    Who's it going to be?

The Six Nations this year look as unpredictable as ever. Wales have undoubted talent and are favourites given their exploits in the past two years and experienced, successful coach. However, the injuries woes of Davies, Roberts and possibly Gethin Jenkins could be major spanners in the works.

England have been on the rise over the past few years with a young squad and an effective game plan, but will be without the likes of Manu Tuilagi, Alex Corbisiero, Tom Croft and Geoff Parling.

For France, Philippe Saint-André seems as uncertain as ever about his preferred team, with Michalak and Trinh-Duc dropped from the squad.

Italy, who have been consistently improving under Jacques Brunel, will no doubt be boosted by the return of Bergamasco after a year on the sidelines, and will be high in confidence after schooling France and Ireland this time last year.

Scotland will be hoping that players like Hogg, Maitland, and Gray can help build on last year's tournament, in which they came third, but they may feel the absence of Murray up front.

Which leaves Ireland. It would be difficult to overstate the loss to the team associated with the absence of O'Brien. Who will be the one to try and fill his boots? There are other questions around back-up options at 13. Will this tournament be an opportunity to look at other options in this position, or does BOD need to play every match? Who are the other options? What about the front row - will we see the rise of Moore? And who will partner POC? McCarthy, Toner and Touhy have been in fine form, while Ryan and Henderson are coming back from injury. Who will be chosen of Gilroy, Fitzgerald, Earls, Zebo, Kearney, McFadden and Bowe (if he makes it back) on the wings?

Questions aside, there is plenty to be positive about. We have a relatively clean bill of health, with SOB and Strauss being the only major absences, and excellent backup options in most positions. Not to mention the presence of Joe the-almighty-one Schmidt at the helm. I'm undoubtedly biased, but definitely excited about what this tournament has in store for us.

    Discuss!

P.S. I realise there was a recent thread on who will win, but there was a serious lack of logos and tables to underscore the momentousness of the competition :P. I just can't get properly excited now until I see logos and tables. I hope that's ok.

We always say "It depends what French side turns up".... It's beginning to become that way for us. I would love a bit more stability and consistency in our approach. No better man than Joe

Not happy with the six day turn-around for the Welsh game and with them playing Italy at home the week before.

It's the first two weekends of the tournament, the schedule shouldn't be an issue. We will be as fresh as we will be all tournament so if we lose to Wales it won't be because of the turn around.
Their extra day will involve the travelling to Dublin we don't have to do as we play Scotland at home.

I thought that too, but then I read this http://www.espnscrum.com/ireland/rugby/story/210745.html

I'd imagine it would make more sense to wait until after the H Cup games next weekend, but then that might be cutting it close to the Wolfhounds game on the 25th.

Bowe's most likely not going to be available this weekend

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-union/25711067

Won't leave a lot of time to stake a claim for the Scotland match

Reckon it has to be Fitz and Earls in his absence.

If we can beat Wales in Week 2 we can make a serious go of it. If we do that, it'll be because we're up to speed on Joe's plan.

Ideally (and given SOB is out :(), I'd like to see a 23 of:

    Healy, Best, Ross, POC, Ryan, POM, Henry, Heaslip, Murray, Sexton, Fitzgerald, Marshall, BOD, Bowe, Kearney;
McGrath, Cronin, Moore, McCarthy, Ruddock, Reddan, Jackson, Zebo

I see they've got Warburton, Roberts and Davies back in there. They look quite a bit stronger with those names in there. Can't harm their chances at all!

I can't see why he would be?

Remember he's only started 6 games all season and all of them in the Rabo.

He's alot of potential but isn't ready for International rugby just yet.

Ah I would've liked to have seen him with the Wolfhounds. Maybe having five outhalves in the squad would have been a bit OTT though. It would be good if they had him around the camp unofficially anyway.

Records show that France won every tournaments following a Lion's tour since the beginning of the pro era. 1998,2002,2006, 2010 with 3 Grand Slam so I'm surprised they don't get voted a bit more ;)

With an unusual longer preparation period for les bleus before the first match I believe they will be ready to take on a weaken England especially with the boost of confidence given by the 2 wins of Toulouse over the Sarries in the Hcup.
If France beat England they have a great chance of winning the tournament.

Plus PSA desperatly needs results and I believe he will get them. The last time the team was under pressure to perform was in autumn 2012 to get in the first 4 for the WC draw and they delivered in fashion.

I'm betting on France this year. although that's the same bet for me every year :D

This is exactly my thinking too. They've not had the distraction in their camp of losing their players to a Lions tour.

That's a mad statistic! I'd still wonder how important having players involved in a Lions tour the previous year is as a variable compared to other factors, like coaching, injuries, form in the lead-up.

Edit: Then again some of those factors could be linked to the Lions tour. Intriguing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Can't see France winning it this year, just have too much to get in order. The need to find the correct pivots (halfbacks) and then they'll be a world class team again.

Plisson is a very promising out half. He has already put Morné Steyn on the bench ( of course Steyn deserves some rest after the 4 Nations but you would have expected him having more game time ). Good hands, clever distribution and runs good lines with a good boot as well. really looking forward to see him at this level.
Bonneval is a talent as well just as his father was back in the 80s in the bleu Jersey. Good attacking full back with speed and great lines. He will be a good contender to Dulin Jersey.
Burban is a work horse. A very physical flanker who tackles hard and is often first to arrive in the ruck zone.

Good to hear about a promising player coming through at 10. It seems to be an area where France has been lacking in recent years.

I think it could be an exciting game between Ireland and France, surely we can't have a draw for the third year in a row. If you could beat England and Wales along the way that would be appreciated :D Bonne chance!

I believe Wales will lose at twickers but will be hard to beat in Cardiff. Could end up being a final day point contest between France and Wales on the last day. If that's the case it will be hard for Ireland on the day but if Wales have a chance on the last day to make it 3 tournaments on the trot they will be tough to stop.

Joubert twice for us, and Owens for the Italy game. Pity. Would've liked him for Twickers.

Walsh to ref us again against France. Say what you will about him but I actually like him. He makes some monumental mistakes but one thing is I like how much he talks to the players, especially at scrum time, he's very clear about what he wants, unlike Poite. Thankfully we don't have Poite for any of the games.

I don't mind Walsh at all but would like to have Owens a bit more. Far and away the best ref IMO.

The year after the Lions tours the French are at home to England. The English usually beat them in England but struggle to do so in France, I'd say this is more important than what happened on the Lions tour.

I don't know where England are better than us in the squad really. Having Tuilagi back if he makes it for some of the games will make a big difference.

See very little chance of them losing in Scotland though.

If we ignore the fact that we have been playing with no consistency over the past few years, and look solely at the players that are available and their respective coaches, as well as the home/away dynamic, there isn't really much reason not to be optimistic. We have a relatively clean bill of health, some very good players, and a proven coach who's shown glimpses of where he's hoping to bring the team.

3 votes out of 69 for Wales, only 1 more than for Italy! Will we ever give them the respect they deserve?

By voting for England I'm disrespecting Wales? Interesting thought process

It is odd how its always the french english and us who are favourites, yet the welsh so often prevail.....maybe its just their small player base that makes us doubt them? clearly their first 15 is class. but once they get injuries they have problems.

P.S. I realise there was a recent thread on who will win, but there was a serious lack of logos and tables to underscore the momentousness of the competition :P. I just can't get properly excited now until I see logos and tables. I hope that's ok.

 haha not to worry, I prefer the logos myself. Good post.

Leaving aside the people who will vote for Ireland even in the event of a mass extermination that killed off every professional rugby player in the country, it's hardly shocking that England and France are hoovering up the votes. There's a reason nobody has won the championship 3 times in a row.
