Having an argument with the other half.. is it more common to breathe and through your mouth or nose? One of us never breathes through their mouth and thinks the other ones a freak.. And one of us breathes through their nose and thinks the other is a stupid-head.

    So which do you do?

Nose, unless I happen to have a bad cold. Sure if you're breathing through your mouth you're going around with your mouth open all the time- and even if only a little bit, that's weird.

    Yep, nose.

It's why colds make us so miserable and make it so difficult to breath, because our noses get blocked.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Nose obviously. If you need extra oxygen (while exercising, for example) then you can top it up by breathing through your mouth. Or if the nose is blocked then the mouth can be used. But for every day usage, then you don't sit there with your mouth open breathing. You use your nose.

I'd say it's about 50/50 for me, broken nose years ago makes it difficult to breathe completely through it most of the time. I don't leave my mouth hanging open catching flies, my lips are just about parted (doing it right now to check :P), because I'm mainly just making up for the loss of some air through my nose, not taking massive breaths through my mouth alone.

My husband is the exact same, old broken nose, can't breathe through it properly. Yet he INSISTS on trying to, all.the.time. So at night when he's asleep or trying to get to sleep and about to pass out with the effort of breathing through his gammy nose I want to die trying to sleep beside him. Listening to someone trying to force air through a blocked nose constantly is soul destroying. Open your mouth ffs!!

Your nose is full of tiny hairs to strain out dust and smoke and pollen. Your mouth is not.

But you can breath faster through your mouth when your muscles need extra oxygen.

Normally you should be breathing through your nose

The term "Mouth breather" is derogatory.

The following other conditions are also associated with mouth breathing: cheilitis glandularis, Down syndrome, anterior open bite, tongue thrusting habit, cerebal palsy, Sleep apnea, Snoring.

    hahahaha....thanks for the laugh :)

Mouth breathers beware! Not only can you appear to be slack-jawed yokels but mouth-breathing builds up innumerable maladies, starting with the gums. Check out Buteyko breathing on Google is God, or how about this site... http://www.normalbreathing.com/index-nasal.php

But don't stress, just breathe less :D

I breathe through my nose, always. My teeth feel cold and my tongue gets dry when I breathe through my mouth.

The other half breathes through his mouth. He also stops breathing for long periods of time when he's asleep.

Then I take the pillow off his face.

For some reason, if you believe in anything right of centre, with regards to your political beliefs, you breath through your mouth also.

    Apparently.

I'm a mouth breather! Even though breathing through the nose is supposed to be the correct and natural way.
I have a lot of issues with my nose, and its constantly inflamed and blocked most of the year so I find it really hard to get enough air in through my nose!

    HowTo:Breathe

    Step 1: Detecting Your Organs

First of all, you should know where all your organs are. If you are a human, your lungs should be behind your ribcage and your diaphragm should be at the bottom of your ribcage. Your nose should be located above your mouth. If you have trouble locating these components, try consulting an expert.

Please make sure that your central nervous system is properly connected to your diaphragm muscle and that your brain is set up properly. If you do not know how to check this connection, please consult your owner's manual. If your owner's manual is lost, missing or temporarily misplaced, dial the help hotline. The help hotline was affixed to your umbilical cord at birth, much like the warning stickers on cords of household appliances.

Tip Do not give up yet!

After you succeed in detecting the necessary organs and ensuring their proper connection, you will be ready to proceed to the next step.
