Hi I need one done and don't know whether to go private or public. No insurance.

Had shoulder done in December private. Cost 2,500.

Quotes for knee arthroscopy in Beacon 950 hospital, 500 anaesthetic, 1000 surgeon.

Sports Clinic Santry, all in 2780.

Any idea how long the public waiting list is??

How did it go? I am booked for 7 March and have golf match 11 April? Optimistic or not?

Had one in Tallaght, public but saw the bill, was 2000 or so.

Recovery from the operation is quick, but depending on how much the issue you had limited you beforehand and for how long, full recovery can take time and physio.

After the scope I felt like my leg was a big swollen ball for 3 days, then on the morning of the 4th day the swelling had mostly gone and my leg felt almost normal again except for minor aches and pains. The wounds were sealed completely by 3 weeks, I removed my own stitches after 2 weeks because they were so tight they were flaying my skin.

was it a meniscal tear you had?

That is what I have plus have to get the prepatellar bursa removed.

Yeah, it was a bucket handle tear that lay flat on MRI but when I extended my leg it got stuck like a fork in a hinge and subluxed the joint. It used to happen now and then, but got more frequent and I was seeing an awful consultant who kept insisting more physio was needed, so over 2 years I effectively lost use of my leg completely as my brain was 'guarding' and wouldn't let me use it.

I could barely walk by the time I got a new consultant and 6 weeks later he operated. Because of all the time that had passed I had completely wasted quads and glutes on that side and suffered (and continue to suffer) a whole heap of compensation problems (over tightening on one side etc..).

But the knee itself is great now! I ran 7k earlier no problems. My running biomechanics are good but my walking biomechanics are still bad from all the years of guarding, but I just get on with it.
