Whats with the name? Frankenstein was the creator, not the monster and the trailer indicates its about the monster. I will be unable to watch this if the fecked it up.

Well fans of the novel won't be disappointed anyways by the looks of that trailer.

    Very faithful. :D

Well I'm not entirely sure what I expected when I clicked on that trailer but, yikes; lighten the hell up would you, producers of Underworld? Would it hurt to inject a little levity into stories as inherently preposterous & over-earnest as this, or did they expend all their energies in making sure everything's OMG-SO-MOODY? :)

Looks like trash but entertaining trash. Will probably end up watching this.

No flick containing Eckhart could be construed as awesome. Probably the most insipid performer on the big screen over the past decade.

He was excellent in Erin Brockovich, Thank You For Smoking and The Dark Knight though. He has been in a few duds alright, The Core, one of the funniest (for the wrong reasons) film I've ever seen.

Looks boring. Not good enough to warrant the style (Casshern), not laughably bad enough to warrant the mood (Deadly Prey).

Totally forgot he was in The Core! First film came into my head was the absolutely woeful Battle: Los Angeles. As you said he can be very good but seems to be all over the place in his role picking.

Maybe Eckhart is a little like Brendan Fraser and just enjoys doing big budget genre films. There's a quite from Fraser about how he only does arty films to kill time between blockbusters.

I've always found Fraser's attitude refreshing. Far too many actors look down upon blockbusters and seem to think themselves better than others because they'd never dream of being in a film about an akin invasion. That said I do wish Fraser would do a few smaller films, he's given some excellent performances over the years and it seems that his career has taken one hell of a nosedive over the past year or so with all his recent efforts bypassing cinemas completely.

I think I'm the only person to actually like Battle: LA. Cheesy in parts yes but the action was top notch. Reminds me of my days back in the good old FCÁ sniff....

Good point. Obviously they weren't a strong enough counterbalance to prevent Eckhart from sinking the film into a hole in the ground.

    bollocks.

just seen that of the two cinemas i go to one isnt showing this at all (they prefered to put the bloody lance armstrong film on) and the other is only showing it in 3D in the night time. i.e 10pm.

looks like itll be pirate for me for this one.

    :(

You're upset that a doc which has received universal acclaim is playing instead of a film that has gotten some of the worst reviews of any film in years?

If you really want to see the film why pirate it? Why not wait till it's released and get the DVD or Blu?

yeah cause afte waiting months for the film i should now wait months for the DVD.

i couldnt give a toss what the reviewers say about this film. if i listened to them i'dve missed some of the most fun films ive seen and christ knows right now theres virtually NOTHING out there thats full on entertainment as the screens are stuffed with "worthy" oscar job

I dont buy DVDs or blu rays. i dont even rent em. i watch my films in the cinema and if they dont want to support this film why should i support them?

ive no problem with pirates. i listen to pirate radio, i watch pirated TV so whats bizarre about suporting pirate film providers when they give me the product the cinema coulnt be arsed with?

the local's had their chance to get my money from this and blew it.

That's a great attitude, my local cinema isn't going out of its way to appeal directly to my needs so I'll just steal the film. To say that supporting pirate film providers is something people should do is bizzare. You do realise that they're exactly the reason why the film is on 3D?

Have you bothered to go into the cinema and ask about a 2D screening or have you even bothered to check if the 10pm screening is just for the Wednesday and Thursday screenings?

    yes i have.

thanks for being so condecending . by the looks of things itll be gone in the one cinema showing it by next week so its 3D surrounded by drunks and miss my last bus home or nothing just like they did with dredd last year. (albeit dredd got some day shows and lasted longer)

i dont care what you think of my attitude to priaracy. i NEVER advocated peole should do it, i said I would do it as thats the postion im left in by my locals.

and 3d has feck all to do with piracy and everything to do with gouging more money out of people . IMO thats what killed the dredd films stone dead last time. (which by the way you could get in pirate in 2d no problem)

3D has a lot to go with piracy. The studios felt that it would make pirating that bit much more difficult and the inflated tax price didn't hurt either. The lack of 2D screenings of Dredd did hurt but do did the fact that it was an 18 rated a ruin film and people's unfamiliarity with the source material.

I wasn't being condescending or a dick but there is nothing that justifies piracy. I Frankenstein looks like crap, entertaining enough crap no doubt and ill be seeing it next week as a friend worked on it. You imply that cinema goers are drunk, now I go to the cinema on all days and at all times and rarely have I seen a drunk person there. And anytime I did see a few cause trouble a few "shut the fcuk ups" sorted it.

Why don't you talk to your local cinema and see why they scheduled it for once s day. I was annoyed that my closest cinema isn't showing Inside Llewyn Davis so I let them know. I told them when I was getting a ticket to American Hustle last night that they'd I was going to the other cinema in town to see it and they could lose a loyal customer as a result. I could just as easily say screw it, my local cinema isn't appealing directly to my needs do ill download the leaked DVD but I'll make the effort to see the film and if there was no other cinema showing it I would wait to see it on Blu-Ray or VOD. I certainly wouldn't cheapen the experience by watching a crap cam of it or inferior DVD

I wasn't ever contemplating going near this film, on the basis that it looks dreadful, but at least it gave Donald Clarke an excuse to have some fun. My favourite bit is

I had wanted to see The Armstrong Lie this evening, but my local cinema are only doing afternoon screenings of it and as I was in the mood for a film and had seen all else that is playing I opted to see I, Frankenstein.

I, Frankenstein is the bastard offspring of the Underworld series, which considering that it was also created by Kevin Grevioux, upon whose comic this is based, makes you wonder if this began life as an Underworld film. Replacing vampires and werewolves in an centuries long battle are gargoyles and demons who are so similiar to the creatures of the previous franchise that the whole thing feels like a cheap knock off churned out by The Asylum.

Stuart Beattie is best know for his work scripting some of the most successful action franchises of all time and I, Frankenstein marks only his second time behind the camera. His first, Tomorrow, When the War Began was one of the better recent action films which made great use of all the tropes of the genre. Beattie captured the frantic action of the film in some of the more impressive slow motion we've seen and as such the material here is ripe for his directional flourishes. Visually I, Frankenstein is a treat for the eyes and contains a number of inspired shots which demonstrate just what a visual eye Beattie possess. Married to the sumptuous visuals is some of the best 3D we've yet seen. The film is layered in a manner which utilizes 3D to perfection and the depth on display is stunning.

Sadly the beautiful visuals on display only emphasizes just how poor the rest of the film is. There's not one fully formed character here, with Frankenstein's monster (named Adam as he was in the original novel) being little more than a rehash of Scott Speedman's character in the Underworld franchise. In fact, so familiar is each character that one would be forgiven for assuming that Bill Nighy was simply reprising his role from the original Underworld. The rest of the cast are equally as forgettable with Jai Courtney turning up and acting menacing, Miranda Otto looking positively bored and Yvonne Strahovsky looking pretty. There's not a whole lot for any of them to sink their teeth into and you get the impression that they could all do this in their sleep.

I, Frankenstein feels like a much longer film that's been cut down drastically in order to meet some studio memo. There's a lot of story here but the whole thing thunders along at such speed that there's no breathing room allowed. We jump from one set piece to the next with little regard for plot or logic. You spend most of the film questioning what's occurring on screen and repeatedly asking yourself how is it that in a modern metropolitan city there's not a single human passerby who witnesses the huge battles occurring between flying gargoyles and demons dressed by Agent Smith/

Look, I, Frankenstein is not a good film but it's certainly not as bad as some are letting on. Yes the entire thing feels like a hodgepodge of a dozen other films but the whole thing is so gorgeous to look at that you can sit back and turn your brain off. Beattie is a damn fine visualist and he can tell as story when he wants to, sadly I, Frankenstein isn't as concerned with telling a story as it is setting up a framework from which to hang the next set piece.

Ah man this looks like one giant smelly turd of a film.
Saw the trailer and the cgi looks like it's from the cutscenes off a Playstation one game.
