Best Maternal AI Bull to use on my SHx cows?

    Well folks,

I have two cows, one Blue Grey and one SHx with maybe an LM, so half SH in both of them anyway.

They will be third calvers once I AI this time so I am not overly worried about calving difficulty.

I really want to push on from these two and produce my own replacements, what AI bull would you recommend that wont be a complete disaster if and when the come out bull calves?

    Thanks for reading and contributing.

I suppose any limousin Bull like TVR , FTY OR ADX.

    Simmental ZBF OR HKG

    Charolais,NPP

    Angus GJB

They are all popular choices and will be good animal no matter what gender

I would probably go with a maternal limousin. The simmental off the shorthorn will give a nice heifer but I don't know if the bull weanling will sell as well as the limo. I wouldn't keep a charolaois for breeding but plenty would.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,980 ✭✭✭Genghis Cant

I'd be thinking Lim. The right Charolais would bring a fair calf too.

Alex cf61 would bring a lovely roan and he is out of Jonconde supposed to be a great maternal cow with milk .. If u could get him

You should have plenty of maternal traits from the shorthorn so concentrate on improving the calf quality
Always ask what is the cow weak on and use a bull to rectify it.

ADX would be my pick from the limos

LRY or CBQ from the parthenaise

If she is bringing enough pelvic width to the party I'd even consider a blue

I'm guessing she has plenty of milk so I don't think I'd go for a sim this time

Just wondering what you think of EFZ and FTY, eg calving difficulty and type of calves?

EFZ is the job great calves but straws are almost gone. Easy-ish calved wouldn't use him on small heifers. FTY I haven't heard much about yet tbh

Disappointed to hear that about EFZ. I've a nice few calves off him and all calved unassisted.

bogman what other sires did you use

Autumn breeding season just finished - ZGH, EDJ, IS4, ADX and a lot of GJB

Calves born or due this spring - IRX, OZS, Adx, EdJ, VUL and AHZ

    Bogman,

Just wondering what's the opinion 'further afield' on GWO. Have 4 so far from differing cows and must admit that they're consistently impressive ( which is a rare claim) Have more due so hoping the trend continues!!
Don't know anyone locally using him so just interested in other views!
    Shame about EFZ!

I have 4 autumn calves from GWO as well. One of them is a heifer out of a shx cow (blue grey) so I can definitely recommend him on that type of cow. Really good calf that I'll keep as a replacement. They are all super calves with very good growth rates and muscle development and nice and quite as well. So far they are better calves than the charloais calves the same age.

Didn't know EFZ was gone. I've four cows in calf to him but nothing on the ground yet.

Haven't heard that much but what I have heard is very possitive. Good growth and muscle. Average calving.
One person said he was a better terminal bull than ADX. I'll wait and see on that one because I'm a big fan of ADX

Would ADX be fairly decent for maternal traits?? Hes breeding some serious stock so he is. Have you used TVR hes suppose to be impressive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭onyerbikepat

TVR is very hard calving @ 16.5.% (88% Rel).
Big fan of ADX here also.
How is GWO for calving? Are the calves big at birth?
Anything that comes out of the Castleview Limousin herd is good, if you ask me.

Don't know anything about GWO. My vet reckons calves off ADX can have unusually large shoulders sometimes which has caused some calving problems but very good calves off him. Would you agree?

Have you any cows off CWI, much milk off them?

Ya, ADX calves are very square. Nice and quiet too. If his heifers turn out to have milk, he'll be a great all rounder.
No CWI here but I used CVV in the past and happy with them.

Beware if believing the maternal numbers as reliability is low and as an angus breeder I would not use what the number recommend as biased towards rossiter and uk bulls

I used CVV on low size cows with tremendous results ...but he can bring too much leg if used on tall cows

I took a few pics of the GWO calves I have at the weekend.

Rabbit your blue grey cow might be like my one and the first pic here is a heifer from the blue grey cow in the background. The second pic is the four of them eating nuts. The two on the right are twins. All born in September.

Bit of a mix really. I've a lot of replacement heifers this year so I used some easy calving AA and SH bulls. For terminal sires I used CH and hoping for replacements I used LM.

CH I've used CF60 and LGL.
LM I used GWO, ADX and EFZ.
AA I used GJB, and for 24 month old heifers JGY and SYT
and I used the shorthorn SBU on 5 charloais heifers in the hope of some heifer calves. That cross should add some milk to the CH's size.

I forgot to add I had two from BZB the Parthanaise bull. Don't think I'll use him again though because the calves aren't as good as I was hoping.

CF60 is harder but I had great calves off him last year. Suits tall cows only though.

I didn't think lgl was hard calved, I hope to use his half brother this year the cxy son in dovea, looks a serious bull a lot fancier than lgl

If you want to use a new up and coming bull, try GINO - OGN.

He is a really maternal LM, from France, cow was 12/13 when he was born, farmer has 50 cows, no sheds, Gino was heaviest weanling in the herd come weaning.

He is by Casimir, one of the best bulls of his generation in France and his dam has had 4 of her bulls sold at the Prestige sales in France.

    Hi "on the river"

I am working off farm at the moment, the brother & father are at home.

I have a few AAxBrFr Heifers, they are calving down to a LM stock bull at the moment, I managed to get my hands on the last few SBU straws out of Progressive, so that is what they will be going back in calf to, and I am hoping for heifers, which will be kept on for breeding, Blue Greys all the way.

They'll be put to LM, CH & BB, then depending on the options.

In West Wicklow, aiming to have low-cost, small, hardy, milky cows, because that is what we think will work best, where we are.

From a dairy & sheep background so this suckler thing, is a bit of a new venture.
