Im a bit confused. Ok so I know that protein is needed for muscles to recover. Now every tom dick and harry seems to be on whey after the gym. I am thinking about going on it myself but am a bit confused to as what it will do.
so I go to the gym day 1 and don't take any whey after but instead just let the protein come from my diet. Day 2 is a rest day. day 3 go back to the gym. would the muscles worked out in day 1 still not be recovered by day 3 using the protein from the food in the previous two days without the need to take whey.

I know its confusing what im asking but it seems clear in my head.

whey helps you recover faster but is there a need for it if you have a rest day in between each workout?

Think of a scoop of plain whey as a powdered chicken breast. It's just a convenient/cheap way to get some protein in your diet.

In general muscle takes approx 48 hours to be fully recovered.

Jumping in on this one, is there a downside to doubling up on protein scoops.. One I'm taking for the last while, turns out I'm only supposed to of take one scoop, but have been taking two scoops(force of habit previous brand two scoops was suggested).. Would the extra calories have a negative impact?

Depends on what you're doing with the extra calories TBH. If you're hitting the weights heavy then the extra calories might be benefitting you, if you're maintaining your weight they might tip you over or if its a mass gainer powder of some sort you might be way over. How many calories per scoop are we talking? Or what powder is it?

It's the MyProtein one.. I'm lifting 5 days a week, and still maintaining my weight(give or take a KG)..

If you're generally maintaining on the extra scoop without adding fat I wouldnt be too worried to be honest, unless there is some medical reason as to why they state not to take more than one scoop..

Im not too familiar with that specific protein myself.

Protein on day 3 is to recover from the workout on day 3.

You eat protein everyday, whey is just food. If you any sort of normal diet, a single scoop of whey isn't going to make a big difference.
