THE PSNI has promised to investigate how a police landrover ended up in County Donegal.Former Donegal Mayor Frank McBrearty has demanded a Garda investigation into the “international incident” in the Border town of Lifford today.
What an ejit to drive over the border, can they not read road signs? Will they be getting done for driving without due care and attention :D

Road signs? Fairly easy to miss this in the dark.

Can happen quite easily there if they weren't from the area. Seen vice versa a couple of times meself, and they probably never realised they crossed the border. McBrearty is more concerned about local elections than international incidents.

What Lifford really needs is a grip shop, because Cllr McBrearty clearly needs to get one.

anyone who knows that border crossing will know that the jeep is literally 20 meters from the border, he prob went up to the roundabout to turn back because it is the only place to turn there, especially in a jeep. a non incident.

Its very easy to cross into NI from ROI without realizing it. Although there is a slight variety in the road surfacing between North and South of the Border. Its not like every crossing has you are now entering the ROI

No chance they'd take that madman McBrearty with them on their way back?

Well considering that our actual enforcement overlords are mostly absent, unless someone spreads a rumour of dodgy diesel, I'd say that having the Ice Cream Van over increased the policing presence in Donegal by at least oh, 25% :D

Cop takes Lifford exit, can't do a u turn across traffic, does least worst option and goes twenty metres over border to roundabout. Tribunal now unnecessary. Where do I send the bill? :)

They entered Ireland - turn through 180 degrees at the same location and there's THREE very large signs.

And then there's the firearms they illegally imported if people want to nitpick.

    All told though, mountain/molehill scenario.

"This is an international incident and should be fully investigated. What would of happened if dissidents had of opened fire on the PSNI in broad daylight in Lifford where citizens of our country are going about their daily business.?"

Shots fired? Blame the guys they were firing at!

Frank McBrearyu has shown his low level of intelligence with this one. He called it an international incident and demanded the UN and EU are involved. He truely is a cretin and to think that he's actually being paid by donegal county council who are up to their eyes in debt makes things worse. He should resign now before he becomes the laughing stock of Europe.

What really pisses me off is that there is no border staff to check my passport when I cross the border any more.

I felt so much safer when the Garda or the RUC would stop my car to see what was in the boot. That gave me a sense of security, a sense that the general public were being protected. And seeing the occasional blacked up face pointing a rifle at me from the ditch. Now that WAS real security.

Oh yes, it's getting worser it is. Where will it end?

The Gardai never seemed too stressed whenever we were stopped at the old border crossings in comparison to how British Army and RUC would act.Remember my little brother was playing with an old Fisher Price kids camera when we were stopped at a checkpoint near Newry, and a young British soldier nearly losing the rag because photography wasn't permitted. He calmed down eventually, but took as long as possible searching the car.

True, probably cos the British Army knew they could get whacked at any time, yet the shooting of a Garda was very rare in comparison. A lot of the younger British soldiers were under real mental stress on tours of N.I.

Presumably this was way back in the day? Maybe 80's or early 90's? Not sure if the fisher price camera's could take pictures, but back then would you put it past the IRA to have their kids take photo's for a target list? Because I wouldn't. The kid would think they are just playing, while some young soldiers face ends up on a wall marked for death.

Also, crossing the border? As others have said, they probably went round the roundabout and straight back over the border after coming this side accidentally.

If you knew this road this is a very simple mistake to make, they probably went past the exit to the shop on the NI side of the bridge for whatever reason and it's impossible to turn with out going over the border and around the roundabout about 20 feet into Donegal, they did the safest thing in that situation if that's what happened.

International incident. Ha ha. The small time politics of local councillors. It's hilarious to read the message minutes of local council meetings. The petty **** they waste time arguing over is hilarious. But they fact they are wasting tax payers money is worse.

Reminds me of the story where some Irish Labour members ended up accidentally knocking on doors canvassing for Frank McBrearty in the North.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It's hardly a huge deal, it's not like they drove all the way to Letterkenny. Mistakes happen, I know of two Irish army jeeps that have strayed north in the past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Teyla Emmagan

Realistically if you missed the 'welcome to donegal' or 'welcome to fermanagh' signs you'd be over the border in a flash. Until he sees armoured tanks rolling down that road I think Councillor McBrearty can relax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,208 ✭✭✭keithclancy

The person in the van drove over an open border, whats the issue ?

You'd think it was the Berlin wall or something.

    Edit:

On the way to work I saw a Dutch convoy of these rolling down the German Autobahn (a67/a40 Dutch/German border crossing)
