I'm in the arse end of west county Clare and after a day and a half without electricity, is just after coming back on.

Given the horrendous and very dangerous conditions here for the last two days it's a credit to ESB workers that they have it back on so soon.

    Fair play lads!

In before the bitterness. And yeh, they were just doing their job, but it's still a hard and dangerous job.

I agree. I was without power most of yesterday and it came back at about 0130 last night.

The lads were obviously out all night.

    Fair play.:)

Indeed. Didn't lose power here, but plenty in the area did. Big thank you to the Council workers and telecom guys who have also been out in the horrendous weather getting road cleared and lines up again.

Thank you ESB workers from the Kingdom of Kerry. The conditions that you had to face in some parts here were horrendous but you carried on.

Absolutely. Sometimes "Yore ma" should be allowed. It's still a classic.

ESB doing stupendous work in often dangerous situations. Fair play to them - public service at its best. Was lucky enough not to lose power in the storm myself. :D

No need. Good salaries and allowances. And well deserved.

Again, well done ESB Networks. Going out repairing lines in that weather for the past weeks was tremendous.

Climb a few poles? You could train monkeys to do that.

Dont think people will have too much concern when they get their next ESB bill. Seems a price hike has been made :(

The council workers too and gardai were out, blocking roads and cutting trees very late last night in Limerick. Big well done to all of them...apart from........

Too right I'm bitter - average salary € 75,000.00 per annum per worker

    Meh

Billing is separate to network maintenance. If your electricity goes out due to damaged lines, it doesn't matter whether your supplier is Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis or Airtricity; your power goes out.
There were price hikes for all suppliers a few months ago, yeh. It's a balls, but they're not going to add huge sums to their bills. Winter usage is what will do that. But it's never consumption of course, "it's the price hikes Joe!"

I wouldn't even mind so much if these jobs were relatively unskilled and unqualified.

Certainly a big thank you is in order to them, no easy task being out in those conditions working on downed lines and the like.

So what's it like to earn 2.5 times the average industrial wage lads ;)

I'm not an ESB engineer. I didn't study electrical engineering at all, let alone get the amount of qualifications in it that you'd need to be an ESB engineer.
So yeh, the "average industrial wage" thing is completely irrelevant. People in other jobs who have those kind of qualifications and earn that kind of money (and more) are not constantly questioned in relation to their earnings, nor do they disingenuously get the "average industrial wage" line directed at them.

I suspect the people out last night are on the lower end of the scales, and the CEO/CFO on the €400K+ etc hardly knew there was a crisis.

To be honest my pension is higher than that but I did not work in ESB nor as an electrician.

Rest assured the guy up the poles and masts last night were not the ones on 75k.

And it might look less foolish if you think before you assume next time.

Indeed, but go a little bit beyond that and we see someone talking about 2.5 times avg industrial salary. This is factually incorrect.

So on average, we are saying well done to the lads, getting power sorted (fair play to them). And their is still the mein feiners looking for something to complain about. (I Love you guys, you make Ireland, Ireland, your so bitter sweet, I'm prity sure you would find a problem with where a hedgehog hibernates)

I praised all the workers out last night. What I said was they aren't on €75,000. They did a great job in most difficult conditions. The guys at the top boost the average salary up massively.

    Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what Rightwing did wrong. Saying those last night wouldn't be earning anything like senior management was just an observation, not a contradiction. And a well warranted STFU to idiotic comments about "Hur durrrrrrr average wage of 2 million, even the cleaning lady."

That's the maths bit, probably catches most people out.

2 workers in a company, 1 guy on a million, other on 20K. The punter thinks average salary in that company massive.

When did you think I was talking about you, really I wasn't, I stated a observation that people, will actually, try to play down something good, particularly when not effected by the good, to be a lesser action. I see that happen alot in Ireland, we actually invented the bitter sweet emotion, but that is cool. :)

As I said Fair play to the guys, in fact in the earn less than €60,000 as a person (eg knowledge based on our electricity network), I would worry about this country.

Average is a completely useless gauge in this case, because it fails to illustrate how so many e.g. admin people earn well less than 30k (not that that's a terrible salary, but it's hardly high) and there are senior execs and senior technical people on six-figure salaries (arguably too high). However that doesn't stop the bitter brigade anyway.
"Der all earnin' 70k Joe" (it can veer between 70 and 95, depending on who's a more blatant liar) "and der all in charge of electricity to the old people's homes".

I understand the maths thank you very much
my initial post was a response to someone complaining about 75k to which i replied they earned it last night
you then jumped in with the ceo is on 400k i dont care what they are on they earned it last night is my point

What makes ESB workers so special? Are we going to make a special thread for the postman too who must deliver letters in "terrible conditions"?
Ironic that most Irish people hold soldiers in disdain. Now there's a profession where the brave lads really do put their life on the line.

See this is an example of what would come ahead, of my last post, it was a very simple OP, "Thanking you for working all night to turn back on my electricity", I mentioned "Fair play to the guys".

AH it appears needs to earth itself , bizarrest form of discussion I have ever heard.

Well it doesn't cost anyone to say 'well done'. I think most private sector workers in society aren't appreciated enough either.

The problem with soldiers is, is there any great need for them in this day and age. The 9,000/10,000 of them at any rate.

"Most"? On what do you base that? I'm guessing... an idea in your head.

Yes we certainly do need our soldiers. The army is a great outlet for lads who are from disadvantaged areas and are a bit rough around the edges and could do with some hard discipline. Warm fuzzy hugs from softy lefties won't do them any good.

Sorry it just annoys me when nutters like Margaretta D'arcy enjoy support for obstructing allied military forces in the country. She is a criminal found guilty in a court of law and we have radical politicians tripping over themselves to visit her.

You've stumbled on the wrong thread.

But I certainly disagree with the first point, and probably the second one as well.
