"Washington (CNN) -- A senior Iranian naval official says Iran is sending warships toward U.S. maritime borders to send a message."

    Have they no postal system???

It's Sunday. The USPS doesn't deliver on Sundays. Maybe a fax would have been better?

And the message is: look at our old crap floating about, please don't send a Coastguard harbour patrol boat and sink our navy..

Are they fcuk. They battered their heads off Iraq for years without winning. The US flattened saddam like a pancake in a single saturday afternoon, between waffles and evening beers. The Irannianians would have more hope of invading Narnia.

If they've any brains, they'll keep their heads down - the US and Israel are dying for an excuse to flatten the gaff. If Commander Sam spotted even a gesture of hostility, it'd be like a christmas present.

That propaganda might work on your gullible mind but don't try fobbing it off here. Do they gas their own people too like the Syrians or take viagra to rape women like the Libyans or throw babies out of incubators like the Iraqis?

And look at these modern weapons that defeated your arrogant, bloated superpower ass in Iraq AND Afghanistan:

Think I heard the same hubris and loudmouthed cockiness back in 2001/2003. Sh1t like "camel jockeys, cave dwellers, cakewalk" etc. I'm under no illusion that USAF could easily pick off these ships but then again don't underestimate Iran's anti-ship missiles. There's no way that Iran would attack anyone. They haven't done so in centuries but if America's past record of getting it's nose bloodied over the past 60 years is anything to go by I would be so smug and scoffing if I was you. Using apache gunships against peashooters in Grenada is nothing to brag about.

"Freedom of the seas doesn't just apply to fish. It applies to all maritime nations, all navies, everywhere -- so long as they understand the responsibilities which come with that freedom," the defense official said.
"So if they chose to send their ships to the Atlantic, I'm sure they won't be surprised to find many, many others already there."
The Iranian navy is the smallest of its military forces, according to GlobalSecurity.org, which tracks defense and intelligence issues.

Actually all Iran is doing is putting ships into the Atlantic Ocean and thats really only because the USA has for years been sending ships into the Persian Gulf.

Interestingly the US Navy is based at Bahrain a country which is ruled by a minority over a majority and fired on demonstrators killing loads. The Americans could have done something but choose not to - having allies is more important to them than democracy.

BTW I looked up the Fars agency the army in Iran has released a new video game. Here is an ad for the earlier version.

I was on holiday in Armenia and met a good few Iranians also on Holiday and they were all a very laid back, cosmopolitan, friendly people not like they are portrayed on the TV or in films at all.

In fairness all the judges and the militia involved with that case have been arrested.

    Now that was propaganda!
Perhaps most despicable is that in addition to his confession of his rape of Atefeh, Judge Razai who served as Judge, Jury and Executioner, also confessed to torturing her during interrogations in order to get her to confess and give up the names of other men she would have had sexual relations with. He also confessed to trying to cover up what he and his cronies had done to Atefeh by speeding up the normal process of court proceedings and hastening the verdict of execution.

No official charges have been filed against “Judge” Rezai after his release. He continues to work as a notorious Iranian “killing” judge, condemning innocent Persians to death and ignoring any manner of accepted judicial practice. His corruption as a puppet “judge” with absolutely no scruples or moral integrity and as a human being are blatant, reprehensible and hideously tragic.

If there's one country where the gap between the people and the regime is more gaping, than it is in Iran, I don't know where it is. The Iranian regime is a paranoid theocracy, the Iranian people just want to get on with their lives, and there's quite a bit of American stuff going on e.g. Coca-Cola, basketball and motor racing. Women have to cover themselves up in public, but under the covers you might find dyed hair, blue jeans, strappy sandals and thongs ...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Just because other countries have human rights issues doesn't make Iran a good place. I know a lot if iranians who live here as they don't support the regime in their country - specifically the treatment of women, religious intolerance and persecution of minorities.

Do Arab leaders have some sort of wierd death wish?
There seems to be a certian cultural trait in the middle east that lends itself to bizzare displays of bravura that seem to almost invite a bombing back to the stone age.
In that regard they kind of remind me of Scrappy Doo, and the way that mad, irritating little half pint would shout 'put 'em up! I'll fight ya, I'll fight ya all!' and challenge anything that moved to throw down.
There's more then a few dictatators around the ME like that would probably still be in power if they'd had enough common sense not to go around kicking hornets nests, like how after 9/11 the Taliban in Afghanistan not only didn't have the good sense to quiety kick Bin Laden out the back door, instead they made him an honourary government minister.
This 'show of strength' on the part of Iran is pitiful, the Yanks should sink the lot for a laugh.

It's just standard stuff, ships can go where they want in international waters

However where they chose to go and when is often used to send a message, esp between countries that are not exactly friendly

It's a little hard to grasp at first, but all countries do it to some extent - watch a film called Thirteen Days

Oh I've seen it. That was a nice bit of poker face from the Russians, but it's not as though they couldn't back up that threat, the Iranians however like Saddam seem fond of putting themselves in daft situations and howling abut American agression while at the same time inviting it.

    The Iranians are Persian.

So they say but the Iranians are no more culturally Persian then Italians are today culturally reflective of the Roman Empire.
Italians today are culturally reflective of European enlightenment thinking like most of western Europe. The Persians weren't muslims, Iran is culturally an Islamic state with far more in common with other Arab nations then it has with ancient Persia, which BTW wasn't just Iran, so many other cultural persians became culturally arabic too.

Yeah peple keep making that point, but the Persians were Persian, the Iranians are more culturally arabic then Persian these days, just as Italians are today more culturally reflective of European enlightenment thinking then the Italy of the Roman Empire. Iran is culturally an Islamic state, the Persians weren't muslims and they weren't confined to Iran either, nobody seems to call the Syrians Persian but they were part of the Persian empire too.

Persian is an ethnic term, not just a cultural one. As obvious as it sounds Iranians do look very different in appearance to Iraqis or Saudi's for example. Eye colour is actually the main giver away, the mix of dark skin and green and blue eyes makes Iranian women incredible looking (well I think so anyway :P).

Ethnically Iranians are Persian (not all Iranians actually only about 60% of them) but the majority are. About 10% of Iranians are Arab, mostly along the Iraqi border and along the Gulf coast.

    And compared to what? Vietnam?
