Foods causing chronic cough?..

I have had a cough for about a year, Ive had a chest xray which is clear and doc is also sending me for pft but I think its down to something Im eating. Ive noticed after eating certain things the cough will flare up more, for example last night had pancakes after dinner and cough was reaaly bad, during the night and this morning my throat is so irritated coughing lots. Ive also noticed it getting worse at times eating toast and the like. So could it be yeast, gluten, wheat intolerance causing this? Chocolate is also a terrible trigger, its like it sticks in my throat. I love chocolate so is killing me to have to avoid it. Is there somewhere I can go that specialises in food intolerances? My doc prescribed me an inhaler which helps but thats not fixing the problem, I want to stop it happening in the first place. Its going on so long now, Im just sick of it. Hope someone can give advice. Thanks

Would it be dairy? Isn't dairy linked to things like that, coughs, blocked sinuses, respiratory type things? So if pancakes, toast and chocolate cause it, pancakes have milk, toast has butter (yeah?), chocolate has milk.

Did you ask the doctor about a food maybe causing it? Have you tried cutting out any of the suspects from your diet? That would be the first obvious step.

I had the same problem and was diagnosed with non-acidic reflux. Could you ask your GP about "silent reflux"? I had no idea I have reflux as I never have any heartburn, only coughing and sore throat. I am on medication for it and have to watch what I eat, feeling 90% better thankfully. If I stray from my safe foods I will get the symptoms you describe. First step would be a referral to see a gastroenterologist.

Oh and the food triggers for reflux (if that's causing your problems) may be completely different depending on the person, so you should keep a food diary. PM me if you like, I can tell you what has helped me a lot.

Thanks Space Dog, thats interesting about the reflux, when you have an episode of coughing/irritation do you have alot if saliva? Sorry tmi but I find when im coughing alot Im producing alot of saliva but its not mucousy or anything just alot of it.

Seosamh I'm not sure it is dairy as I can eat cheese and yogurts and it doesnt appear to cause problems in the same way as bready type foods. I guess keeping a food diary will help identify which is triggering it.

    Thanks again for the replies.

Could it be an increased amount of clear drip from the sinus passages?

Post nasal drip can cause a coughing and irritation of the throat. Have you seen an ENT?

No havent seen ent, I have had sinus problems in the past so I guess it could be that now that I think of it, I used to use nose sprays and anthihisthamines especially in summer as suffer from hayfever. I just had a baby so the majority of the last year I couldnt take any medications while pregnant, I did acupuncture to relieve the sinus congestion during the summer as pollen was wrecking havoc and I remember raising the issue of the cough with her, she tried to treat it but it didnt work. I suppose with so much time off medication, perhaps a build up occured and allowed this cough to develop?..

I suffer with my sinuses (ive had polyps and I have chronic sinusitis which is controlled with daily spray) and prior to having the sinuses under control I used to wake up coughing or go into coughing fits that actually became asthmatic in nature - I didnt have asthma as a child but seem to have developed it alongside the sinus problems.

Once I got the sinuses under control the asthma has largely resolved and I only use an inhaler for occasional triggers like exercising in cold air or dust.

Just something to consider. I used to get dreadful coughing fits, they would go on for ages. And there would be a lot of swallowing and trying to clear my throat - which would be impossible because it was actually inflamed so you couldnt swallow it away!
