Just to let you know that Laois CTC's early season sportive will be held on February 9th. This year, we're running it in aid of the Men's Sheds charity (details at http://www.menssheds.ie).

There are two routes: a 100km with a few hills (http://bit.ly/1hvBAJr) and a flat 60km (http://bit.ly/K1tzO5). Both events leave from Portlaoise Equestrian Centre (Map: http://goo.gl/maps/6wXri) at 10am, with registration open from 8:45am. There are food stops on both routes, and a hot meal when you get back to the finish. We're also going to run a paced group (between 25km/h and 28km/h average) for the long route, which cyclists can join if they wish.

More details and online entry at http://www.laoiscycling.com/pwc_index.php. It's €20 for online entries and €25 on the day for CI licence holders.

Any questions, please let me know.

How's the parking situation? Going to drive over to this, first group ride of the season for me.

If you have signed up with a club for training spins etc, does that count as have a CI licence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

Your club should answer that for you but club membership normally necessitates CI membership also.

There's loads of free parking at the equestrian centre. There'll be no problem getting your car in.

You'll have a licence number if you have a CI licence. I'd check with your club, because you'll need the licence number, either to sign up online or else to register on the day. You can buy a one day leisure licence as well, but if you're going to do a few sportives during the year, you're better off with the licence (which also gives you a certain level of insurance for the year).

I see the start from the Equestrian Centre is different this year to the rugby club last year.
Are showers available after this years spin?

I really enjoyed this spin last year.
Good food, nice route, lovely weather for that time of the year, friendly club and the hot showers in the rugby club afterwards were a godsend.
Especially for one of the lads who was the only one left in the showers when the womens rugby team came in for their showers.

    Hi Rua,

Unfortunately no showers this year - it's very hard to get a free Sunday at the Rugby club, though we didn't think of the advantages of sharing the showers afterwards! On the plus side, the equestrian centre has a good stove in it, so the room for the food should be a lot warmer than the rugby club was last year.

On the long route.....Will the 25-28kmh limit be for all participants, or by 'also' did you mean that there will one group controlled at that speed but others can go faster if they wanted? ;-)
    Thanks,
    Andy

Sorry, should have made that clearer. There's an optional paced group, so if that pace suits you, then you're very welcome to join it. If you want to go faster (or slower), then that's fine too. We found before last year's event that some people were worried that the pace would be very high and that they'd be on their own, so that's why we're providing the group.

Nice one, think I'll bring along my copy of rough ride. Is there going to be any kind of talk with Paul Kimmage or just meet and greet?

Well a chance to ride with one of the legends of Irishcycling and indeed Irish journalism is a change not to be missed.
I'll do my level best to be there.....

All things being equal I'll be there, great cycling country from Castlecomer back up to Stradbally.

No official talk but he'll be available for signings after the spin, and he says he'll ride the 100km route.

I'm always sceptical about long range forecasts, but Sunday currently doesn't look too bad. From www.met.ie: "The showers on Sunday will be mostly confined to the western half of the country and the eastern side of Ireland will be much drier and brighter". Hope they're right.

Just signed up. Don't mind the rain as long as that wind doesn't decide to spoil the day.

It can't be any worse than the last time you were down for Laochra na Laoise!

Anyone going from Dublin? I'd be happy to share petrol costs?

Christ that was some day all right. The second half was lovely though.
Looking forward to it, no matter what the weather dishes up.

Don't have a CI licence. Don't want to book early in case weather is too bad. Can I just show up and pay on the day?

    Yes, no problem whatsoever.

The sportive is €25 on the day and without a licence we have to charge an additional €5 for insurance.

Alrigt if I've prebooked and need the insurance on the day? I'm still waiting for my CI license a month later...

That's no problem. If you've paid for your CI licence but haven't received it yet, you should have an email with the number and that's all we'll need. It will be something like 14LM0123 if you're a leisure cyclist.

Hard to say. Saturday is going to be horrible, but I think Sunday might not be too bad. www.met.ie are giving "A possibility of cool, blustery weather with showery rain", and http://www.accuweather.com/en/ie/port-laoise/210189/daily-weather-forecast/210189?day=5 are giving "Sunny periods with a shower". Could be a lot worse!

Just a reminder that online registration closes at 7pm this evening. You can still register on the day, but it will cost you €5 more. Online registrations are at http://www.laoiscycling.com/pwc_index.php.

For anyone who has registered online, you will still need to sign in on the day, but we'll have a separate table for you. Sign in and registration will be from 8:45am to 9:45am. PK is due down at 8:30am.

Just a reminder that the first sportif of the season rolls out of Portlaoise Equestrian Centre on Sunday 9th February at 10:00 a.m.

Online Registration is now closed, but you can register on the day from 8:30 a.m. All cyclists need to have a Cycling Ireland License or a one day license can be purchased on the day for €5.

Paul Kimmage will be there to meet eveyone and he will cycle the route, so it's a great chance to meet him.

Proceeds are in aid of the Laois Men's Shed Organisation.

The weather is due to be cold, but this is a great chance to test your winter training ahead of the opening of the racing season. We look forward to seeing you there.

Heading there from Lucan (Dublin), can take one person + bike with me if anyone is stuck for transport. I'm goin to do 60k route, hopefully weather won't be too bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

Looking forward to this now, hopefully there'll be a tail wind up from Ballyragget and when we turn at Emo for home I'll be happy to let Dathi BC and his club mates have the honour of leading us home down the old N7.

I'll be in Headstrong gear with a boards winter cap and buff, give me a shout out if you see me.

Great - looking forward to meeting you. I'll spend my day going up to people and saying "Are you nilhg?"

I'll be one of the pacers of the 25km/h to 28 km/h group, so you'll probably be well up the road!

I'm due to be doing a flying thing I got as a present tomorrow but won't know till the morning if the weather allows it to go ahead. If it doesn't then I'm thinking I'll head down. Won't know will about 8:30. Maynooth based.

Just ask any of the Headstrong contingent for John, they'll point me out.

I wouldn't say I'll be too far away from your group, we'll see what the other lads from the club want to do in the AM.

Is there a 'not quite 25-28kph but getting there on the flat' group? Or a 'bringing his hybrid because a road bike with no mudguards will be a bit obnoxious' group? :-)

I will be there and planning on hiding in the controlled group. I was on those roads during the week in the wind and I am looking for an easy tow tomorrow.

Thanks to all the Boardsies who traveled to our event today. I hope the rain shower just after roll out didn't dampen your spirits too much.

It was a pleasure to have Mr. Kimmage with us today. I think it's fair to say he was more than happy to talk to anyone who wanted a word with him. I personally saw him sign a few books, and have his photo taken.

Really enjoyed the spin, I wasn't brave enough to go for 100km but still very happy with my performance:-)
