I just started with a personal trainer that I'm seeing once a week... And I'm going to the gym two other days a week myself using her programme... I had her for the first time early this week, and went today to the gym for the first time on my own... But I could barely get through it. I'm still in such pain from my first session with the trainer - couldn't do squats etc. because my leg muscles were killing me... grrr... Also the gym was so intimidating, and I feel like I can't do the sessions on my own without the trainer there... Any advice? Also, will this initial pain go away - is it important to work through it and do as much as I can...? Don't have that much weight to lose, just trying to lose it and gain muscle too... Doing all weight training basically with a strict high protein diet... Should I keep going and get through it or should I cut down to just one session a week with trainer and nothing else - or is that a bad decision? I have dumbbells at home, so was thinking of doing some training at home instead... Get really nervous at the gym for some reason - feel like the big weight guys are just judging me etc.... :/

If you are very sore and really don't feel up to a workout, then don't do the workout. Instead go for a swim and a walk/jog.
Recover, and get back at it in a couple of day. Just don't sit on your ass waiting to recover.
The pain is the worst at the start, it gets less as you get used to working your muscles (I miss it sometimes)

Don't feel intimidated in the gym, by the way. No one's watching you and everyone has to start somewhere. Enjoy your training :)

3 times a week is fine.
The pain gets less and less every time, agree with the poster above I miss it sometimes.

Believe me nobody there is looking or remotely cares what you are doing. It can be intimidating but it's all in your head.
