I recently got a hd dvd reccorder with freeview.

    The spec is shown as
    DR DVB-T MHEG

    I have MUX 48 showing a 60% signal
And MUX 55 showing the same.
However the signal strength is poor.

I have 800 SSU & 811 SSU showing as channels but no reception or epg listing.

Can I receive Saorview with this unit & what would I need to do?

    Many thanks.

A HD DVD recorder? You mean Blu ray?

    What's the make & model?

Chs. 48 & 55 are Maghera, what transmitter does the Saorview coverage checker recommend for your location - http://www.saorview.ie/get-saorview/make-the-switch/coverage-map/

Siganl strength/quality appears to be very low, what type of aerial are you using - indoor or outdoor?

Can you receive the radio channels carried on Saorview?

Not compatible with Saorview, appears to be from early 2008, MPEG-2 standard only. The Irish MPEG-4 standard wasn't chosen until mid 2008.

I have a 2009 RHT497 DVD recorder, also not compatible with Saorview.

Thanks. Maghera would of been ok. I didn't want to replace the aerial only to discover that the box was incompatible.

While signal strength/quality meters in receivers may not be the most accurate they do give a basic indication of what the signal is like, those figures you quote could be too low for stable reception with a compatible receiver.

It was a free gift :-)

I haven't been able to find any specs for the tuner so I didn't know if it was MPEG 4. It's confusing because it apparently plays MPEG 4 video.

The other pity is that it appears to playback via usb but not record to it.

MPEG-4 TVs were beginning to appear on the shelves in 2008 but I don't recall ever coming across a DVD recorder with MPEG-4 decoding.

I use mine occasionally to transfer Saorview recordings to disc.

The manual for that recorder only refers to MPEG2 video compression format for recording.

I'll email LG & see what they say. Otherwise it's a handy recorder.
