Former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon has died following a long illness.

He was widely expected to begin clearing Israel out out the West Bank and a planned disengagement from Gaza shortly before suffering a stroke in 2006 which put an end to those plans.

How different things might have been today if he remained in power.

He was 8 years in a coma. Thats quite sad.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    Sigh...........

How many pages before this decends into an Israel Bashing/ Terrorist Nursery/ Apartheid thread.

R.I.P Dude, you had a family. I feel sorry for their loss.

Not much else to say beyond that but I'm sure others will try.

He did make some fairly questionable decisions that undoubtedly negatively impacted on the lives of countless others so I guess I'll feel sorry for his family but try to avoid the 'carte blanche' massive outpouring of sympathy.

Sad to see anyone pass away.

I think the people who rejoice at anothers death are sick. It's normally the type of person who considers themselves liberal defenders of human rights too.

Why is it sad when said person was responsible for killing thousands of innocent civilians? I bet if it was your family he murdered you wouldn't have the same opinion as above.

Mass murderers and war criminals dying is a good thing.

How anyone can dispute that is beyond belief.

Not really - we all die in the end.

But some deaths aren't worth half a crocodile tear.

Bit of a difference between rejoicing in it and simply not giving a crap

    Meaningless drivel
Sad to see anyone pass away

Only if you're totally incapable of judging a person on their actions and instead base all of your opinions on the faux grief of others. Were you sad to see any other war criminals pass away in your time?

Yes I do believe in human rights, such as freedom of speech, freedom of the presses, freedom of religion and sexual orientation etc. (incidentally, all available in Israel but denied to the citizens of neighbouring countries)

    But I digress...

What I find ironic is thd bloodthirsty attitudes that are often expressed by people on the left who like to think of themselves as true 'love one another' types. They always cone out in droves to spit bile and venom on the passing of a sick old man. Same happened with Thatcher.

You don't see that kind of thing from the othef side. When mandiba died those who opposed him maintained a dignified respectful silence.

Well seeing as it's used as a term of respect of Nelson Mandela, it's kind of important to get it right.

Sorry, but that's the biggest load of nonsense I've read in a while.

What exactly does the whole 'left-vs-right' thing have to do with it? Plenty of people on both sides of the political spectrum would strongly criticise Sharon, just as they would (and did) regarding Mandela.

You seem to believe that people on the 'right' should automatically defend Sharon =/ Which is completely without logic or reason.

People should be judged on their actions and the context of those actions, not on some woolly headed notion of how they shared some ideologies with you.

Why? Did he murder your family? Is that why you're cheerleading the death of another person?

He will have a mixed legacy depending on your view point but no doubt people (already happening here) will use his death as a political football to air their tired tunnelled views perpetually.

It's not joy (speaking for myself) - it's the grim consideration that no matter what the man did to others, he's still mortal, and he has no control over his historical legacy.

Where did I cheerlead his death? You see you have to put your feet in the shoes of the Palestinians to fully understand the hatred for this man that is why I am asking you the question. Are you going to answer it by the way?
