You've gone this far, keep going to see what happens.

BTW, you can give new information (apart from the email) as there is little chance he even opened your CV.

Lets see how quick they look for money/bank details.

The details requested are as follows.

    Full name: Andrew xxxx xxxxxxx
Full Address: 19 Shop Street, Galway, Ireland
    City: Galway.
    Home phone: 091 nnn nnn
    Age: 27

    Kind Regards,
    Michael.

Address and telephone number is from the well known bar called 'Taffes' in Galway City! Name has been changed too, wonder if he will notice :p

No harm to keep an eye out for his email address: B]MOD-SNIPPED[/B.

MOD-NOTE: In fairness to the lucky people who work in Taffes, and any lads around with that name, I've taken the name and phone no out of this post. Was very tempted to leave the email addy in, but it is against boards.ie policy and all ... Thsi is not at all a criticism of what the OP did IRL - but boards have good reasons for not wanting those details in post.

That name I put in was fake and has nothing to do with anything. Telephone number was Taffe's alright so I shouldn't have added that.

Have'nt had a reply of Sam since anyway :P

These scam artists can be a great laugh. I had a fella contact me once, I dragged it out for weeks. Told him a deal breaker my end was a personalized Christmas card from him - the nutter was going to send this as well.....

Check is perfectly fine. Americanised form of cheque. Why is cheque so definitively correct? It's just semantics really.

Avoid it or play with it
    A model for a 419 Bait opportunity
For those who think it is any thing but a scam ,, I strongly suggest you avoid ever using a computer !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,036 ✭✭✭murphym7

I hope you keep this one going OP, it could be very entertaining. We could all guess where the next part of the story goes.

I think the next twist in the story would be from you to Sam letting him know you didn’t receive the cheque. Sam will then email and apologies profusely, stating he will send another out straight away. At which point old Sam boy, will ask you to go and buy a few things and ship them to Nigeria (to a client probably). And then take payment out of the cheque when it eventually arrives, there will be a little more about trust etc….

Do please keep it going, could be a laugh. If you have the link to the Gumtree job advert post it and we can get a few more “Applicants” sent his way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Ethical Ethnic

While your specific scam is not exactly a 419

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/419_Scams

    Same rules apply

Google 419 eater and Butch Driveshaft to get some tips
Basic rules .. be as slow as you can in your reply's think hard on what you want to achieve .. and let the fun begin ..

Reply to same add from new mail address .. use a well known name like Enda Kenny just to see how dumb you opponent actually is :)

    Enjoy

PS I guess he could be a real employer ,, but seriously would you want to work for a guy who Job adds on Gumtree and who forgets how to spell his name !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭crazyderk

I think this works along the lines of he send you the cheque along with extra money on top of your salary so you can buy these items you need, he will ask you to send the items along with any change left over from the purchases to him and then a couple of weeks later the cheque bounces and your out of pocket

Well there isn't a job at all, in America or otherwise I'd imagine.

That's beside the point made about the spelling. The location of the position wasn't what upset the poster; moreso the spelling. I've a feeling he thought there was no other alternative way to spell it. The location is moot.

Edit: just realised it was yourself Frash who replied.

    1. Let the Garda Siochana in on it,
    AND/OR
    2. Tell him you can't start for a few weeks for one reason or another. Then ask him if he could meantime see his way to sending you a €20 note just to tide you over until you get going. When you've spent the money tell him you're filing for bankruptcy, and tell him to be sure to get his name on the list of creditors. You might even recommend a good solicitor to him.

Do send something like this and share loads of (fake) really personal stuff. Like the itchy groin area infliction you have etc…

And do the change the email address to something like this: smallneatvagina@gmail.com as posted before, hilarious.

But most of all, do play along and say you haven’t got the cheque yet to see what his next play is, the next one will be good from him I’d say.

I'm feeling a distributed 419 Baiting session a brewing ... this could be fun.

Anyone interested should see the best practises guidelines form 419 eaters or Butch Driveshaft before embarking.

While 419ing typically refers to Nigerian scams, the same rules apply these job scammers.

IE : they want to rip off your money, identity or both

So, set up a mail account , linked to a linked in account, with some kind of fake on line presence and a photo ,,, a RTG mobile number, call recording ability (makes it easy to post the funny conversations that will inevitably happen) a few dummy job references , and a script which to follow.

Remember these guys work off a script too, but thankfully a lot of these guys are incredibly stupid so just think your one carefully.

Keep in mind Ireland is a small island ,, and there are typically 2 types of people who do this kind of scam.
419baiters refer to them as LADS (dumb ass script followers) & VLADS (Smart and often dangerous crims) ... if you suspect you are dealing with a VLAD be careful...

But as this clown seems to be using the local pub as his scamming office it sounds like he's a LAD ....

Getting some one in the Pub as he takes the bait would be priceless ..

Lots of help-on the from Mr Driveshaft ..
