What is your favourite image from a film. This is mine. I don't know why. But it is ace. Hope to get it for a wall in my house one day. Hope I can attach the image correctly.

For anyone who doesn't recognise it, ET is under the sheet.

God, have so many favourites, but the following would be one of 'em for sure:

I "collect" stills of people just before they kiss. Not Hollywood Beautiful people. Like John C. Reilly, or Steve Buscemi, that sort of actor. It pleases my soul for some reason.

There's precious few things more cinematic/photogenic than a Samurai, Seven Samurai has some great shots:

Also Harakiri has what most be one of the most beautifully shot sword fights ever:

A shot of Marge and Norm discussing his stamp design. Mundane, but beautiful imo. Lot of lovely scenes in Fargo though.

Stanley Kubrik movies always look amazing with some great stills from The Shining and Space Odessey 2001. This still from 'Eyes Wide Shut' is one of my favourites. The central spotlight, the macabre feeling with creepy robed figures and masks staring at the audience.

    Too many to choose from

Pulp Fiction - The adrenaline shot

La Haine - I was gonna choose the still of Vince in the mirror doing the Robert De Niro/gun bit, but then this just popped into my head...

Apocalypse Now - The napalm strike

A Clockwork Orange - Another Kubrick one. Scared me shitless the first time I saw it. Still resonates today

I could pick any close up of Falconetti in The Passion of Joan of Arc, but I have this one on hand. Her face is simply so incredibly emotive, transmitting the sadness, weariness and pride of the character. The close-up is one of cinema's key images, but Dreyer perfected it all those decades ago:

    passionofjoanofarc.png

A different sort of close-up, the 'blended' faces of Ullman and Andersson in Persona is a startlingly visual representation of the film's themes and concerns.

    persona_two_faces.jpg

Another from C.T. Dreyer, this haunting shot from Ordet has an almost spiritual quality about it that perfectly articulates what actually takes place during that astonishing closing sequence:

    ordet.png

This pair of images from Miyazaki send shivers down my spine every single time. As iconic as cinema gets. Actually, when I put them side by side like this and see an accidental sort of visual balance and thematic harmony form (the relationship between the mundane and the surreal, the innocent and the mysterious), I think I love them even more :)

    spiritedaway-train.jpg

    Totoro_Bus_stop.jpg

Or the unforgettable final shot from A Separation, a long take that is one of contemporary cinema's most utterly devastating moments, visualising the film's key relationship in one heartbreaking image. If it's less explicitly beautiful than many of the images cited above, what it communicates through such a simple scene is so wonderfully elegant.
