Graphics card upgrade???

I'm upgrading my graphics card and was going to go for an Asus GTX 760 until I seen an Asus GTX 660Ti and now I'm more inclined to go for the 660Ti.

FPS the 760 is slightly better, around 10% and has a higher GPU clock and memory interface.
The 660Ti however has a higher CUDA core (192 more), uses less power and runs cooler, plus it's €60 - €70 cheaper (not really fussed with the cost end of it)

Which do I go for, also would I be better going for a R9 270, I've never had a Radeon card before so I've no clue about them

    Thanks.

Probably not helping by adding more options but I think the r9 280x pips all the cards mentioned and even outperforms the 770 GTX in some cases. It costs roughly the same as the 760 GTX. It's the one I'm running right now and it's a really solid card. Do keep in mind that the r9 series are essentially rebranded and repackaged entries from the 7xxx series with a few cosmetic and technical tweaks but they cost around the same as their forebearers, sometimes even a little cheaper.

660 ti is a good card. How much you paying for it. And if you are.getting it cheaper all the better. 660 ti over an r9 270

    Don't won't to go over €250 on a card.

Prices I'm seeing online as follows:

    GTX 760: €230 - €250
    GTX 660Ti: €160 - €180
    R9 270: €190 - €230

To me a 10% increase doesn't justify speeding near €70 more on a 760 plus the fact your losing 192 on the CUDA clock, I though more was better?

If those are the prices take the 660ti for sure. But I don't see anything nearly that cheap with geizhals, where did you find those prices for the 660ti?

    660 ti all the way.

Two I seen on eBay, missed out on them, sale ended :(

All I can see now for round that price is the GTX660 on eBay, Dabs & Pixmania

They seem cheap enough them, will have to have a look online at some benchmarks. Would I see any gains with that card over a GTX one seeing as I have an AMD 990FX board?

The 270 > 660 gtx on any board. Definitely the best mid range card out there atm.

And the 760GTX > 270 according to this:

    http://www.hwcompare.com/16557/geforce-gtx-760-vs-radeon-r9-270/

Asus GTX 760 1006MHz 2GB DirectCU II OC @ €237 on Dabs.ie, think I will go with it

The 760 is of course but it also costs 80-90 more.

There's a good bit of overclocking headroom on those 270's as well.

It depends on the budget. A 280x would be better again.

Suppose I could do that and with the 80 - 90 left over upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 8GB :)

Scan, overclockers .co.uk have some good deals as well.

Reason? That 680 will still be Faster then Asus 660ti. I had Asus Card myself and it was average or even on poor side with overclocking. Its all about silicon lottery.
The other thing is, that stock 680 cooler is not bad at all. I got a stock 680 myself.

I do understand if you dont want to get second hand card though.

Asus are never top performance for overclocking their oc models are always behind. But Asus do use quality parts.

Gigabyte for me have better oc results and cooling throw in the fact that they also usually have lowest prices compared to other top brands ,considering above, makes them a great buy.

P.s (I own an Asus card)

But op stick to what you like it is all that really matters. A few frames , or degrees , once you are happy stats don't factor in.

lol I just followed one of the links to that adverts.ie site, there's some unrealistic asking prices such as this one.

    http://www.adverts.ie/graphics-cards/asus-nvidia-gtx680-dc2t-1201-mhz-top-edition/4795095#comments

The guy wants €390 for the 680 card, even though you can get an Asus 770 DirectCU II from amazon for £242 (about €295 at current rates).
I'm pretty sure the 770 is slightly faster than an equivalent model 680 also.

People seem to want to sell 2nd hand 2 year old cards at almost the same prices they paid when new.

Thats the idiocy of adverts m8. I was toying with Idea of second 680 and prices people wanted for one in adverts are freaking plain stupid. I payed 550eu for my 680 when it was new. Selling now, I would consider myself happy to sell it for 220eu cash.
the 680 I linked is the very first 680 I sow reasonably priced. I would get it myself if I would not have decided to get monitor first and then see how urgent the additional power is needed. Plus seller is in Dublin and I would not buy a GPU without testing it.

    I got a 7970 on Ebay.

The first one arrived and it turned out to be a broken 7950.

Got refunded and tried again. Second time lucky.

Forget the r9 270x. If you are getting a 270 go with the regular . Same diff.

Personally I'd get the 760 but that's just me. 270 makes financial/performance sense. And as your friend said mantle which increases performance for some games.

Adverts and eBay Ireland ? Seems 80% of the Irish population have a hard time grasping the word "depreciation". English seem to deal better just my own opinion but they are better bargain hunters .Irish seem embarrassed by haggling in general shops/on holidays blah blah.

It doesn't help that half of them overpaid on their purchases in the first place.

Some guy spends 2k on a pc worth 1k then thinks he can sell it 3 years down the line for 1500.

    This right here.

    So many times,

fiction- ( step right up bitches and gentlemen, here we have a 2 k "beast" pc) and "some" of them probably believe this to be true.

Fact (No it is a 3 year old lesson not to buy from certain custom pc makers)

I wouldn't be too quick to knock off Dell, my son has an XPS 720 Q6600 and it's a great machine, plays BF4 & COD Ghost no problem, may not be on ultra settings but still good none the less.

The last dell I bought was an XPS Gen 4 back in 2005.
The issue I have now is mainly the fact you can get a much higher performance custom specced machine for the same price.

Last week, out of curiousity, I had a look at the alienware range on the dell website. The customisation pricing is strange to say the least. If you opt for windows 7 home premium instead of the default 8.1, you have to pay €62 more (€130 if you want windows 7 home pro).

The default graphics card was set as a somewhat underwhelming R9 270, to upgrade this to a 760 added €310 to the price. Lol I seriously doubt the price difference between those cards is that much....

Why do you need to upgrade? I've been sitting on a couple of 480s for years now. No games have really been taxing since everything has been stagnated by consoles.
I say wait until you actually need to upgrade, then you'll get some juicy "next gen" card or maybe even the 780s will come down with the new models being released soon.

Exactly. I'll still be posting here helping people who want to self build.

It's just to offer people who want pre built a better option than what's out there atm.

I have a full range of pc's for all uses made up. They beat the competition in price and specs right across the board.

    That wouldn't be hard though.

Will youu be buying parts through wholesalers or will you still be purchasing through retail/consumer outlets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

    Retail/Consumer.

I don't plan on having much stock/inventory. That way I can keep parts/builds current and up to date nor do I have the money to buy large stock levels from wholesale.

If the business grows to a level where it's viable I might change.

    Where you basing the business?

Be good to have somewhere local :D

I'm not running a walk in shop. It's online only.

Running the business from home to keep costs down so I can offer great prices.

PC World looking €419 for the GTX 760 OC  PC World up north worked out at €290 (work that one out)

You could have got a non-reerence gtx770 for about the same price ...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Nvidia-PCI-E-Graphics-Card/dp/B00D3ES1Q0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1393413585&sr=8-4&keywords=gtx770

And the 760oc model would have been cheaper here also

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Nvidia-GTX760-PCI-E-Graphics/dp/B00DMUN9TE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1393413640&sr=8-4&keywords=gtx760

EDIT : sorry, just noticed you said you DIDN'T buy it from PCW, hope you got it cheaper elsewhere ;)

but, it's no wonder bricks and mortar can't compete with online, if you compare €420 vs about €230 for a 760 card... hah Pete's used to really crack me up, I went in for the amusement factor (when it was still open back in about 2012) once and seen cards several generations old selling for about €100 more than the 670 I'd bought from hwvs in Germany :)

I agree that bricks & mortar stores will never be able to compete but €419 is very, very questionable. Maplin selling the same card cheaper for €299 which is unusual for them. Had some money off vouchers and got it a bit cheaper, a bit dearer than online but at least I got the card straight away and any issues it's just a quick trip to the store to return it.

Thanks for all the help everyone :)
