I am looking for suggestions to use on a gaming night with my mates, looking for things similar to...

    Street Fighter
    Mario Kart
    Mortal Kombat

Pretty much any games where you play against your mates rather than along side.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Mega Bomberman or one of the Super Bomberman titles would need a good choice, assuming you have a multi tap and extra controllers.
    Samurai Shodown on the Snes,
Micro Machines 2 and later come with extra controller ports built into the Megadrive cart and are great fun.

Forget the Mortal Kombat games, they are utter crap.

Get a Neo Geo Emulator and some good fighting games like Garou Mark of the Wolves, Art of Fighting 3, Samurai Showdown 2, King of Fighters '97 or Real Bout Fatal Fury 2.

Wind jammers and NBA Jam are great as well.

Sunset riders on snes is good fun, zombies ate my neighbours too

+1 each for Bomberman, Micro Machines and Wind Jammers!

We used to have much fun with the SNES Micro Machines game, added bonus that two people could play on a single controller, thanks to the d-pad like button layout! Two controllers = 4 player madness across the kitchen table, getting stuck on cereal and sliding/slowing down in puddles of milk!

Mashed: Fully Loaded on PS2 (not sure if that counts as retro yet though) is an animal of a 2 player game. If you've got a multi-tap you can hit 4 player in it too. Basically, it's the same idea as Micro Machines, except with guns... And craic. Few beers and a few rounds of this with friends is monster fun.

Couldn't agree more with the above. mashed in 2 - 4 (4 player is better) is one of the best local multiplayer ever, especially the ice levels, much satisfaction bumping your fellow mate of the road :P

My flatmate and I put a hundred hours into Mashed: Fully Loaded a couple of years ago. It's a shame it never got a sequel because it's incredibly good fun. We played so much of it we were nearly in need of a pro-mod version where the weapons are harder to use.

Micro Machines V3 on the PS was brilliant, a really good looking game.

Have you played the Megadrive versions?

The cart itself is called a 'J' cart and has two ports build into it. So you can use the above two players per pad logic and get an 8 player game going. It's insane :D

Is it A + C for left and right?

The SNES has the A,B,X,Y buttons laid out similar to the D pad, so it was simple enough swap of the controls!

I know ya mentioned mariokart in the op, but jaysus, nothin is as good as battle mode on the snes mariokart. Best two player game ever!

Yep, that's it alright. It's fairly rudimentary but does the job :D

Actually an interesting hack would be to split out the pads for that 8 player support - so each person had a pad each. Even if it only used two buttons.

Super Smash Bros. on the GC, +1 on Los Lobos for snes Mario Kart.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo - this is tons of fun and can get very competitive :>

Also Puzzle Bobble (aka Puyo Pop), Sega Tetris (DC)

For the retro fighting games, could I humbly suggest breakers revenge. If a group of fg players get together with alcohol it seems inevitably this game will get pulled out.

Not retro but in a similar vein DIVEKICK! is a game I've seen attract masses of people at conventions despite being a simple 2 button game.

Personally I've always had a soft spot for sonic 2's 2 player mode too.

Team Buddies on the PS1, great great game.

That reminds me, anybody know the name of a 4 player game on the PS1 that was sort of like Bomberman. Difference was you walked around picking **** up and throwing it at the other people. Rocks, trees, whatever. Remember renting it back in the 90's and it just came back to me. It was almost certainly Japanese and had an odd name. Also it wasn't Powerstone, it's the PS1 for sure.

edit: It's called Poy Poy. Must give this another whirl in an emulator.

Unholy War is great on PSX if you want VS.

    I raise you Double Dash.

Only down side is Luigi Mansion arena, some ****er always goes up top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,699 ✭✭✭deathrider

I have to agree with Double Dash. I only got to play it a handful of times, but it was an amazing amount of four player craic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Had Bomberman '93 on the Wii virtual console, so much fun for such a simple game!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's the best version I've played. 5 player and it has none of the crazier power ups from later games that seemed to unbalance it and reduce the random elements where even the best players would blow themselves up.

Not played the saturn version in 10 player yet so I'll reserve the right to change my opinion.

It did have some of the crazy ones though, but that just added to the fun of it in my opinion. Getting the reversed controls, and ending up trapped in a corner, or the constantly dropping bombs while perhaps annoying if you're trying to play in a serious manner, were just causes of extra hilarity when playing with friends!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well the Virii were always meant to be crazy and should be avoided. I meant stuff like the kangaroos and remote controlled bombs that really unbalanced the games in favour of skilled players. In '93 the big skill power up is the kick bomb but even then extremely cocky players (i.e. me) would still end up blowing themselves up through idiocy so it still had a touch of randomness to the game that made it exciting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

AFAIK, the remote control bombs were in 93, weren't they?

I actually used to deliberately get the virii if the game seemed weighed too much in my favour, to keep it fun for my opponent!

Think they might have only been in single player.

I used to do that as well. Was great fun giving bomb diarrhea to everyone :)

We'll have to get a few multitaps and some extra controllers and we're good to go, I have the game here.
You'd imagine it wouldn't be rocket science to have a VC edition and let the filthy rabble finally play 10 player HD Bomberman!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

I really want to play 10 player Saturn Bomberman before I die. I think they had it at the Replay expo a couple of years ago but there wasn't anybody to play against at the time I was there unfortunately.

I am with you on this!
We have to make that happen eventually. I am happy to join the 10 player roster!

The standard Saturn Bomberman can have 10 players, can't it?
This is definitely something we can do so.

Disappointingly they only had a 6 joypads hooked up. Most other people were more interested in playing lan Gaylo.

Yeah, it was mad when that was running at a Beers a while ago, not as cool as 8 player Mario Kart DD though, that was fantastic.

Which version of Pang is 2 player? Is it just the Arcade version or does Super Pang on the SNES have it too?

Edit : Although the arcade game and the PS1 version allowed two players to play simultaneously, the Super Nintendo version has only one player mode :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 728 ✭✭✭Los Lobos

I love Pang arcade, but two player is too messy, it's better as a one player game imo

Wow, I always assumed it was 2 player on the mighty Snes...
Interesting then that the lowly ZX Spectrum version has 2 player simultaneous play!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Probably down to the awful CPU on the SNES. For a game like Pang with so many sprites of screen it would have been slow down city. The ZX Spectrum for all it's faults has a surprisingly nippy 8-bit processor.

And that is why I loved my Speccy.
I must get mine out of the dusty box it lives in and show it some love.

Road Rash 2 (and probably others) has split screen i think.

Oh yes, the 3 Megadrive titles sure do, and while we're at it so do the Lotus titles from EA.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's not a great mutliplayer game though. It's very rare you have a close race.

    Master of the Universe

Reminds me of 2 player split screen in Road Rash 2.

Sounds like a great idea but it doesn't work. One person comes off their bike, other person speeds ahead - no contact at all for the rest of the race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 453 ✭✭Shiranui

Yes, best multiplayer racers are IMHO Micro Machines and Mashed: Fully Loaded (PS2)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I remember having shedloads of fun playing Beetle Adventure Racing on the N64 back in the day too. Not played it in years, so dunno how well it holds up.

The frame rate can drop but it's fun.
Not a game I put a vast amount of time into tbh.
