I heard something rather curious on Newstalk this morning - unfortunately my google-skills are insufficient to find a link to the story.

Essentially it was about a few catholic orders in Ireland (I believe the Franciscans were one of them, but could be wrong) starting a campaign to make Irish people treat the name "Jesus" with more reverence again.
The feeling seems to be that using the name as an expression of surprise, slight annoyance, anger, joy or any other kind of emotion the way many if not most Irish are wont to do is not showing proper respect. So they're aiming at changing that.

I had to admit, I giggled.
It seems a rather futile quest, given the diminishing influence of the church in general and religious orders in particular, and for something which seems rather... well, petty, to be frank.

What are your thoughts? Is that a campaign that's worthwhile to persue? Or a bit of a storm in a tea cup?

And if anyone can find a link to it, I'd really appreciate it! :)

the amount of "holy" swear words and phrases we have should seen as a positive by the church as a sign of their influence over the people of Ireland over the years.

I think this might be what you had in mind OP:

    http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/65588/galway-franciscans-and-poor-clares-celebrate-launch-of-www.holyname.ie

Essentially people doing their best to encourage people to be a bit more thoughtful before they drop the J-bomb into random conversation.

Perfectly understandable if you look at it from their point of view OP. Hard to tackle the habits of a lifetime for many though.

My 4 year old doesn't know who Jesus is, but yesterday he fell off his bike and the first thing he said was Jesus Christ!

Next I'll get him trained up on Mohammed (reserved for stubbing his toe or injuries to testes due to the risky nature of this invocation)

I wonder how they feel about Spanish speaking countries, where Jesus is a relatively common name

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I don't think that's their issue. I think it's more the casual profane use of the name.

I don't know... I mean, imagine your friend had just broken up with a guy named Jesus cause he was cheating on her, and she is now calling Jesus a bastard and f*cking loser and whatever else might come to mind in such a situation...

We had a Jewish science teacher in school whose favourite swear word was exactly that. What are the Franciscans going to do about that? :pac:

I used to work with a chinese girl (not religious) who despite having the thickest chinese accent imaginable, would always let out a pure dub "jiaayyysus" whenever surprised.

No relevance to the story, but it made me chuckle

As long as they aren't pushing for any sort of legislation on the issue, and as long as they don't do anything thats likely scare the bejaysus out of young kids like the pro life nutters then their campaign doesn't bother me at all. I can't see it being very effective tho.

In utter exasperation, I'd often utter

'Sweet mother of the Devine Jesus'

... Which I think is quite respectful?

Isn't "jaysus" more common in Ireland? Does that count?

Now here's a question : If you decided to be respectful (or whatever you want to call it ;) ) and stop using religious names as expressions of high emotion, what words are there to move to instead?

I'm not going to start saying "dang" and "heck", seriously. So what else is there?

Storm in a teacup tbh. I could've said "Jesus wept", but I figure we're all done with the Jesus puns at this stage :D

Plenty of priests I know who curse like they're at a sailors convention, it raised an eyebrow the first few times, but then you remember that these are people, just the same as you or I, and that these are just conversational expressions rather than actual blessings or name taking in vain or any of the rest of it. It's when they don the robes and the whole lot that the Jesus stuff is "sirrus bi'nezz!"... :P

I read the OP and was reminded of a reply I made in a thread the other night when I was accused of hypocrisy by another poster -

Basically you can use anything to score petty points, like blasphemy or asking people to think twice before they make a meaningless utterance, but inevitably that's just going to lead to a point where people end up not being able to take you seriously any more when you've got something that actually might be worth listening to!*

*I say might, because let's be frank here, it's very rare the Modern RCC Hierarchy has anything to say worth listening to these days! :p
