Why keep the thread exclusive to the opening ceremony, there are the games as well for the next two weeks. Although the first events were yesterday, or even wednesday.

    ;)

Asked my Russian flatmate about these Winter Olympics but he's too caught up in Garth Brooks mania to care.

Id love to know where the 30 odd billion pounds has gone, the most expensive olympics in history ffs id say at least half that is in the pockets of putin and his cronies

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭spank_inferno

Seeing a lot of the #sochiproblems on Twitter, I'd love to see what they spent $50billion on.

And also.... Seeing as gay people cannot interfere with children, I assume straight people can.

So they are not as advanced as our own political/business system then.

Although with the Games, the WC there in four years time, PLUS a planned F1 race either this year or next, Russia are really trying to sell them selfs.

This is more about politics, than sport, just a shame some of their political ideals are not in keeping with the rest of the western world that they are trying to sell them selves to.

Where did they have the figure skating and the snowboarding in Ancient Greece?

Opening ceremonies are so bizarre. Little or nothing to do with the actual sports

When the pool froze over in the winter silly!

Apparently the athletes accommodation and some of the hotels are in a terrible state. The IOC are fuming over it, very embarrassing for Russia.

They are never anything to do with sport, rather a celebration of the host countries culture.

Its not a patch on Londons so far, but then again, I could associate my slef with the themes of Londons.

    Edit.

    Gotta love their national anthem.

One has to assume they've spent some of the billions on building new prisons for people who failed at their bit of the Olympics.

The whole thing looks pretty disorganised, especially after Beijing and London.

Judging by his facial expressions, I'd say Putin is having the time of his life.

Was in the heats yesterday, semi finals tomorrow morning, however no one got eliminated before the opening ceremony, you either went straight to the finals, or to the semis to have two more chances.

Although one of the beeb commentators described him as 'A second rate American boarder looking for alternative citizenship', then retracting it after his second run in the heats.

Which is a bit rich seeing as a 1/4 of the GB team in 2012 were not British 5 years ago.

There was a mention of a persons eligabilty the other day, not sure it it applied to the summer or winter games, where if someone claiming citizenship, it was alright as long as they were not replacing someone else, who may have been inferior.

For a country so anti-gay, Russia is tremendously camp.

I wouldn't be surprised if caged shirtless lithe men descended from the stadium roof, grinding to the back-beats.

Are there even that many people in the stadium? There looks to be thousands of empty seats.

    It's pretty grim really

That's how Putin plans on getting down to the podium later.

At $1000 per ticket (according to BBC News) for the just the cheap seats, I'm not surprised. God knows what you'd pay for seats with a decent view.
