anyone watch this last night, I thought it had potential and will watch it when it airs properly to see how they flesh it out
Shame we didn't get to see Billy Piper's character, anyone recognise any of the locations?

Watched it last night. Good but not great. Will watch ep 2 though as I reckon once the characters have been fleshed out it will be more enjoyable.

A grand little waste of time. Dalton and Green deserve awards for mostly keeping a straight face.

‘Penny Dreadful’ Preview: A Divine Gift, and a Dreadful Curse (Exclusive Video)
    The pains of being different

“To be different: Is that not a divine gift?” asks one of the lead characters in the latest trailer for Showtime's “Penny Dreadful.”

“Is that not a dreadful curse?” replies another.

The characters in the Showtime Victorian monster drama are Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney), a libertine who seemingly doesn't age, and Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who is looking for her own way to cheat death. They join an assembly of characters, both new and plucked from Victorian, who occupy 1891 London.

The trailer plays up the romantic elements of the show, including Grey and Ives’ first meeting

Without giving much away/hopefully avoiding spoilers.

    Ep2

    The plot thickens.

Billie Piper's character gets introduced but shows little depth, yet, and various characters start interwinning incl Dorian Gray. Vanessa Ives is interesting in the séance pointing to something not right afoot with Sir Malcolm. Frankenstein's baby starts to grow up and show signs of remembering his past life, but the end scene is quite a wtf.

Really enjoying this so far. Acting, production and direction are all top notch. Interested to see if it maintains its quality with the director change for episodes 3 and 4.

Just watched the first one now, liked it, loved the buildup in the final scene, didn't see the reveal coming at all.

Have the first couple of episodes recorded. Someone please tell me that Billie Piper doesn't do an Orish accent.

Oh Lord, I like the idea behind the series but if her accent is as bad as I fear I won't be watching. It doesn't help that I'm not a fan of her at the best of times.

Is this going to be a Superheroes mix-match?.....

Just watched it there, Vanessa's spiel to "Bill Cody" (can't remember his name) was almost delivered exactly the same as she did to James Bond on the train in Casino Royale.....

Bad script or just the same delivery, meh, will give it another go....

I saw "Mrs Bishop" though and it looked a little like the Ripper Street set at times...

    Just watched Episode 1&2.

Interesting but plenty of WTF moments. Will keep tabs to see how it develops. Normally not overly interested in horror stuff...so might not stick with it.

The intertwining of various characters and mythical legends gives it a good premise.

'Penny Dreadful': Timothy Dalton On The Odd Moment While Filming The Seance with VIDEO
Finding Mina seems to be the central driving force of the show, but when Access asked how complex Sir Malcolm’s storyline is beyond his missing daughter, Dalton hinted that the world of “Penny Dreadful” will continue to grow and expand.

“The spine of this first series is that quest, but it’s not quite as straightforward as it might seem,” Dalton said. “I mean, you’ve already had a clue because you know he’s searching for her in a — in what Vanessa calls a demimonde, and what I call the space between living and death — the undead

Sir Malcolm and Vanessa’s relationship is still very mysterious ; she too is on a quest of her own, and it’s only at this moment in time that both these stories have meshed, because we both need to get my daughter Mina.”

I enjoyed episodes 1 and 2. I believe the new one is airing as I type. Looks like it could be good though it's a little early to cast judgment. It certainly looks great!

I really enjoyed the third episode. I'm reading Dracula at the moment so it's interesting to see which character are stand ins for the book characters and how it will all fit together.

Watched the first episode and have the second episode recorded - definitely has potential.

Think they were filming in Marlay Park last summer. The fair ground show in the first episode was filmed behind the main house, I think. I recall the formal gardens there were closed for a few days also, but I've only seen the first episode. Will be interesting to see what shows up.

They were filming all over the city. The area around Dame Lane was used for a few days. They shot interiors in the Stags Head for a half day. Look closely at the area around there and you'll still see some remnants from the shoot - ie. "Guns and Jewellery Traded Here" on the window of Sams barbers and an antique letterbox inside the Stags.

Some scenes were shot in Henrietta Street (used in Ripper Street as well). The interior of the 'Explorers' Club' is the dining hall in the King's Inns.

Beautifully shot and a half interesting idea. Awful script though, and seems to be trying to do way too much as a story.

Its just Buffy with corsets in. Its not meant to make any sense. The Penny Dreadfuls that it gets its name from were a crude mix of tabloid porn and bloodshed anyway. Watching Timothy Dalton counting his money makes it worth it. That and Billie Piper getting her kit off in episode three.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Playboy

Don't understand some of the awful script comments, the writing is a cut above 90% of the stuff out there. Granted its not at the Soprano's, Breaking Bad level but given that its a fantasy/horror type show I think the script is quite good as is the acting.

Have really enjoyed the first 3 episodes. There seems to be a new director for every 2 episodes and the 3rd episode was directed by an Irish lady while the first two were directed by the guy who did 'the Impossible'. Episode two was the best so far, really enjoyed the dark seance scene and the Museum Curator character.

Have high hopes for the rest of the series.

So much money was clearly thrown at the show you'd think they could have made more of an effort with the script. It's lazily written and makes no attempt to do anything with the characters other than present cardboard cut outs. Why not try to do it better?

Anyway, I can see we'll have to agree to disagree!

Just watched episode 2 earlier tonight. So far the scenes that have engaged me the most are the ones which featured the Doctor and Proteus. I completely bought the drama and awe of the Doctor's discovery when Proteus came to life, and their subsequent relationship. Plus the background music for their scenes is appropriately poignant.
The end of episode 2 with the killing of Proteus left me a bit devastated

Eva Green's acting during the seance was quite impressive but all in all I found this episode a bit lacking compared to episode 1. I understand though that in these earlier episodes there will be a fair amount of character building, hopefully this pays off with some great storytelling somewhere down the line.

Billie Piper's character and acting didn't actually leave me feeling abhorred, that was nice.

The Egypt expert guy (the lad with the same hair as Will Ferrell's Zoolander character) is putting Aidan Gillen in Game Of Thrones to shame with the amount of accents he's firing through, it does kind of take you out of the story.

Still though, looking forward to episode 3.

If this was a by the number period procedural with a lone protagonist I'd agree with you but it's not its an ensemble piece , there will be time for deeper character studies when the world and it's characters have been set up.

Don't see this making it to a second season, its great to look at, but absolutely dead on the inside.

Exactly, so do a proper ensemble piece! It doesn't necessarily need deeper character studies, but it does need a script. The second ep was hilarious, I'm out.

never mind a script, it needs a bloody story.

and van helsing has shown up! we just need the creature from the black lagoon to put a shift in now to complete the sticker collection

I'd have thought it was pretty obvious that the search for Malcoms(Daltons) daughter Mina was the main through line of the season . You can question how well its parcelling it out but to claim it has none suggests you haven't really been paying much attention.

Yep, the baddie has his daughter and they are looking for her in a vague-not actually-doing-much-looking way..to paraphrase Paulie Walnuts: I suppose you could call that a plot

It would need to develop some to be a story. Frankensteins arc has actually gotten further than the main plotline and its four episodes in now

Then as of the last episode, Dalton's' character is now planning to head of to Egypt on an expedition instead of concentrating on finding this bloody daughter

The show has potential but it's all a bit scattered right now. The acting, for one, has its good and bad. Dalton and Green are the standouts. Hartnett and Treadaway (Victor) are solid if not anything out of the ordinary, but Piper, Kinnear (monster) and Carney (Dorian) are poor. Painful at times even.

The plot is still finding its way but it could and should be tighter. Dorian Gray, for example, I feel is a character that could be cut and you'd have a much more focused and leaner story. I can't see what the character adds to the story bar serving as a distraction for other characters.

It could all come together nicely and I don't mind the monster squad style line up as all play into a compelling story. It's the show has been renewed and that should help refocus the story they want to tell.

All in all a very watchable show that has the potential to be much more. I'm a fan of the whole Gothic stories so I really wish this show reaches where it can and should go.

Just looked at episode 1 last night and have to say I found it boring to watch, it was actually 'pretty dreadful' in parts I thought. I did not find any of the characters particulary interesting and the story was not very engaging, or maybe I am just not seeing what other people are but for me there was nothing encouraging me to continue watching further episodes in this series.

    So after watching episodes 3/4

Is it going along the lines that Ethan ( Hartnetts character)
    Could be a were-wolf.
Can't go home after a violent crime
Waking up by the river with nailmarks in his palm
He had something going with the wolves in the zoo
Not wanting to give some of his blood ( didn't he say it wouldn't be a good idea

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭Soft Falling Rain

Seems that way, his "understanding" with the wolves also seemed a bit heavy handed in suggesting his true nature.

I think that's a fair analysis. The show, a bit like Games of Thrones feels simultaniously rushed and bloated, because both have a large cast of characters and storylines competing for screen time and as a result you spend too little time developing each storyline and end up only with unsatisfying canapes of plot and character development.
I think the show would have benefited from one less character, and they could have saved Dorian Gray for season two or three.

Found the first episode a struggle to get through too but really enjoyed the next two so maybe give episode two a lash and if it still doesn't do anything for you its just not for you.

OK, I might check out episode two and see how it goes.
