Mame Recommendations

Much as I hate list threads, sometimes needs must. What I'm looking for are some recommendations for mame...obviously I own every pcb in existence so copyright isn't an issue. If it was kept to top 5's, or top 10's at most, rather than lines & lines of game name.

Shooters, Fighters, Racers, Beat em Ups, Platformers, etc etc please :)

grab some custom xml's for hyperspin. Genres, top 100's, The 80's, The 90's etc etc.
They are pretty handy and you can of course have your own top 10's as well.

These custom xml's...where would one obtain such files? Are these basically akin to different sets of lists/wheels you can navigate, ie genres etc?

Think hyperspin site has some of them.

I use hyperspin which uses the full mame xml. Hyperspin itself then let's you save favourites without messing up the xml

Plus I think a simple front end like mala allows you to easily filter games by genre and other selections just off the full mame xml.

Hyperspin does have genres but again these are individual xmls

The New Zealand Story, Alien Vs Predator, Puzzle Bobble, Mr.Do! and Gauntlet.

I've been playing them all recently. Track and Field is also fantastic.

Dark Seal was probably my most played MAME game. Isometric Gauntlet-like thing with a novel power up system. Worth a go anyway.

One of my alltime faves, which I originally played in the arcades was Captain Commando which is a final fight type game. Pumped so many coins into that bad boy when I was a kid...

I built a cab recently and threw up a load of games onto it... if I was to choose the top 6 the family has enjoyed playing, it would be these (in no particular order)

    Street Fighter II Champion Edition
    Bubble Bobble
    Asteroids
    Robocop
    Double Dragon
    Shinobi

Snow Bros. 2 + Bubble Bobble probably get played the most. Though not strictly Mame, I use Nebula to play Daytona USA & Sega Rally.

Based on Personal preference and what gets played on my cab:
Bubble Bobble , Gauntlet , Pacland, Midnight Resistance and Streetfighter 2.
    (..runners up: pang ,galaga,shinobi,Aliens, R-Type)

The Punisher, Road Blasters, Cabal, Rambo 3, The Chase HQ games, Teenage Mutant Turtles are some that I have enjoyed in arcades growing up.

I'm sure Oisín will recommend the Metal Slug games!

I'm currently trying to set up Mame on my Rapsberry Pi, and my iPad if that fails.

After beating the MD port of Super Hang On, I'm itching to try my hand at the Arcade port as i never played it.

The Punisher!, a classic. Hard to believe it used CPS1 hardware but still stands up next to the later Side-Scrollers on the CPS2 hardware.

My favourites would be (In no particular order)

    Wonder Boy in Monster Land
    Shinobi and/or Shadow Dancer
    Teenage Mutant Ninja/Hero Turtles
    Puzzle Bobble
    SFII CE
    SnowBros
    Aliens

    [edit]
    And Metal Slug.

It's such a lovely game. Right shame the original boards are so hard to come by. I have to make do with a bootleg :(

Those Capcom CPS1 & CPS2 side scrolling brawlers are some of the best things they ever put out.

Now we're talking (so long as you're referring to the Konami 1990 game)!

    Flamethrower FTW!

Granted, they added in a bunch of makey-uppey aliens, most of which looked ridiculous, but damnit, it's a great game!

Definitely need to record a play through of it one of these days.

Gas poster to that one, I guess they thought Sigourney's chest wasn't appealing enough :D

They also got the hair colours mixed up between Ripley and Newt.

Actually some of those screenshots are interesting - the colours are different to the World version I have (which would be the same as that US poster). The blue sky in the 3rd pic is purple in game I thought. The eggs in the bottom pic are the wrong colour also, should be light brown (although they do flash a different colour when shot).

Looks like there are some differences between the Japanese and Western versions. Maybe the screenshots are from the Japanese one? (they might have changed some palette colours too when releasing it here)

There are actually two different versions of Aliens. The Japanese version (probably the initial release) is lacking the APC stages, as well as Newt. The game in general is a bit easier, with enemies taking less hits, and power-ups are much more frequent. There are a few new minor enemies, and some of the other ones appear at different points. The final battle is actually harder, with the Alien Queen having an attack that sends out multiple images of herself, as opposed to the acid spit in the other version.

Jeremy Parish did an article on those Konami arcade flyers. It ended up being an article about a vest top because the same vest top is used in all their arcade flyers. It probably was stinking by the end.

I knew about the lack of APC stages in the Japanese version but that's interesting about the Queen alien attacks being different. Wouldn't mind seeing that in action.

I've always wondered if there is any points difference
between throwing her out the airlock with the caterpillar and just shooting her to death. Shooting takes longer so is a bit harder - you've only got the basic weapon in that final battle. I know the ending screen shot or her falling out the airlock is different - one she looks normal, the other she's in pieces
. Must test it out sometime.

Super Hang-On Arcade is hard as nails!
Far, far less room for error compared to the Mega drive version.
Struggling to even get near the end of the Intermediate course.

This one is going to take me a while!

    Street fighter hyper fighting edition
    Mad gear
    Final fight
    Golden axe
    Darius Gaiden
    Alien Vs Predator
    Bust a Move
    Tumblepop
    Strider
    Bionic commando

Most of these were in Coolock Leisureplex when I was growing up so still have fond memories.

Throw Cadillacs and dinosaurs on that list. Great craic.

Of the unlicensed ones, knights of the round was a lot of fun too'
