KC leaving Today FM

KC is to leave Today FM and return to Red FM in Cork. It will be a shame to see him go, it's a great show.

Doing it for family reasons, which is understandable. Commuting from Cork to Dublin must be a pain. Best of luck to him.

The inevitable question now though is who will replace him? Lenny as main presenter? Colm, Louise?

Any chance of Raymond Foley III returning home?

Would be great if he did... If his home was at the other side of the world.

He was the obvious choice to replace Foley when he left for 98, but don't know who the obvious choice to replace KC is. Don't think Louise Duffy is ready. Phil Cawley or one of the older jocks would be absolute torture and zero craic.

My number one choice would be a return for Ray Foley, but don't know if he'd want to go back to lunchtime even if he gets frustrated by 98 from time to time.

I'd like the mix up with Colm o Sullivan to get the spot and then someone else to take his evening slot, not sure who though, maybe brian and dara could come over from spin1038. They filled in a few shows before on today fm, maybe they were testing the water?

    Will miss KC.
    Best wishes to him!

Raymond Mark Anthony Foley the third is the outstanding candiditte IMO

    Bring back Foley!

I'd be staggered if it were to happen judging by his very funny comments regarding Ann and Shauna having to leave the nightimenetwork podcast this week.

Yeah the next ntn podcast should be good!

Damn! I love the show as it is. KC is great for lunchtime. Oh well, it's a perfectly understandable reason. Hopefully we get the return of the king now.

No loss in my opinion, ratings would also suggest the same! Hope he brings Lenny (?) with him.

I would also love to see Ray Foley back.

I' missed the very start of today's show. I know it means that I'll be able to listen on a radio. Whoever they choose to replace him, please Jesus and Christy ring don't let it be Phil Cawley.

Maybe RedFM made a tempting offer too.
The local stations in Dublin and Cork are in a very different money league to other locals due to their audience size.

I wish him the best of luck and sure you can always tune in online :D

Any word on what time slot he's going back to on red fm? The current red rooster crew are absolutely terrible, hopefully he goes back doing that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Saffjake

I cannot imagine for one second that 98FM would release Ray back to Today FM. All breakfast shows need 18 months to settle in, so, if he goes then they have the job of replacing and building all over again! This a perfect opportunity for Communicorp to have a look around at existing talent on radio at the moment rather than just slotting in someone on their schedule to fill a gap or go crazy and employ new talent! Something tell's me that's not going to happen...some PD's have their favourites and everything stays the same...that's my tuppence worth...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Missyelliot2

I love the Colm O'Sullivan show...but would hate him to move from the evening slot, as it's the only time I get to listen to the radio.

Yeah I was thinking that aswell. I've not listened to the rooster in a while to the point I didn't know that gemma had left and Michelle who was the newsreader is now part of the rooster crew.

I don't think he is going to do early mornings as wasn't that the reason he left redfm ? He wasn't a fan of the early starts ? Anyway it's KC that is leaving and not KC and Lenny and the rooster was KC AND Lenny. IMHO opinion anyway.

    Anthony ? Isn't it Nicholas ?

As for the KC thing I don't think that ray should or should leave 98fm as I think him, JP, Deeno and Phil have a good thing going as of now. Id wait for Iano to leave taking Paul Collins with him and Phil could be with ray and JP if that is the longterm plan. How does Deeno fit in then ?

Yea that's a fair point there, I was thinking that about the early mornings alright might not suit him and I'd say he'd had enough of it. The current breakfast show isn't a patch on it, very very drab and that jay fella is just shocking altogether.
You could see Lenny going back down south with him maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭lambayire

I would have thought that Ian Dempsey won't be hanging up his mic anytime soon.

I reckon Colm O'Sullivan might get the gig but I'm not sure he would be suited to the lunchtimes.

... oh, and the position of Programme Controller ;)

He is doing that. From the above link:
KC is taking the helm as Programme Controller at the radio station and also makes a welcome return to the hot seat on the breakfast show.

It was Lenny didn't like the early mornings not KC. Wonder if that'll be the only chance in red in April?

Whats the difference in PC too program director?

Sad to see KC leave as I've only just got the opportunity to listen to the show regularly (recently started an internship where it's on in the office). Would wish him every success though.

Hopefully this'll mark a turn around for Red FM. It's been on the decline (IMO) since he and Lenny left. It'd be great if Lenny returned with him as they were the best breakfast show hosts in the country when they were doing the Red Rooster together.

As for Today FM, I cannot see Foley returning. He's spoken numerous times about how one of the main reasons they left for 98 in the first place was that they were "terminally bored" doing that shift after so long. I also think I remember it being said that they got a 2 year contract with 98, they haven't even been there 18 months yet. Even if those barriers were gone, I personally think it'd be a mistake for them to go back right now. The format is really starting to click now and I reckon they should try and regain some of 98's lost audience.

I think Colm O'Sullivan would do a good job there, maybe just move the Mix-Up as is there. Then maybe move Paul McCloone back to 7-10 and bring back a Blast type show with Ann, Lenny (if he's not leaving), Shauna and a new host from outside.

Was KC not in a position to do the Today FM show from Cork?. Colm O'Sullivan did one there after Christmas (probably from the Newstalk studio).

They might try moving Louise Duffy to lunchtime

I havent listened to radio in so long. Are these guys any good or are they of the genre of a lot of the crap that was there a few years ago? You know multiple presenters laughing and acting the idiot trying to force manufactured humour on the listener.

Yeah, I think she works the desk on her early morning show, which is a plus as she can do it. But I think she has a good personally, she is likeable and not in your face and she will only be ready if given a chance but then again I wouldn't like any dj to get given a big chance and it going wrong.

I hope Today FM take this opportunity to mix up the afternoons a bit, Tony Fenton's show has become so tired and in need of a facelift.

I really enjoyed Alison Curtis when she did a few shows in the afternoon in place of Tony, i really wouldn't mind hearing more of her during the weekday.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

Alison Curtis could be a good name to take over that slot actually. Ive always enjoyed her shows and she plays some great music.

Really wouldn't like Ray Foley to move back - the breakfast show is so good ATM and I think it would be a step back for them.

Was KC not in a position to do the Today FM show from Cork?. Colm O'Sullivan did one there after Christmas (probably from the Newstalk studio).

Jonathan Healy uses that studio at lunchtime on Newstalk, so it wouldn't be available for Today FM to borrow.

Shame to see KC gone. It was an enjoyable show anytime I heard it (although I never liked it as much as Ray Foley's show in that slot).

2fm are about to launch a new schedule so it would probably be wise to wait until that's sorted before making schedule changes, Brian and Dara from Spin were mentioned earlier, I like them and think they work well on air together but I wonder if they would be too Dublin orientated for a national station. Today FM have a habit of getting decent presenters in, the show is a very basic format really. What annoys me is the national news thing they do, why not move that to 12 and start a show at half? I think Today FM are going to make some serious changes in the next few years, how long will Dempsey Darcy and Fenton keep going?

TBH I think Ian Dempsey has proven himself to be very affable. I don't hear Tony Fenton much, but that's because of the times I'm working. Ray Darcy isn't great when he tries to be controversial, he just comes across as aggressive. He would be ok with just Will, but the two cackling people in the background grate!
IMHO there is nobody as bad as Colm Hayes on 2fm - nobody! (Well, maybe Niall Boylan)

There's a shared Red/Communicorp studio in Opera Lane, but its a single studio and in use by Newstalk at the time.

It also looks like it might not be there for much longer: http://operalane.com/opera-lane-retail/

"At the moment Unit 6 is used as the Opera Lane Radio Studio and is shared for daily broadcasts by our media partners NEWSTALK AND RED FM radio stations. The Unit is available in a variety of layouts ranging from 22 sq metres up to 1,200 sq metres."

Funnily enough, that's where the show is today.

Id say anyone thinking there will be a massive shake up are sadly mistaken. Comemrcial radio has to follow certain formulas. KC follows it like everyone else. There are certain songs (popular chart songs) which need to be played each hour, or the casual listener will switch away to whichever station is playing the current flavour of the month.

Now, to be fair, KC has put his own slant on the show and plays some different music from the norm, and the show is not nearly as bang your head off the wall idiotic as Foleys show was, so maybe whoever comes in can continue in that vein.

Re Colm O Sullivan taking over - pretty certain he commutes from Cork as well. Plus he is 100% a music DJ. Not to mention, and I hate saying this as I have met the guy on numerous occasions socially, he does not quite have the charisma that the lunchtime slot requires. I would say he is perfectly happy in the slot he currently holds.

TBH, I'd day Phil Cawley will take over again for the short term while they explore their options. Maybe try and tempt Foley back once his contact is up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭Horse84

@gimmick good post I would agree. Colm O'Sullivan is good at what he does but no I don't think he's got what's needed in that slot. I heard him filling in for awhile on the rooster after kc left and he struggled with that I thought. Kc is returning to what is essentially Colm's old position at red with regard director of programming as far as I can see.

Personally I'd hate if phil Cawley got the nod there but he probably will. Alison Curts, I feel should be given a chance there but I dunno who u could put with her in that slot maybe Ann gleeson, certainly not Lenny I don't think.

Colm O Sullivan's show is so similar to KC's show that he would be a perfect fit for it.
