These photowalks are for any and everyone interested in a walkabout taking photos. Any I have been on in the past have been very enjoyable and very friendly.

Depending on the location, I may be able to join up once I get out of my lectures.

I'm on for this. Location wise how about around the liffey area? O'Connell st down to the Convention Centre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,182 ✭✭✭Tiriel

I'm interested too - keep meaning to get out more for some night time shoots.

Don't like the idea of O'Connell street though.. think it'd be nicer to head for Grafton Street area, the docklands, or even just key buildings along the Liffey - a Liffey crawl!

I would love to join you. Can I bring along a +1? :)

I have never done one before, so my initial and probably over used suggestion would be the docklands.

What kind of gear do people normally bring? I don't have a whole lot, but just wondering what shots people are going for.

Tripod and a remote release are probably the two most important bits of kit. You can get away without the remote by using the timer function in the camera but a tripod is essential if you are going to be taking long exposures.

On the other hand an off camera flash could net you some interesting street portraits. :)

Ha cool, I just purchased a shutter remote on Sunday for an event at work yesterday :)

I will have to check if my Nikon speedlight works with the switch though, probably not.

Looks like I am good to go :)

Have you got commander mode on your Nikon camera, if so then your Nikon speedlight will work remotely regardless whether you use a shutter remote or not. You will have to set up the camera and speedlight for wireless operation.
Which speedlight and camera model have you?

What time would we need to meet up at? (light-wise?) Looks like sunset is 4.58pm

Just checked the moon data too and it's going to be very early phase - only 17.7% illuminated, so not a lot of moonlight!

    Here :)

Have never taken any moon shots, so that sounds good. Trying to get a remote release shutter at the moment, so if anyone knows anyone that has one for a 5D they no longer need.. send them my way ;)

There are a few on adverts here: http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/q_shutter+release/ and plenty on ebay.
I'll be using my 2/10 second timer for now. I'd like to get one of the digital ones thought for more creative stuff

Any update on time, meeting location and route? I'll make a suggestion of meeting on O'Connell Bridge at 7.30pm and work our way down towards the convention centre. Just my 2c though, I'll go wherever the crowd wants to go! I work in town so probably wont go home, so might be in even earlier..

Oh also, has anyone done the steel-wool thing before? I'd love to try it. Possibly a bit of light painting too?

I'll probably hop on a luas at about 5.30pm and head in - nice to have some light in the sky if we can!

For steel wool we'd need a less public space.. not sure where!

I can probably get in for 5.30, maybe get the last bit of the blue hour!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭kenwood

    Hi Folks

Great to see a bit of enthusism about for the Walk.

Time: 7.30 suits me as I will be coming from Cork. If others want to start earlier thats no problem, we can meet up along the way.

    Everybody and anybody is welcome.

    A Liffey crawl sounds good,

Grafton St. area - not too sure what is there to shoot at night - won't rule it out,

Steel Wool; great idea. quieter location needed - think was done some while past on the coast area……

O' Connell Street: Traffic at night is cool…… Could be taken in on Liffey Crawl.

Christchurch / St. Patrick's, Temple Bar, Central Bank area ……………………….

For the wire wool Rush Library Camera Group used the beach the first few times and then it was locate a derelict building, we used Baldungan castle an old ruin. Its a great crack and a good learning curve. I would suggest Dollymount beach to get started. Then find a derelict building that is safe to go into. You can also use little coloured lights that you can pick up in €uro shops and just add the piece of string.

A ruin can also be great for some light painting and some portraits if you have someone who can apply a bit of make-up, ghostly type

Using an old ruin was excellent as the sparks came back off the walls and some dramatic effects. One of our group also brought a fire extinguisher, just in case!! Wear old clothes as the wool will make any decent jackets

One of our last walks was in Skerries and we actually went up to Baldungan afterwards - it was great :)

XC Weather is for very windy in Dublin, (43 MPH). Will keep an eye on that. Tripod mightn't withstand a gust !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,182 ✭✭✭Tiriel

Weather isn't looking too promising - I guess we just hope for the best and call it tomorrow when we have a better idea what it will be like! Batteries charged :-)

    Hey all,

What's the plan for tonight? Is it still on? Weather looks ok, although it's early days yet :)

I will be able to make it in for about 8. I hope that's not too late. what is the course route and how long will you all be out for?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,781 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Unfortunately I cannot make it, forecast is for rain anyway. Definitely should get another arranged soon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭kenwood

Forecast is poor, rain and wind and the temp will be colder with the wind. Thinking it might not be too enjoyable tonight.
will we wait until the weather gets milder...............?

I'm afraid I'm going to bow out also, but definitely will be posting up another similar walk very soon as I was really looking forward to it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 500 ✭✭✭kevc2

I'll call it last minute, that's if anyone is heading out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,639 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

If anyone is heading in I'll be at the memorial sculpture of Matt Talbot (corner of Talbot Bridge and City Quay, opposite the Custom House) on the south bank for 8. I'll just be wandering downriver from there with perhaps a small detour into Windmill Lane to see if there is any graffiti worth shooting.

    Very good,

I will get the Dart into Tara Street for that time so, depending on the weather. If it's too miserable (very wet) I will give it a miss.

    I will be on the lookout for the following;

It's too wet and cold for me so I'm also going to bow out. Sorry. :-(

Looking at the rainfall radar, it looks like more showers so I'm out also. If the weather is better in a couple of days I'd be up for it again.

Weather looks fine now. A bit windy but bearable. I'll b in at 8 :)
