Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol. Obama

    Well lookie here........

Obama has come out and said it......
In an interview with the New Yorker's David Remnick published Sunday, Obama said while he believes marijuana is "not very healthy," the drug isn't as harmful as some insist.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol," Obama told Remnick.

When asked if he believes marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, Obama said it is less damaging "in terms of its impact on the individual consumer."

"We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing," he said.

In August, the Obama administration announced it would not stop Washington and Colorado from legalizing recreational marijuana use, marking a major step away from the administration's war on drugs.

“It's important for it to go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished," he said.

"We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing," he said.

Won't be long now folks, as America has sneezed.

Typical Obama, anything to keep his popularity up. He's just hopping on the bandwagon now.

Why didn't he say this years ago and save a lot of money that was wasted on the war on drugs? The prisons been overflowed?

That's fine. You don't understand them.

There are plenty of things we all don't understand.

Alcohol in moderation, yes. But I doubt that's what he was talking about.

What Obama says now will have little relevance when the next president will most likely be a republican.

Him saying it doesn't make any difference in that laws, does it? He's also not - like pretty much all US national politicians - going to lead the charge on decriminalising pot. For all the obvious reasons.

He also has to deal with the fact that a huge chunk of America - including religious leaders and police - don't think that decriminalisation is a great idea.

That's hardly true. The next President will - for many many reasons - mostly likely be a Dem.

The head of the federal government, leader of the biggest party in the US doesn't make a difference?

Almost every Democrat in the House and Senate will be asked whether they agree with Obama or not....

He is this close to being a lame duck and he knows it.

Now if Hillary Clinton said it... That would be news.

Why not tax it like cigarettes, but regulate it like alcohol? No driving, use during work etc etc..... Surely that could work

I don't know if that was meant to be poking fun at the stereotype that all stoners find everything funny but I dunno, I haven't found that to be true in any cases.
Mellow, perhaps. Finding everything humorous? Nah.

I'm still on the fence about cannabis being legalised in Ireland. I am in favour of being freely able to smoke it. But I feel that if it was legalised, the government would slap so much tax on it that you wished it was still illegal.

It's sooooo boring. People who do drugs are selfish, I include drink. There's nothing funny or interesting when you're talking absolute crap.
By the way I drink and have smoked so I include myself in this. Boring, it makes me feel better but I'm sure others don't find my sh1te amusing.

As long as sale and distribution is taken out of the hands of the people that profit of it now I'll be happy.

So something that people want legalised is less harmful than something that most likely wouldn't be legalised if it was only introduced now.

Maybe it's just an admission that alcohol never should have been legalised as a warning about the dangers of legalising cannabis ? :-)

Oh good god. Maybe it's because the effects of it are enjoyable?
Is altering your personality the only reason for doing something like that? Well I guess if you're quite a boring person you might be of that opinion..

•Many of the carcinogens and co-carcinogens present in tobacco smoke are also present in smoke from marijuana.

•Marijuana smoking does cause inflammation and cell damage, and it has been associated with pre-cancerous changes in lung tissue.

•Marijuana has been shown to cause immune system dysfunction, possibly predisposing individuals to cancer.

Cannabis smoke contains many of the same cancer causing substances (carcinogens) as tobacco - at least 50 of them. In addition, cannabis is often mixed with tobacco when smoked.

One of these carcinogens is benzyprene. Benzyprene is in the tar of both tobacco and cannabis cigarettes. We know that benzyprene causes cancer. It alters a gene called p53, which is a tumour suppressor gene. We know that 3 out of 4 lung cancers (75%) occur in people who have faulty p53 genes. The p53 gene is also linked to many other cancers.

Cannabis also contains a substance called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It is the THC in the cannabis that changes your mood and behaviour. The amount of THC in a cannabis cigarette varies considerably. Researchers have shown that THC causes benzpyrene to promote the p53 gene to change.

thing is, if weed were legalised in ireland, the government would fook it up somehow. at the moment I can get high grade ganja at the drop of a hat with little or no danger.
