    Well folks,

Have any of you used the SH bull SBU and what were your experiences?

I only know that he is dead now and there was a rush on to buy his semen so a friend of mine in an AI station got me 10 straws.

    Thanks for reading!

Great stuff, I have 10 straws of his which I was told were "like gold dust"

I only own two cows at present, one is a Blue Grey (SHxAA) and the other a SHxLM, would he be a good bull to put here and hope for a heifer or should I go terminal sire straight away with maternal cows like these?

Do his calves square up and look strong or are they slight?

I don't want to use him, get two bull calves and realise they are below par!

Use those straws wisely on your best breeding animals. He is strongish build but crossed with the right breed they will be good calves.www.donedeal.ie/beefcattle-for-sale/pure-bred-non-registered-bull/6201725
On donedeal may help you. If any straws left i would love to have onewww.donedeal.ie/beefcattle-for-sale/pure-bred-non-registered-bull/6201725

On the river, what do you mean by used on the right breed?

Are the aforementioned good for him or would you go more terminal?

I saw that bull on donedeal before, I am not overly familiar with home bred SH bulls, is he a good one?

Sbu is a replacement specialist which would be a good cross for charolais or belgium blue bred bringing alot of milk into bloodline. It all depends what you want so be careful with your decision.

Sound, the two cows I have are already full of milk so to me it seems silly to try inject more into them.

I think they may well be getting a terminal bull like TVR or FSZ!

I am very tempted to put them in calf to a polled sexed female SM bull of powerful genetics to get real size into my replacements as well as all the other benefits of SM.

One could spend all day thinking about this but once she starts bulling you want to already know and be happy with your decision!!

:( Poor choice . zbf and is4 progressive genetics have better width and shape

I only have 2 cows in my Dad's herd though so I need sexed female every time, cant be messing around with bulls, Progressive don't offer that with these bulls, unless I am mistaken! He is polled as well which is a huge bonus going forward!

A perception of Poor conception rates, I'd guess.

He didn't say, but I'd imagine poor conception, high price, & unproven

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

plenty proven. They are all sexed by cogent in England who have been at that game for years

Has it been proven that frozen sexed semen gives the same conception rates as normal frozen semen?

no. It doesn't but its not a million miles off. I does have to be handled right though

Can you put a figure on how far behind it is at the moment and how long it might be before there is no difference between the two?

    Hi Rabbit,

These are a set of twins by SBU from a sim X fr heifer. The photos were taken when they were 8 months. Really quiet heifers with great growth and should make good replacements. I'm really happy with them, wish I could say the same for the docans in that field!!

Well, they've grown a good bit since September, now around 380kgs. Will bull them around march/April when they are 15/16 months. They are cycling away every 3 weeks but holding off. Will give them both Fronfedw Arawn (DAQ) by far the easiest calving bull we've ever used and calves are a class act

The Ba bull Arawn's AI code is S984. I was tempted to chance a few straws for heifers, as a replacement for Landais. But I went for the Lim Dubai (THZ) instead.

I would think the Ba outta them twins would be lovely stock, all goin well.

Lovely stock Shepherd. Would'nt mind having them in the yard. What breed is DAQ?

Sorry, force of habit up here in the north, I mean Blonde. I suppose the plan for the past 3 years has been to breed maternal bulls to my best cows to build up a base of cows I can breed replacements from, but these should also rear a good calf to terminal sire also. IS4 has also given me a few lovely quiet heifers as has the SA bull Whitebog Convenor that is also really easy calved. I work off the farm too so easy calving is a must for me.
What limousin bull would you recommend for breeding milky females? Has anyone used the bull Mereside Favori from PowerfulGenetics? He looks good but would be worried about calving ease.

I have 14 cows in calf to favori (FZF), first one due on march 1st. Can't see him being hard calved, think he's 6% CD at 52 % reliability. Used OZS last year, have 8 heifers which should make decent cows. He's supposed to be good for milk.
Whitebog convenor is a savage looking bull. Is he €30 a straw tho?

When I bought him from Cogent he was £30 for sexed semen - got 2 heifers from 3 inseminations so I guess sexed semen works sometimes. Again, really small calves at birth but grow away like mad. Have one calving next month to Fronfedw Arawn at 2years and she's as big as some of my cows. I've plenty of plain animals about me too in case you think I'm being a bum. I like this forum to find out what is working for others. Maybe you'll post picture of favori calf when it arrives all being well.
ps..... 2 bulls I would stay away from are Lenagh Equaliser and Doncombe Aga Khan - cow killers even when your sitting with them!

Yeah, will do. I like OZS calves, very easy calved, good temperament, good shape. I'll try and put up a few pics soon, I'm not great at that stuff.

Both Eurogene bulls here. We've used both but not much. Equaliser is breeding very well, leaving super stock.
Have you used Ambertine brigadeer (ABI) at all?

No, how is he doing for ye? Just have had bad experience with those 2 bulls, agreed calves turned out decent but have had better calves with less hassle at the calving!

Have 12 calves off him so far, six bulls and six heifers. Had to pull one bull out of a fat lazy cow that went 26 days overdue but he was easy enough got out. He's a bit harder calved than OZS but he's not a hard calving bull. Wouldn't put him on heifers tho.
I put some photos on the picture thread. I think his calves have good length, frame and shape and temperament seems good so far.

We have / are, 1 off BBX needed op due to cow pelvis size. 1 off LMX no trouble & 1 off LMX due Nov. Reduced diets with rolled oats from 6 week prior to calving.
We find heifer & feeding can be more the problem than the bull
