To all sport science/nutrition heads out there: I'm currently shopping around to find a healthy carbohydrate based supplement, being a female and presently training twice a day. I'm just finding it a bit hard to get the all required calories intake through my diet and have therefore been losing some weight, so looking for a supplement to "fill the gap".

The choice of products is incredibly vast and I assume some products/brands would be more recommendable than others. So I'd like your opinions about your preferred product based on your experiences, knowledge and, if you have some at hand, please include links to research articles (i.e comparing ways of increasing muscle recovery, glycogen repletion etc).

    Thanks in advance
    :)

If you need more calories look to get them from good fat sources. You body will thank you for it.

Hmm interesting. Any evidence supporting why? I know fats are theoretically the best energy supply (I think 9kcal/g compared to 4kcal for protein and carbs)

Yeah there's loads out there. Don't mean to be short or anything but it's best to research these things yourself and if you have the basics nailed down and have questions post them up.

Well the main purpose of my post is what product/brand would people recommend, as there is loads out there. I guess the cheap stuff might be considered as "junk"

why would you want a second rate fuel supply like fat? carbohydrate is king when it comes to fueling the body.

Have you checked your calories intake as it is for now? And what is your goal? That would define the source of energy I believe.

Bring more energy dense doesn't mean its a better energy source, in theory or otherwise.
Petrol has more energy than either.

Also, it's completely ridiculous for people to be arguing over whether you need more fat or carbs, when you haven't given your current diet. Either could be lacking.

FWIW, it's you want sugars around workouts, pick up some dextrose at the supermarket. Cheap and effective.
For starches, go with oats or waxy maize starch.
Those are the basic ingredients in most branded supplements, works out much cheaper to do it yourself.

You could just eat more. . . since you have to ingest the supplement anyway why not make it real foods. Cook with butter, eat some chocolate spread with your oats, put some cream into your coffee....easy calories there.
