a recruiter and your competitors will always keep close watch on you.

Yep got my last job through it.

Since I've moved home every second day someone contacts me to see if I would like a position back in London. Was offered a job interview in Cork on it recently.

No, not even once, and I have just short of 1000 connections, mostly company owners and e.o level. Seems like a bit of a circle jerk tbh. And what we do is pretty fundamental to most companies, not some niche specialism. I keep waiting for the work to flow in via linkedin..then I think of how many jobs I've given out through Linkedin and that's....errr..zero.....q.e.d

From what I can gather, if you upgrade, you can then see who's been viewing your profile?

    Thats a bit much tbh

Not upgrading adds to the mystery - better value for money, you get to hunt down the name of "Linkedin user in the plastic widget trade". It's like Cluedo - "was it Gerry in Bambering Plastics, with the iPhone, on the jax?"

I only just received an e-mail inviting me for an interview, based on my Linkedin profile. It wasn't one of those generic recruitment agency e-mails, it seemed quite genuine and referred to specific skills and experience detailed on my profile. And the job description is pretty much exactly what I'd be interested in, if I were looking for work at the moment. However I'm very happy in my current employment, so I'm not interested.

What's not mentioned in my Linkedin profile is that I'm currently on maternity leave ... not so sure that they'd be so interested in interviewing me if they knew that! :o

I joined a while back and it seems that my account has invited every person I've ever sent an email to in my life to connect with me. I don't like that. It also seems to list every other job title under the sun except what I recently qualified in and it limits me to one job title too which I don't like either since I have experience in a couple of areas.

yeah, I'm always very weary of stuff like this. It pisses the fúck off out of me. If I sign up to a site, it's me doing that for myself. Not so you can go and leech everyone I know.

Another thing I hate about it, is how several sites seem to look to get you to combine your friends together by associating all your profiles. So logging into Linked in, Via Twitter, with your Facebook, posting to yer whatever is next.

Can't stand that carry on at all.

Why did you give it access to your address book?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

I only registered earlier this year. A HR manager from a company in my sector contacted me about a vacancy and said I was the type of person they were looking for. She referred to specific experience in my previous roles that I had detailed on my profile. The location didn't suit so I politely declined the offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,778 ✭✭✭✭fits

Yes. But don't like the website. It fooled me into giving my address book as that page pops up and looks same as login screen.

I've been on the free one for years as I am looking for Admin. Assistant job in the US. I've had a few enquiries but once they realise I am not stateside I don't hear from them again. I am not a college grad.

Got an email from a recruiter once when I lived in Canada stating that my skills were a perfect match for an upcoming engineering role in an IT firm. Which is funny coz I'm a TV producer with absolutely zilch clue about IT and can barely tell the difference between hardware and software.

Other than that, it just seems handy to have a nosy about the Who's Who in particular companies of interest or who's got a new job. Most people I find checking out my profile are fellow producers, people I used to date or new girlfriends of exes.

Guess it depends on the industry

    Exactly.

Why (oh why!) would people put up all that private information for the whole world to see?
