Whey Protein and Palpitations

    Hi all,

TL;DR - Can a high intake of Whey Protein cause palpitations and some anxiety?

I've hugely increased my protein intake, and changed brands, and since then I'v appeared to be getting palpitations and slight anxiety.

I do have a history of being very sensitive to things - mainly caffeine -as a cup of coffee would give me shakes and palpitations.

I used to take Gold Standard protein and I would only take one a day, after a work out, and sometimes 2 a day. I would never take any if I wasn't in or going to the gym that day and I never seemed to have any problems with it. Plus I take creatine capsules the last ages - I go on courses - and these never seemed to create any problems, so that should be them ruled out? Unless the Gold Standard wasn't causing anything because of the little intake.

But now with the MaxiMuscle and upped intake since last week I've noticed the above, I started taking one in the morning, one after work, and one before bed. I googled some of the ingredients, and sucralose which is a sweetener in it seems to be the only ingredient with the side effects that can cause panic like agitation i.e. the above palpitations etc.

Note that I did have a high caffeine intake this weekend, which I rarely do as usually I would only have a can of Diet Coke up and down, but I had coffee and lots of coca-cola this weekend.. could this of carried over and I'm feeling the effects now?

Would you have this problem if you were just getting protein from food or is it only from whey?

No problems like this from food it seems. I'd usually have chicken fillets orother meat, cheese, dairy and 2 eggs a day, which is a decent amount of protein from food. As I said I did go on a rare caffeine binge the weekend, could be hitting me now.

Could be. I would guess it would more than likely that than the whey but ya never know.

    Maybe speak to your doctor.

I remember ages ago, months now, I asked them (my doctor) about creatine and protein and they said it would be fine and shouldn't cause any problems.

I might go off a week next week and on again and see what happens.

Some whey protein powders can cause a bad dose of indigestion that can feel like palpatations. The anxiety might be a result of that, indirectly, rather than directly from the whey. Drop the whey you're taking and if it still happens, then go to your doctor. Not all whey protein will cause it though.

    Thanks, hopefully that's it.

My shaker is fecked actually so I've been just stirring it in pint glass and it does be bitty, so I take it that would increase indigestion?

Shouldn't make a difference. It could just be that it's a poor form of whey.

both expensive - try theproteinworks, bulkpowders or myprotein. You'll find referral codes on here if you do a quick search for a few quid off.

So much this. But I bet it's not the protein. Are there fructooligosaccherides in the ingredient list? Because these usually not well digested, cause a gas build up in the small intestine which gets trapped and causes palpitations. Having little other food at this time would compound the problem also.

Chromium can also cause the blood sugar to go too low, so that could be a cause as well if you are taking that.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I bought whey protein from myprotein and was suffering slight palpitations yesterday evening after taking it post workout.

Never had this with any other whey protein before. I got 2 varieties of it so might give the other one a go tonight to see if it happens

    This stuff was MaxiMuscle.

I went back to Gold Standard and it was much nicer and easier on the body, didn't get any indigestion or palpitations with it. Although I'm kinda gone off protein shakes now to be honest.. More so have added protein foods and creatine for workouts.
