The parents of a 16-year-old schoolboy seduced by his married teacher have hit out after she was spared jail.

Married mum-of-three Bernadette Smith, 35, will be supervised for two years under a community payback order for her “sexual activity” with Gary Ralston.

She looked surprised not to be going to prison and grinned as she left court.

Gary’s mum Carol Morgan told the Daily Record: “No wonder she was smiling.

"If that had been a male teacher abusing a female pupil, he’d have got the jail.

“She got off so lightly because she looks like a Paris model – with the boobs and the nice hairdo.”

Gary’s dad Richard, who has custody of him, said: “It’s not right. She’s a sex offender, pure and simple.”

Smith, of Denny, Stirlingshire, groomed stunned Gary in her classroom at Bannockburn High School, then kissed him in a park and spent the night with him in his bed in jeans and a bra after the affair was discovered.

Gary told the Record: “I knew it was wrong. I wish none of this had ever happened.”

Smith told police she was in love with Gary.

It got me thinking back to 6th year in my school where rumours of one teacher in particular sleeping with Leaving Cert students (when they were in their last couple of months) were rife. Mind you, if she was she managed to keep under her bosses radar so Id imagine it was just school folklore.

One that Im fairly sure happened however was a good friend not prone to spoofing who was "staying after class" shall we say with a lecturer in the college we attended. I would imagine its much more common in Third Level education.

Hmm... this thread has got me thinking...

There was a certain module we had in third year - the material was rather dull and the class wasn't until about 4 or 5, but the classes were always fully attended as it was taught by a gorgeous Finnish postgrad.
I remember she said when handing back my project on the Argentinian financial crisis that it was very funny and wrote "Thanks for the laughs" inside it. And there was some sarcastic allusion, in the essay, to being dissatisfied or confused with the degree or something... and she asked me if I wanted to stay behind after class and talk to her about it, but I of course declined, and she said that if I needed to talk to someone to let her know...

Presumably she was just being nice, but... now my mind is wondering(sic.)...

OP question, yeah, a girl in the year ahead of me (6th) was doing a line with a HDip PE teacher in the school down the road - even shacked up with him for a while. Boys and girls aren't the same and not all 16 year olds are the same. Laws can't be made black and white.

She should of course be sacked, but unless the boy was harmed it shouldn't be a criminal matter.

My friend slept with one of our lecturers at the end of first year. It's a campus university in the UK and some of the younger lecturers socialise in the student union.

Anyway, this guy happened to be late 30s and he spent a few months cracking onto her whenever she'd bump into him on a night out. I was there plenty of times when he'd be throwing the moves on her, and often some of the Erasmus hotties. My friend hooked up with him a few times at the end of the year, had some fun and wasn't particularly interested in him beyond the drunken hook-ups. Summer came.

We started back in second year and during one of the first few weeks back we found out he'd married his long-term partner over the summer. None of us had any idea he was engaged at all. My friend became very depressed over it, mainly due to a lot of people finding out and thinking she'd known all along that he had a partner.

It's not boy/girl or 16/17 years old; it's a power ratio - teacher/pupil, that's quite black and white.

A few lessons from an older woman might have have saved me a lot of embarrassment and fumbling in my later teens.
I feel there is a lot of PC overreaction to cases where the woman is the predator and I fail to see how it could damage the lad involved, unless there was violence or VD involved .
Anyway, it's so rare I can't see it ever undermining society the way males preying on young girls could.

But if you'd had a few lessons from an older teacher then you would just have transferred the embarrassment and fumbling onto a less experienced girl. I think we all have to go through the cringy bit in order to learn - it's only fair!

I worked as a study superviser in a school and I also was responsible for locking up the school at night.

I was out one night and bumped into one of the sixth year students. Being in college at the time I was still living with my parents, so I took her back to the school and we had sex on the teachers desk in one of her classrooms.

During my teacher training in dublin I got talking to a lad from west dublin who was in my course and he told me a story before about a young qualified female teacher in his placement school who went threes on a bastard with two 6th year students on their graduation night. I know one girl in my final year was sleeping with a teacher, because she told me herself. It was only because she liked me as a friend - yes, I know - and we happened to be walking the same way after the very last day, so we hung out at her house for the afternoon. She had just found out she was pregnant, and to this day I still wonder whether she introduced me to her parents that day, so that they'd think I was the father ... or maybe she just liked being able to tell a non-judgmental friend? I don't know, and I never heard anything else from her after that.

(This was not in Ireland, BTW.)

The outcome would be different though, if the genders were reversed, he'd be a sex offender and probably locked up? how is that not hugely different? people would be baying for his blood if the genders were reversed.

A friend of mine is a teacher. She's 31, and a serious cougar. There have been several incidents on nights out where she has scored fellas who don't even look 18. She teaches leaving cert kids who are around that age. I've often wondered if she'd go there with a pupil as she has said there are some boys in her classes that are 'gorgeous looking'. Last June I noticed on Facebook that she had several new friends. I asked her who they were and they were all pupils who had just finished 6th year. They were all male and 'cute'. Highly suspect IMO
