    from hkud

Free online learning course on the Microsoft Virtual Academy to learn the basics of Hyper-V on Windows 2012 R2 and also get a free Prometric test voucher to sit the exam 74-409. So you basically get an MCTS qualification for the cost of getting to the exam centre!

Vouchers expire and must be used by June 30th. Exams alone usually cost over £100, let alone the value of the training. As well as that, the MCTS qualification is well respected in the industry and Hyper-V is already starting to threaten VMware.

Not for everyone, but a free certification for tech types!

    http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/training-courses/server-virtualization-with-windows-server-hyper-v-and-system-center#?fbid=zU5S4WUZaNW

You need to register, confirm the email and get the voucher.

Just a quick tip for everyone registering first time with prometric. I couldn't register on the latest versions of chrome, firefox or IE10/11 (even in compatibility mode). I had to roll back to IE8 and it worked straight away.

I registered and booked in with prometric over the phone.

Just an fyi on the voucher as well....the FAQ states that having a voucher code doesn't guarantee you get the exam for free, you need to book the exam to ensure you get it free. Also Prometric only allows you to book within the next 3 months.

Our apologies but due to popular demand, we are currently out of vouchers. Please come back in 48 hours to request your voucher.
    bummer

When I tried to use my voucher (Friday) on the Prometric site it said it had already been used (it wasn't)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

"Due to popular demand, try again in 48 hours blah blah something you're too slow we hate you"

Pity! I'll defo try again though! :)

Vouchers are being issued again. Make sure you're quick and get one before MS run out of their allocation. Also if you do bag a voucher, reg with prometric asap so you can schedule the exam before the vouchers get used up.

In the FAQ it states that the voucher doesn't entitle you to an exam as the allocation may be used up etc.... Tick tock.

Hey crazyderk, thanks! Is that all you used?
Did you just do the test exam a few times, or did you do real "study" at all?

I've been using the training videos on MS Virtual Academy as per the OP's link. The 2 guys are both VMWare certified experts. Basically MS are trying to get VMware admins to transfer across their skillset. "You can do this with VMWare but Hyper-V can do so much more" ...ad nauseum.

Interestingly I noticed the Hyper-V role is bundled into Win 8 pro already but needs to be enabled from "Turn windows features on/off". There are limitations to what you can run vs the full bare metal hypervisor. Still though its very useful for tinkering about.

I started watching the videos and then when I realised how basic they were I gave up and used the dumps

Cheers for the link OP. Just signed up for it now.

For anyone having trouble with the "Get Free Voucher" link:

    - you need to have Adblock turned off for that page or nothing will happen (you get a javascript error)
    - even then, Chrome then blocked the popup window. You'll get an icon in the right of the address bar, click it and enable popups for the domain
    - click the 'Get Free Voucher' link again and it should work

    Tried Hyper-V before. Big mistake.
Tried to get help on-line, to no avail.
Ended up with doing a complete re-install on System.
Regretted not doing more research beforehand.
You need to have an MSc in Computer science focusing only on MicroSoft
    to stand any chance.

VM Ware and www.virtualbox.org(Free) are a heck of allot easier to use,
and won't leave you staring and a command-line and allot of reading up
on a separate machine running a different Operating System !

    Passed today cheers op

    I've pasased on Monday.
Now what do we do with this certificate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭charlie_says

Got the voucher just now, thanks to the OP. I wonder will I actually remember to do this?

What is the difficulty of the exam like for someone who only plays around with VMs (mostly in VirtualBox for have used VMWare a bit) testing and doesn't use them for production environment purposes?

To the guys who passed it today:
What did you study? Advice for what to focus on to study as little as possible to pass comfortably?

    I passed today.

Go to examcollection.com find the exam under Microsoft and download the "edge.97" dump, I found that the best.

45 questions were in the exam, for some reason I thought it was going to be 55.

Anyone else that has passed this exam, have you received your cert by email or has your MCP profile being updated yet? I still haven't received confirmation from Microsoft that I passed where usually I have the cert the afternoon that I passed.

I've had issues with prometric where I had two prometric ID's and thus ended up getting 2 MCP ID's

    might be that?

45 questions is nice actually, just studying one of the exam collection dumps today. I assume it was similarly laid out multi-choice screen?

Yes, but get to know the questions as well as the answer. They are not always in the same place. D on your dump may be A in the actual exam.

    Thanks.

I've noticed there is a "drag & drop" option when starting to open one of the dumps, and it's a bunch of different questions where you have to drag and drop answers into a table structure. Totally different to the multi-choice section. It was my understanding you only have the multiple choice questions in the actual exam?

Exams are exact same as the dumps, you will have drag and drops.

Ok, I assumed the exam was the same as previous ones I did - just multiple choice questions. I also thought there was only 45 questions total, and they all followed the typical format.

Is there a particular link for the full set of questions. I'm being limited to a trial of 5 :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

they're all full sets, you are probably limited by trial version of the software

Hi, just an fyi for you..

I had to reschedule my exam for personal reasons but there is a €24 reschedule fee. They did however allow me to put it on 'hold' (which has no charge) but I will have to pay the reschedule fee when I ring them back to book the new date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭MarkJD

My exam i scheduled for next Wednesday. Was gonna do a bit of training and pro metric dumps this weekend. How much prep did those that passed it do? If i just do the dumps over and over is it fairly handy?
