Junkie mate just got engaged

So a Mate of mine who's a Heroin addict just got engaged to a stunning looking Girl (not a junkie), now I should add that he's off the gear about 5 years now, but once a junkie always a junkie, and this lad wouldn't look out of place in the Adam & Paul film. But fair play to him for turning his life around. Just goes to show, there's always hope!

    I'm a former smoker - am I still a nicotine junkie?

Many former addicts still consider themselves addicts, it's just that they're currently clean. Helps create a mindset which avoids the justification of "Ah sure I'll try it just once, I'm clean now, I wont get addicted again".

    Does that work?

Once a toddler, always a toddler.
    Once a bed-wetter, always a bed-wetter.
Once a student, always a student.
Once a barman, always a barman.
Once a tired person, always a tired person.
Once a junkie, always a junkie.

I'm not so sure that this works.

What's the point of this thread?

Not sure if I'm supposed to say something derogatory about addicts, or make fun of the OP because he's still single.

So whats the problem then? hes clean the last 5 years and is engaged to a good looking women? what is your problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭ElvisChrist6

Really strange post there, "Fair play to him for getting his act together the filthy junky"... that's honestly how it reads.

Should junkies and ex-junkies not get engaged to non-junkies?

Edit: I just saw your second post, is this actually more of a "See how good things can be" thread, for a brighter outlook? If so, grand, opening post is very misleading though.

That makes it worse. I know that giving up highly addictive substances like alcohol/heroin can be a lifelong struggle, however I would never discredit your tough and commendable efforts to a throwaway weasel word.

Fair play to you then.. nice to see an actual person posting about an issue they have first hand experience of; rather than some jabroni speaking as a third person.

See the thing that most of us here are confused about is this.

You say 'fair play' & 'once a junkie always a junkie' in the OP, on boards.ie.

    Why?

Leave them alone. They're doing grand as far as we're concerned.

Unless you have something more to tell.....

Well op,you might be ok with seeing yourself as a junkie (or rather an addict with the possibility of relapse) but maybe your friend ain't so keen on the title you've given him. Best of luck btw.

Relax OP it's only a matter of time till he has her on the gear, pimps her out and she can be yours for a 10 bag
