My banker Le Coudray getting pipped by Anzum in the '99 Stayers (World Hurdle). I keep watching reruns of it and still think he going to hold on and at the back of the last it goes through my head "will paddy power still pay me out after this length of time? He has to win it!"

    Been a few:

Refinement getting done by Whiteoak in first Mares Hurdle

Hurrican Fly getting beat in 2012 after a horrible ride by Ruby, what annoyed me most was he wouldn't admit it til Punchestown 2013

Hors La Loi refusing to race in 2003 after that tit Liam Cooper had delayed the start acting the clown on Intersky Falcon

    Oscar Delta last year

Yes I backed them all :( Waiting for someone to say they backed Native Dara in Coral Cup now or Merchant's Friend when he got beat by Maximise!

Best Mate the year of foot and mouth, was heavily on him at all prices down to odds on before the Festival was called off

How about Istabraq in 2002, it was more about the end of his career than the loss of money, that was heart money, he was my favourite NH horse. You know one of those horses that you become attached to when you first start your interest in racing, he was one of those.Thats why I cant get attched to the 'Fly like him.

The year they cancelled Day 3 due to high winds. Being left like a lost sheep in the Cotswolds. Nothing to do but sightseeing or head to the pub. Pub it was. Waking up Gold Cup day with one of my worst hangovers ever, scraping myself out of bed to get to the track. I was not right for about 5 days.

    Non monetary:

1999 - RSA Chase Nick Dundee falling when looking like destroying a future Gold Cup winner

    Monetary:

The Wednesday last year. Tofino Bay trades at 1.01 before idling and getting caught by Back In Focus. Then later on an ante post bet I'd written off (Boston Bob in the RSA Chase) looks like being landed before he crumples at the last

Yes, Nick Dundee too, that was a crushing fall, he was the Irish banker after Istabraq

For Non Stop falling at the last in the Coral Cup in 2011 cost me a 4 figure some in the last leg of the placepot that day... Hurts to even think about it.

baby run falling in the foxhunters had him for a placepot I think about 7 lines paid over 4000 after I no it wouldn't have if he was placed but tasty none the less it was really made sour when all my friends drinking in pub had zemsky backed and cheered him home heart breaking:mad:

Exact same scenario cost me. Had the 1,2 in leg 6 of the placepot aswell. Was gutted.

Zemsky was my biggest win. Was on a stag, whole pub cheering when baby run was a fence clear I think. He fell, whole pub went quiet except for me and one other lad roaring on Derek O Connor.

Worst case in recent years was Jessies Dream in the RSA being worried out by Boston's Angel

Worst case of "counting chickens" was Harchibald in the CH

A few years ago my first time backing at Cheltenham where i really didn't know much about racing at all. A friend told me about three horses he fancied and at the time i had no idea about cross doubles and trebles. So i done a fiver treble First Lieutenant won and the second horse who i can't remember won and i was waiting on what everyone said was the best handicapped horse in England and Ireland which was Call the Police. He opened 10's i think hammered into 5's or 4's and never got into the race. Would have been over 3000 for a fiver which would have helped my funds for Vegas.

Lumped on Hurricane Fly in 2012... my last big lump... oh god it hurt so bad, I remember watching Rock on Ruby cross the line and every ounce of blood draining from my face.

Last time I'll lump on an odds-on fav in Cheltenham, Regardless of the horse.
Lesson learned - FWIW I think he'll win next Tuesday!

Think JT's injuries in last year's festival would be my worst moment, seeing a young man's life being pretty much ruined along with his families just for our enjoyment. It just ruined the festival last year for me the whole mood changed and it really felt like it shouldn't have went on at times with the interviews etc afterwards . Let's hope nothing serious like this happens this year or in fact again

Couldnt agree more, really gave perspective on the whole thing. Money lost/won after seemed irrelevent at times when you heard the jockeys talk about their pal

I still remember lads in the bookies (and not just the usual slime you find in there) giving out about a delayed race, even after it was clear it was a serious injury. Horrible

worst thing i hate bout cheltenham - the once a year punters in the bookies! and prob winning more than ya!

What is the ideal setup for everbody during Cheltenham. How does the day start, who do you want with you and who not, where would be the ideal day be? I know off topic

Ten Plus being killed in the Gold Cup. Sizing Europe going wrong coming down the hill en route to what would've been a sure win the Champion Hurdle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Azertyuiop leaving his legs in the water jump and ruining his chance in the 2004 Champion Chase.

Never got to see him and Moscow go toe to toe up the hill.

Another one was Gloria Vuctius at 66/1 for the GC, may not have won but was running a great race to till he fell and lost his life

Watching Edredon Bleu fly round in his pomp was great viewing. Loved his attitude as a racehorse

I remember Powers went 6/4 on Moscow, Azerty and Well Chief to finish 1-2-3 in any order in that race. Couldn't see it not coming up so had a nice few quid on it. Then Azertyuiop went and left his legs in the water, spent most of the race just watching him trying to make up the ground, thankfully he did finish 3rd but what looked a dead cert became a sweaty bum bet

McCoy said that he loved that horse and it hurt him bad, he was a novice i think? Won the racing post chase that year, was some prospect

Imo Azertyuiop was better round Cheltenham, Moscow was better round Sandown.

Not sure, Moscow was old and grey before he lost any race he stayed up in, and looked more or less unpassable up the hill..

All the same that tingle creek was one of the best NH races ive ever seen..

Ive had a lot of debates with people on this but they raced twice where neither had a blemish/fell and Moscow won both convincingly. Granted both occasions were at Sandown but i see nothing in either race that tells me Azertyuiop would have actually beaten Moscow at Cheltenham or anywhere else. Imo of course.

And of course obviously my worst Cheltenham moment was seen Moscow fall in 04.

Harchibald being beat in the champion hurdle, Carberry leaving it too late with Psycho, Iktitaf falling when I think he would have won a champion hurdle...

Psycho hurt me bad - had him in all sorts of ante post doubles and trebles - did me out of about 8k - talk about gutted

the worst is chasing your money back on the sat at Uttoxeter. or even worse if your in profit at cheltenham then lose is it at uttoxeter cos ya think this is an easy game.

Moscow was a better animal than Azertyioup. Azertyiuops jumping made him a classy chaser. Moscow was just a classy animal all round. I think Azertyiuop wouldn't have even finished second that year the way things were panning out. However, it was good to soft then and he was a real good ground horse, jumping accurately when going full speed on good ground into fences. The year previous when it was genuine good, that was the year I think we'd have seen a titanic battle up the hill had Moscow stayed upright.

Worst i can think of lately, is when i tipped up Son of Flicka here the night before at 33/1 and then because i was there and wanted to back on course decided not to back it as it was down to 14/1 (Value gone i thought).. Glum faces all round

-Denman beating KS in his first Gold cup.
-Franchoek in the Triumph the same day getting chinned by Celestial Halo.
-Punchestowns getting chinned by Big Bucks for BB's first WH.
-Hardy Eustace being done for a place by Afsoun.

Golden Cross beaten by MY Way De Solzein, definitely the JT situation last year, Cotton Mill 2012,

On a slightly lighter side, waking up on Tuesday morning last year to an inspection.... not good

Maljimar 2009 getting chinned by Wichita Lineman.

I had a €10 ew double with Go Native that day 14/1 and 20/1 respectively. Was thinking of my holiday in the sun as he cruised into the lead and then McCoy snatched it from my grasp. That one really hurt

Daryl Jacob, weak as piss! Watch him the following year on Maljimar in the X-Country, couldn't even get him placed despite looking the winner jumping the last. That cost me the PP on the day.

Mate of mine had a right few quid on Maljimar the day WL beat him, win only. Needless to say when either the horse Maljimar, or jockey Jacob are ever mentioned one or both of us will retort with 'Cúnt' :pac:
