Aldi have a few things that look interesting, Lidl is woeful, I think the fire extinguisher might be the only thing worth buying.

Hmm, I need a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

Does that stuff sell out fast? Want to buy a load of stuff, so don't know should I go before or after work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's like most stuff in Lidl/Aldi. The good stuff gets snapped up quickly while the rest ends up in the bargain bucket a week later.

Things like the bulbs, wipers, etc. tend to go quickly as they are snapped up by anyone who has a car. The charger, jack and compressor tend to be in less supply and normally sell out quickly.

Tempted by that compressor car charger tbh

I bought it over a year ago works really well and jump started a 3 liter diesel jeep with it.
The compressor is slow but does work.
    Lights are what they are

I thought I bought it much cheaper at 39 euro but I might have been mistaken

Anyone ever try the wipers from Aldi?

Only the flat blade ones which are excellent.
Not on sale this time though.

What do you think of the ones on sale here? Worth a try at 5.99?

Aldi best cars are sporting them these days. I find the aerosol sprays good - I usually stock up when they come around. Very good value.

The compressor is good alright. I got one about 3 years ago for about the €39 as well. They don't sell out that fast actually. The Aldi up the road from me had them for months last time.
    Bulb sets are good value.

Was there questions over the car trolley's quality last time ALDI was selling them? Don't really need a trolley, but they're so handy to have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Not sure if it is the same make but I got the trolley jack the last time they had them, have used it twice on my own car and have had no problems. Very handy to have at home and the one I have seems to be good quality to me.

Anybody know if dat jump starter pack would be able to jump a 1.8 diesel van?

If the battery is just run donw below the point of starting the van itself, then it would have no problem starting it, but if the battery had hardly any charge, probably not.

Whoops didn't see earlier post. Wud be handy to have in the van so.

    What would be more powerful?

That charger or a jump start from a small petrol car like a Yaris?

Are all wipers the same? Or is it worth paying a few euro more?

For the first time in my life, I'm on the lookout for some, and I'd like to get a decent set (the ones I currently have are just smearing the water around and aren't much good, so I'd like to get a good set that'll give me a clear view, etc.).

Wouldn't mind paying €6 for the ones in Aldi but I don't mind paying more for a set in, say, halfords, if they'll actually be a better product ("you get what you pay for" springs to mind)

yaris has a small battery and would need heavy quality leads to connect first and bring up revs to put some juice into van, most boost packs state what they can start on them.

good blades are bosch and they clean the screen, use a good quality screenwash to keep screen clear and at this time of year i use one with protection down to -16 nearly neat when freezing weather is here.

I remember jump starting my 3ltr Diesel Merc of the wifes 1ltr yaris, and it started, but the merc battery was just slightly flat. Left the yaris running for a few minutes with the leads connect to the merc battery, then got the wife out to rev the Yaris while I started the merc.

They usually advertise these with an amp rating, 400amp, 600amps etc etc
The one my mechanic has is 800amps and its a fairly big heavy duty one, I cant see any amp rating on this one, it probably will say it on the box.

Cheers. Will stick my head into Halfords over the weekend, so.

The problem with those battery packs is that on the rare occasion when you actually need it, the battery has run down too. So you end up with 2 flat batteries and a need for jump leads and another car. :)

I think I have Lidl wipers on one of my cars. Been fine so far. I have Bosch wipers on my other car and I can't notice the difference, even though I paid multiples of the Lidl cost for the Bosch ones.

Might pick up one of those windscreen cleaners from Aldi

(If I remember this thread next week that is.. I rarely do!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,347 ✭✭✭No Pants

I really want them to do some (motor)bike stuff again. The w5 chain cleaner spray is great for...cleaning my bike chain. :)

I used to be signed up to get the bargain emails for both stores, but at some point last year I stopped receiving them. Signing up again hasn't worked.

It's funny, my 1.8 daysul CMax was flat on several occasions and I hooked up the GF's MX5 to it.
I could have wired up a sausage for all the difference it made.
AA guy came along with a tiny, little jump start pack, "put it away, this just will not do" I said, but it started the car no problem whatsoever.
It wasn't a LIDL or ALDI starter pack though, that yoke cost hundreds.

The one thing I want is the jump start trolley they have at my local Ford garage, it runs of three phase 380V, with jumper cables an inch thick that actually start to smoke when they turn that thing on.
I never heard my car crank over this fast, it was twice as fast as on battery alone.
Mind you, if you change the fuel filter on a diesel Ford, you'll need it.

I had a car like that, but not a Ford, then found out on here that if I Jack the back of the car up after changing the filter it'll start first time. Wasted 2 days and 2 battery charges before I came here for the answer.

Older diesel cars (I had a 1984 W123 Merc 200D) used to have a pump, on the Merc I had to unscrew this plastic top which was a hand pump.
Still didn't stop it from stopping once a week and then taking days to be restarted. Those where the times when cars would just do that every now and then.

I wanted a trolley jack last time. But put it off. I just didn't want to put money in it for it to fail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭KwackerJack

    Anyone used the H4/H7 bulbs?

Aldi are 30% brighter while lidl say 50% brighter.

Brighter than what?? What's the standard lux for a 55w headlight bulb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭Zoney

Interested in the trolley jack myself, wouldn't use it often but want one for when I do, so the price is attractive. If it's rubbish I'd be less worried about the money wasted on it though, more concerned about the car!! Guessing it'd be fine for occasional use though? I've only the wee jack that comes with the car atm (fits into the spare).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

As I said earlier in this thread, I've had no issues using the trolley jack on my car. It's fine for having at home.

Ah cool. Thanks for sharing. Shopping on Thursday for me car :)

Don't need wiper blades but spares won't go astray.
Oh! Some bulbs too as a backup would be handy (I think).
Scratch Remover - might be too late, but sure for that price I'll try and see.
    Car Wipes?
    Boot Mat - possibly.
Thanks to my parents, I think I am set with everything else :)

    Thanks again,

In all honesty who needs a battery charger these days?

If your battery is flat more than once you either leave lights/electricals on regularly or you need a new battery.

    Full Stop (literally)

cars that are laid up for months i would suggest a solar trickle charger.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Solar-Battery-Charger-ideal-Caravans/dp/B000R0UBT8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391296607&sr=8-2&keywords=solar+battery+chargers

best to check first if fag lighter works when key removed or add a second one with a safety fuse to battery for extras .
underground car park would be of no use.

I got the hydraulic jack. Pretty happy with it. Instructions are fairly comprehensive - will have to remember not to lift objects that are radioactive...

Also picked up some dash wipes, and some of the cheap tyre spray stuff (will be at least be a step up from just hosing them off...!)
