Since its a human right to have clean drinking water, will you be paying the shambolic tax.

Yes water needs treatment, but is that not what my paye goes to.

I for one will not be paying it.

It'll absolutely kill me to do it, but I feel like I'll have no choice but to pay it.

    Yes

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I'm not against the idea of water or council rates in principle (as in taking for granted that that;s what you actually pay towards), It's arbitrary stealth charges like property tax and USC that irk me to be honest.

It is not a human right to have drinking water pumped to your house free of charge to use for flushing toilets, washing clothes, watering lawn, power hosing foothpaths etc. So, yes, happily not pay for the 2lts I drink a day, will have to pay for the rest. Just need to reduce it.

    To quote from that link:

'Affordable. Water, and water facilities and services, must be affordable for all. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) suggests that water costs should not exceed 3 per cent of household income.'

In theory i don't really have a problem with a water tax but they have to remember we also pay a property tax and motor tax. So long as they keep these 3 payments at a reasonable rate then fair enough.

The link that says this?: accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses.

    Affordable doesn't mean free.

No,on my estate they are not metering they are charging a flat rate per house, so my neighbor has offered to run a hose into my house and charge me 75% less than the flat charge.

    It's not a water charge.

    It's a stealth tax.

If it meant that our income tax was reduced or commercial rates came down or something reduced to balance it out then you could argue that it was anything other than a stealth tax.

probably, which proves its just another "tax" if it was simply a "water charge" then those having their water provided would be charged accordingly with the proffits going back into investment in the infrastructure, those who have wells would be exempt from the charge as they have to pay for the infrastructure and relevant equipment out of their own pockets

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

we all have to pay for water. I see it as no difference as electric or gas coming into your house.
as a plumber i see the wastage people are doing with water. I have seen the cost of a treatment plant having worked in one for a time in my life.
we are lucky in ireland to have bore holes and valleys that can feed drinkable water to any part of this country but it has to come at a cost.
we in ireland should only be paying no more than 250 per year for water and i think thats reasonable enough to drink, wash and get rid of waste for a small price.

Have you read it yourself yet or are you still under the illusion that your entitled to free water?

Reservoirs, pump stations, water towers, pipe distribution, water treatment, energy costs, operations and maintenance plus the fact the majority of water treated doesn't actually make it to the end user. These are all things that need to be paid for, so while some may contest the availability of clean water is a right, these things still need to be paid for. One of the few "taxes" that I will have no problem paying for. I can live without televisions, I can live without a car but I cannot live without clean water. Just my opinion anyway.

Water in general is recycled no matter how its used.

I'm curious. Now that I'm paying for water do I have a say in whether or not they are putting fluoride in it. will this water "tax" be used to better the service, fix pipes ,cut back on wasted water from the system..... or just make some fat
    Cat fatter.

This is my concern too. I have no issue with paying for water in theory. As long as the money is used to upgrade the water systems and lessen the amount of waste, in particular I would like the 1 day a month I have to go without a water supply to go away. But considering this is Ireland and considering that the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour then I won't be holding my breath.

But to answer your question OP, yes I probably will pay.

totally agree they are losing about 30% through leaks but the infrastructure needs investment and this is where the monies will come from to fix these problems. and what they take in will needed to be put back in

I must admit I like the idea of paying for what you use. As in it gives an incentive for people as a whole to conserve water.
