Google and Network Passwords

No idea what section to put this is but here goes.

I recently bought a nexus 7 tablet which I set up and it works wonderfully. However, when I came home for the weekend it was automatically able to connect to the WiFi network even though its password protected. I checked with another device to make sure this was still the case and the password was still required to connect so I'm wondering how this could happen and the only explanation I could think of is that since my Google account would be synced with that which I access on my laptop, can it remember network passwords?

Any explanation for this would be appreciated.

Correct. When it backs up your stuff, it also backs up network settings - including wifi passwords.
