Usually said to be 1-2lbs of fat, you could be losing water weight too though, especially when starting out.

If you are very overweight/overfat you could safely lose more fat too, as 1-2lb could be a very small percentage of overall fat levels. If very overweight you will usually lose more retained water too. On those major weight loss documentaries and programs you will see morbidly people dropping a lot more than 2lb per week under doctors supervision.

Can't find the exact reference but it is from Lyle McDonald.
He proposes that an individual can have a daily calorie deficit of 31 calories per % of body fat.
So, 20% bodyfat = 620 calories deficit a day, which is 4340 calories per week (1.24 lbs of fat, assuming all you lost was fat which doesn't really happen).

An average woman could be about 26% bodyfat and overweight over 34% so the actual deficits for you could be a lot higher meaning you could lose more than the above.

Are you sure about that? this would mean a 24stone man at 20% BF is on the same deficit as a 12 stone woman at 20% BF.

It would make more sense it if was a deficit of X calories per lb of bodyfat, I say "more sense" as I still think it could be better. e.g. a 24stone man at 20% BF has the same fat as a 12stone woman at 40%, but I would think the woman could probably safely have higher drop in energy intake.

Yes. My apologies. You are absolutely correct. It's 31 cals peer pound of fat. More info here http://forums.lylemcdonald.com/showthread.php?t=11223. See post 3.

Whatever decreasing their calories to 15% under maintenance results in. It is difference for everyone but 1-2 pounds would be the goal. Dropping 7 pounds in one week like you see on operation transformation isn't a good thing really for the majority of people.

    I like that one.

If you are severely overweight then the downsides of fast fat loss might be less of a concern than the immediate danger of being massively overweight.
