Exercise after anorexia/ 7 minute workout app

Ok,so I'm 5'4 female and just been weight restored after Anorexia Nervosa (47kg).

I used to be so flexible (could do the splits), could run 6km, walk 10km, lift 6kg kettlebells, do 500 skips a day, but from being in hospital for 3 months my flexibility and fitness levels have dropped significantly.

(NOT interested in losing weight and I have a strong knowledge of nutrition so I know I'm going to have to up my kcal intake) ...

I'm joining the gym to tone up,get fit, lean (not lost weight!!) and strong. Any advice on a regime to start with? I'm waaay to shy to do a proper assessment but like I said I'd like to work on whatever strengthens me and gets me flexible to start back ballet when I go back to college.

Also does anyone have the 7 minute workout app on their phones? I bought it for like 1.30. Is it effective? after doing it twice in one day my legs were a bit sore the next day. I find it good!

Last thing: what foods are handy to eat half an hour before the gym?

I often take a protein shake, eat a banana and have a cup of coffee. Sometimes i just eat dinner - really whatever works into your schedule and your overall diet is probably grand.

If you want to get strong you need to lift heavy stuff, to get fit try some metcons and to get supple try mobility based workouts or yoga maybe.

Have you a rough idea of what you would like to do? (what do you enjoy)

    Ballet, innit.

With the caveat that your return to exercise is supervised by your doctors/therapists I suppose bone density is an issue given the damage done by anorexia. Lifting weights would be of assistance in building this back up.

This is almost a medical issue so I don't even feel comfortable suggesting this. Exercise can so easily be a trigger for all your control issues etc.

Just make sure you keep up your recovery and ensure none of the old patterns are re-emerging.

I think the ability to be happy in yourself no matter your physical condition is the most important thing.

I was going to post along the lines of what kevpants just did. I hope you are going into this with the right attitude, and the right mental strength. Exercise can become a subsitute for obsessive eating patterns and you need to ensure you wont get caught up in that trap. Your description of what you used to do rings alarm bells for me (500 skips a day) as it sounds just like the behaviour you need to avoid. So don't attempt to go back to that, and keep the support around you that you have used to conquer your eating issues.

If you want to do ballet, then the best thing to do are ballet related exercises.

Don't be shy about an assessment they've seen every body shape/personality going!! You should get an assessment and make goals with a gym instructor they can show you good strength conditioning exercises you can do in whatever gym you go to. As long as you eat a healthy balanced diet with an excess of calories (or whatever the dietician recommended) and you'll gain muscle tone no bother!

Like stated, I would be very careful about going back to exercise this soon - you have your whole life.
If you were just out of the hospital from treratment, and you have the go ahead from those who treat you, okay, but it could be too soon.

The spectrum of disroders is very very grey and not only exists with the diagnosis relm.

There is a high chance that exercise will be a replacement for the extra food

If you do not feel mentally fully rested and at peace with food and exercise, I would suggest leaving it a while longer. The world wont end, nobody will die, there are decades for you to exercise, maybe waiting a while would be a smarter move.

If you feel at peace (3 months is not all that long imho and from what iv dealt with through working with people), and you have full medical sign off - start GENTLE. 7 minute workout is a gentle way to start, as is yoga

You mention pain in the legs the next day - remember the goal is not to feel pain, but to ENJOY.

Been happy will add more years onto your life, and the opposite will have the opposite effect.

You have one life. Why not be happy :)
