Is it about time Cork holds an independence referendum?

What with all the hoohah over the Scottish independence debate is it about time Cork does the same and holds a referendum for secession? In the lead-up to the referendum there'll be a chance for lively debate where Corkonians can make claims about better managing the prosperity of this new little country using proceeds from the Kinsale gas field. And heated arguments about whether the state should allow it's much bigger neighbour rump-Ireland (rIreland) to continue stationing its navel base there. Historically, Cork has rarely got the Government it voted for and independence can rid the country of FF rule for ever. In the blueprint for independence a local politician can come out and say that the constitution will recognise Michael Collins as the country's eternal president based on the North Korean model that has worked so well for that fellow red state.

    Is this a real question?

Little early to be drinking isn't it ?

Although seeing as how it's about Cork, probably not.

Can the rest of the country vote in this too? I vote yes. please piss off cork. Somewhere around the continental shelf would be ideal. :)

It should be the rest of Ireland voting on whether to get shot of them to be honest.

Can someone in Cork, who is of Cork please explain to the rest of us this smug feeling of entitlement and superiority that reeks from the City esp but presumably the county as well.

I just don't see what underpins it.

If harnessed, the collective hot air that emanates from the county would be a far more valuable energy source than Kinsale.

I would give it a month before they appear in their tattered rags at the walls of Dublin begging to be subsidised by the tax payers of the capital again

If it means I never have to see that desolate, depressing place and it's delusional inhabitants on the news again, I'm all for it!

They should declare independence and become a tax haven.

We should have a referendum preventing cork people from using the word "like" 3 times per sentence.

    1 is enough.

I can assure you that most people I know from Cork are mortified about the stereotype of the Irish by birth, Cork by the grace of God brigade.

OP are you taking the prc.com articles seriously again?

Are you resenting your home county more than usual this morning?

Its only a bit of fun, anyone mortified by that needs to refill the humour tanks.

Saying that, I 100% agree with seperation at long last.

    Corkonian NOT Irish !!!!

Let's think of it as containing them rather than granting independence.

I'm not from Cork, I merely live here. And this is my take on it.
It's not the county so much, it's mostly prevalent in the city - second city syndrome really. It's inherent in a minority, albeit a large one. Most Cork City folk are down to earth and nice as pie.

Please. Just build a big wall around them and let them get on with it.

Better still if you just built a wall around the northside of the city, excluding Montenotte, Tivoli and St Luke's.

The BIG bonus is that it has no bank HQs

Scotland may have oil but it also is home to most of the UKs basket case financial institutions.

The situation in Scotland could be substantially worse than here if the UK were to leave them with HBOS, RBS and TSB ... Technically they are all Scottish companies.

And where are you from? - a place without accents I suppose? :pac:

Okay, so what I'm getting from this thread so far is that, if Cork secedes, it will only happen because it is kicked out ...making it only the second country in modern history after Singapore to face such a fate. But will they be allowed to join the EU? And what about the Eurovision?

Well seeing that the field is practically empty and is only being used as a storage facility, fine ... fire away!

How would we enforce boarder protection with this new independent Cork? I propose we build a wall around this new free state.

Penal Laws. Enforce draconian penalties on anyone with a Cork accent found outside Cork if they can't produce the necessary papers.

Either that or make them sew something recognisable onto their jackets.

Stephen Ireland to get a bronze statue on Patrick St. The first of many Cork men to stand up to Irish imperialism and not wear green.
    Ironic name though.

Its a great little place - the city, the scenery of West Cork, the posh people in East Cork with their boats and us country folk up north just celebrating life .... you know what - its home and I wouldn't change anything about the place.

Ya but can he hold a candle up to Michael Collins? Historically Cork has voted in more FG TDs than the national average.

He is actually a Cobh man.Cobh being its own island and all that.It would be safe to say that there would never be a statue of him in Cork city.

All I know is i'm in the heartland of Cork FF here and it makes me violently sick sometimes and he doesn't even deserve to be in the same sentence as Michael Collins or FF's DeValera for that matter.

Well if you check the stats,we are a net contributor to the economy. We can pay for ourselves.Amongst other things,we have the most Pharmaceutical plants in the country and are well up there in the tech/IT sector. We are the breadbasket of the country producing the most food etc.I think around 15% of gas comes from Kinsale. We have the countrys only refinery. Now wait till we start drilling the oil.

    Go it alone??................easily.
