Boards.ie - Fails

One I've seen is occasionally someone will post in the "LETS ALL LAUGH AT PEOPLE WITH DEPRESSION" thread explaining why it's wrong to laugh at people with depression.

What are some massive fails you've seen on boards?

They probably need to rename it, right enough.

I know someone who suffers from depression and the name of that thread made me seriously angry at times. Even now that I know it's a joke rather than a troll I think it is one of the most idiotic and most offputting things someone trying to help could do.

I had thought it was to grab attention? I don't see how anyone could find it offensive at all tbh.

The guy that got caught speeding 4 times in a year and was asking how to get out of loosing his licence because 'the man' doesn't always get things right and we need to stop being sheep and following 'the man'.

Can people please stop mentioning this? everytime someone mentions it people go searching for it, bump it back up and once again we are plunged into the whole do we leave it up and let people decide if they want to watch it or do we remove it and assume its for their own good.

If people want to find it they will but there are those who don't but have their attention drawn to it for whatever morbid facination, queue complaints that we don't do enough to protect people and "what if kids see it" etc etc

If you had actually read it you would have seen very quickly what it was about. It's specifically there to get attention. I'm fairly sure if it had been titled "depression support thread" it would have fallen off the front page quickly and never to be seen again. Instead, it is one of the most useful threads on this website for those suffering from depression and also for those who are supporting someone suffering from depression. It was written by DeVore, the founder of boards who has long suffered, and spoken out for depression.

If you thought it was a troll and it made you that angry, I'm surprised you didn't go into it, at least in an attempt to report the troll.

Not quite sure how the "Lets All Laugh...." is a "Fail" thread. It has 335,838 views, 4,775 replies and has helped people with depression to talk openly about their situations and not feel it's all taboo. While there's the odd idiotic AH comment thrown into the mix, in general I think it's a very informative thread.

If you want fails, go to the Prison forum and read some of the excuses people give when their banned.

Pretty sure they were referring to the people who post in that thread arguing against the title without reading the OP.

The poster that wandered into a thread to berate Links for making fun of transgendered persons.

As knee-jerk outrage goes, it was a pretty spectacular fail! :pac:

Or in a more recent thread, the poster who told an escort they knew nothing about prostitution... :D

The posters who jump to ill informed conclusions really, there's a few of those about! :p

    Run_to_da_Hills' Prison Thread

    Day before new Pope elected:
I will be 100% correct on my predictions for Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone getting in as next Pope today. :)

Less than half an hour after being proved wrong:
    Request to close my account

As much as I liked RTDH, that was f*cking hilarious.

Ohh this was waaay way back Links, I did try doing a search, but I think you made a sarcastic comment about something and she picked you up wrong, went on a bit of a this, that and the other. She did apologise in a subsequent post though having felt a bit foolish I guess when she realised her mistake.

he was but when you are banned you can still post in prison. Allows people to appeal the process etc. Requesting to close his account though dunno what the story is there seeing he could do that in his control panel (unless that is blocked too)

EdenHazard talking about women and looks etc. I like him but God he's in his own world. Or when he put his pic in the Know your Lookalikes thread - comedy gold :D

DeV's "Lets All Laugh At People With Depression" thread title was supposed to be seen as ironic and to get attention - and it worked, it turned into one of the best outlets and support threads for a condition that affects so many people.

There's been soo many. One I remembered earlier is that there was someone that was trolling boards, posting some pretty damned hateful stuff and, I believe, death threats (though this might be wrong?) This was in the days before Data Protection is as it is now and through the user's IP address, they found where the guy logged on (just as it happens, they were using their school's network) and who they were as well. It was probably the best example of anyone being "owned" as I've ever seen on this site.

Every thread in the Motors forum where someone puts up video from a dash-cam in order to rant about someone else's driving where it turns out that their own driving was far worse than anything the other driver did.

    Fecking hell!

And those threads started on the Newbies & FAQ forum about specialised stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with Boards, e.g. a query about cars, or golf.
I wonder is it a case of them thinking: "I have a question to ask about a specific thing - I'll google FAQ and that'll be enough; it'll automatically be a FAQ in relation to my particular topic of interest."
