Just watched the ad there for 4G, "10 x faster than what you're currently used to" (or something like that )

Anyone on 4G yet that was previously on 3G?

If so, how does it really compare

What, if any improvements has it made to your 'everyday life'?

    Could Mods add a poll?

    4G?

This is Ireland, I had to wait for the mother to get off the phone so I could have the cable for dial up.

    3G barely works.

With Three so not rolled out yet. My phone is 4G ready though.

To be honest, I generally get enough speed at 3G to stream and surf easily enough on my Luas commute every day and use WIFI at home so unless they give me 4G for no extra cost, I'm not really arsed.

I dont have 4G on my phone but I do have it on my ipad with Vodafone. In comparison to 3G it really is much faster, I dont even bother going onto WiFi with it.

When I do speed tests I get speeds around 20-30mbps - which is faster than most home broadband speeds.

But I do live in South Dublin, so I would expect that the service is better than in other areas so it would really differ depending on where youll be using it. But at home and in Dublin City its great.

I have it with Meteor. In Dublin city centre I get download speeds of about 27mbps which is pretty damn good.

No idea in the world what I need it for on my phone, but sure why not!

I'm with Three so I'm lucky if I get 3G. Leaving them at the end of the month though :D

The Vodafone 4G coverage map shows that it is available in my area so naturally it is in fact, not.

In Carlow I got 16 Mbs up/down with speed test.

Why did they cover the south of the country with 4G first what about us poor folk in Connaght.

Thats an issue with the phone you buy, not the networks 4G service though. There is nothing vodafone can do about battery life.

    I know.

Actually it's a mixture of the devices hardware, the battery, the network and the OS.

Smartphones on 3G don't have have very good battery life (a day max in most cases) even with 2300mHa batteries.

So these current phones on 4G will give you even less battery power...which is why I'm not bothered with 4G for now.

I'd get decent enough life from my Note 3 but at the end of the day people want increasingly powerful and thin phones but that currently means smaller batteries.

Honestly miffed at this (continuous) complaint tbh.

Been with 3 since 09, had iphone/sgs1/sgs2 and now on a galaxy note3. Never had a problem with 3G tbh.

I live in the shticks, but my job covers the 32 counties (often in rural areas) and I almost always have great reception and constant 3G/H+ coverage.

Little hint. If you're an android user, make sure you have wdsma only enabled in network settings.

Let me know how you get on if you've changed to that setting. ;)

I'm in a terrible area for mobile internet coverage. Takes about 3-4 minutes to load a 5 minute porn youtube video. This in nearly central Dublin. Memories of dialup.

I was given 4G for free but 4G is wasted on me.

30 quid a month, and it's at least 4 times faster than my DSL broadband?

    yeah......stupid

We know it's Ireland, not because you dialed up using a cable, but because you waited for Mammy to get off the phone.

There's a 1gb cap on the 30 quid meteor plan. Yes that is stupid.
The €60 plan is for 6gb which is still ridiculous

I have 4G with vodafone, and find it a huge improvement.
I live in the middle of the country, maximum broadband speed I can get is 3Mb, which means i typically get 2 - 2.5Mb.
On my phone, with 4G, I typically get 20 - 30MB, and have measured it at just above 60 Mb. So now I couldn't do without it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭liliq

    So eh...
How do I know if I'm on it?

When you are using data on your mobile, there should be a symbol on your phone's screen staying that you are connecting. Non 4G symbols include G , 3G and H. When my phone is connected to 4G it says 4G instead of my normal H or 3g. This symbol should be beside your phones reception status bar.

Totally satisfied with my 3g service and smartphone. Won't be upgrading for yonks which is odd for me as I'm a tech nut.

Is the 4g service available as a dongle internet service as well? Now that's a different story if it is I'd defiantly go for it cost permitting.

    You're welcome.

I'm still amazed that 3's own customer service never seem to dispense this simple advice.

It simply means that your phone should always hang on to a 3G/H+ signal as opposed to latching onto Vodafone 2G when in certain areas.

My last speed test came back at 28mbps down and 3 up. That was in Limerick City a few weeks back.

That should solve 99% of people's problems that are losing 3G reception on 3.

Unsure if iPhone users get that option to use WCDMA only in their network settings, but it will solve problems for Android users..

Takes all of 1min to sort the problem.

It's been a curse lately.Three don't want to suggest it presumably for some reason?
