I love this type of game and a recent highlight for me was Shadow Complex which was one of my favourite 360 games. Another recent game I really enjoyed was Guacamelee.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions/favourites of good games of this sort? New or old, any format. Metroid and Castlevania need not be listed :-)

Love this style myself, but only got into it recently. I'm still catching up in the Metroid and Castlevania titles. I have to say the the Castlevania games on DS are some of my favourites so far.

Is that the Batman game on 3DS that came out alongside Origins? I didn't realise it was in this style. That reminds me though, Spiderman: Web of Shadows on DS (not the big console versions of the game, because they're poo) is a surprisingly good little 2D brawler with a great combo system and a bit of a Metroidvania layout. Well worth playing.
