Its a 6 year old car. They weren't overly expensive in the first place.

I considered a 1.6 coupe for a long time when I started driving. Lovely cars.
They're cheap because it's basically a 2 seater. Not many people are after them. Plus, as said, they were quite cheap as a new car in the first place.
Shop around though. I've seen newer Coupes go for around that much. I was looking at a 05 coupe with a brand new NCT for €3,500 (dealer) - And probably would have got a bit off that.

They used to be very popular at one time but I'd say a lot of their typical buyers moved on to the likes of a MINI or Fiat 500. That model Coupe is now 12 years old and feels it. This probably explains their cheap prices these days.

    Thanks guys

Im looking around for a daily driver and since I have no kids and 2 westies this car would suit

I will keep an eye out

I currently own a Hyundai Coupe :pac:

It's 13 years old(hand down from a family member). It's mechanically perfect, drives lovely and nippy enough. Not exactly practical though.

Had it two years and other then servicing not needed to spend a penny on it.

Good car if you don't mind being mistaken for a hair dresser :o

Great car. Handles very well. The 1.6 engine is tad weak. If your looking for performance get a bigger engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

They look nice and are a relatively straightforward car but there are better options out there.
I'd prefer a slightly older Celica myself, far better engines and more reliable. I'd guess it would be easier on petrol too but not too sure. An MX5 would be even better again if it would suit.

That being said there are a huge amount of Hyundai Coupes out there so there is value to be had and there is not much wrong with them.

Usually that'd be the case, but the only decent engine is the 2.7 and even that's not fast. The 2.0 is only barely faster than the 1.6 and if you're prepared to tax/insure a 2.0 coupe then there are so many better options.

The coupes main attraction is the small engine.

Dont own one but worked with a guy who owned 3 of them. Said they never let him down and where good value.

Grab a few test drives and if you like the car then why not buy and enjoy.

I need a five seater so it's not practical for me but if your content it mach your needs you could do a lot worse. Cheap reliable sporty looking ticks quite a few boxes no all boxes but no car does.

    Good luck in your search

They are well built at least what I have seen when I have pulled the doors apart to fit a window regulator and other bits and pieces.
The engineering reminds me a bit of mid-90s Toyota builds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Usually the window regs are as a result of owners closing the doors with the glass rather than the door itself

Just for this thread we still have the first Coupe we got a few years ago, 1997 Green one, been parked up in the yard for ages now.

Started first turn of the key and she drove just fine.

    Bombproof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The 97 was a great looking car. it went pearshaped on the facelift, but it came good again in 02

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Parked side by side I prefer the 97 car we have to the 01 one in looks for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I've never seen that many individual front lights on a production car (10)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

My brother in law bought two of them new. A 03 and a 05. Sold the 05 with 160kms on it and never had any bother.

They facelifted them in 05 so make sure to get at least that.

Two points, you will fit four but they're uncomfortable in the back.

They're very slow and pigs on fuel.

Herself has a 06. The last before the new model. With the big whales :pac:

A full set of ebc pads is only around 60 euro. Makes the brakes awesome. Feels like your face is being pulled off.

I sat in one a number of years ago and found it very tight on headroom and I'm only 5' 10".

There's a knack to the seating position. I'm 5"10 as well and had a good few inches of headroom once I got the position right.
I was only sat in it for a few minutes. The dealer in question ignored me, so I walked.

6'1 and no headroom issues whatsoever.

They got a small facelift in 2005 - clear indicator lenses in the headlight, same on the rear and half leather seats. Small enough changes but made a big difference to the appearance.

Major facelift came in 2007 where it gained a redesigned front/rear end and larger wheels. Co2 based motor tax pretty much killed sales and they were only replaced by the Veloster 2 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

That Veloster is an insult to where Hyundai have gotten themselves.

From what I've heard, there's plenty of room for the scissors, hair dryers and all accesorries in the back :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Can't believe that took 11 hours.

There prefect for chauffeuring midgets around.

Old model is nicer then the 07 change IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

They are cheap because they are slow cramped no rear seats/boot to speak of and relatively heavy.

I've sat in the back of one with another person for a 40 odd miles journey. Not comfortable but do able.

Are they heavy? They dont feel it

Jeez, they literally gave it a facelift... a really bad facelift.

Relatively they are, 1300kg or so which means a 2000 1.4 VVTI corrolla has a much better power to weight ratio to put it in perspective.

Wiki puts it at 1233kg. Compared to a integra at 1170 its not far off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

    An Integra has power however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭Mister Man

OP has said he's not really after performance, rather something he likes to get from A to B.
I've given a few a quick test drive when I was considering one. They're quite nice. If you can live with the size, I'd say take the jump.

To be fair an integra (even in sohc format) would run rings around a Hyundai coupe.

Those Hyundai coupes aren't a bad car but there is a cheapness to their build quality and IMO the 1.6 engine isn't that refined in them.

I agree with ya. I just dont think the weight is the issue. Fair enough it could loose a few kg but its in the ballpark. Its the engine thats the issue.

Going by Parkers, the 1.6 A3, Focus and Coupe all have a 0-60 time of 11.5.

The 1.6 Golf is ahead with 10.5 but I really think the argument is null and void.

I'm assuming the OP's budget is between the 5-6k range, given the example they posted. Being honest, for that kind of money there are way better options out there (MR2/MX5/MK1 TT). If 4 seats are essential I'd consider Saab 93 Conv, 3 series coupe or if insurance/tax isn't much of an issue an RX8(which are going for peanuts at the moment).

My brother in law is selling this one http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/hyundai-coupe/6182912 The car is perfect and I am sure he is open any reasonable offer.

An the op doesn't want a performance car. Just likes coupes and there cheap enough

Absolutely, however if you can take the hit with insurance/tax/juice, it's a lot of car for small money. I just threw it out there as an alternative(among other, probably more viable options for the OP).

Hi All and thank you for a lot of reply's and suggestions as im taking them all into account .

the Jest of it is that im looking for a nice coupe which will be technically sound and not much maintenance

Due to the fact Im using it as a daily driver on mostly back roads and a few km on the N7 im not really looking for a Performance car. Also 90% of the time it will be only me in the car as we have a second car for me and the missus.

Also no Kids so the backseat space will only hold my 2 westies

Try get full leather or a seat covers, those half leather seats have a mesh centre and would be horrible with dogs!
