Im not up in these things but would 256MB not be rather small? maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject could chip in? arent most thing like at least 512mb or 1 gb ram

I'm not too sure either. Maybe the fact that this is a screen mirroring device would mean that ram and processing power don't need to be massive? Not sure, maybe someone else knows better. I'd imagine it would need to handle wireless data transmission very well to be of any use though.

Peculiarly, these things aren't even Android dongles. They don't boot to Android, they show a screen saying "waiting for connection" until they a device mirrors to them. Kinda like the chromecast (which I also have) but cheaper and does true screen mirroring rather than the stream copying that chromecast currently does. (and yes I know chromecast does screen mirroring in beta at the mo, but its dreadfully laggy...)

Will this dongle work for my Samsung LED TV? Will this dongle connect to my mobile broadband hotshot to allow streaming services like netflix work? Thanks in advance :)

probably not, my understanding is that if you have a device that can use the hotshot this will then clone whatever is on the screen of that device.

Miracast definitely there on 2013 model, situation is confused on the 2012 model, looks like some custom ROMs have got it working. Check out xda dev to see what current status is.

What route does the traffic on this take?
Is it Device speaks to wifi router and wifi router speaks to the HDMI miracast device and thus what is happening on the phone is displayed on the tv?

That might sound incredibly stupid so forgive if it does!

No, it's a direct connection, and yes it mirrors the phone/tablet screen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracast

I bought this Miracast dongle for £16.35 on eBay a few weeks back looks to be similar to (but not the exact same as) the OP's.

Got it last week but haven't used it much as my Motorola Moto G won't have Miracast until the KitKat update in the next week or two. (It can be enabled on the 4.3 rom but I am not bother to go messing with it)

The early firmware on these have connection problems, particularly with the Nexus 4 and the connection will keep dropping after only a few seconds.

I had to flash mine with updated firmware to get it to work with my son's N4. It wasn't a big deal to do do it but if you are a technophobe beware.

The function of these dongles is somewhat different to the chromecast. With this you are just mirroring the screen of your phone or tablet to your TV, the best way to think of it is as a wireless HDMI cable.

Thanks Kenny. I understand what wifi direct is alright so that is handy to know.

And I imagine that obviously one could have wifi streaming to the android phone while also simultaneously streaming to the miracast device yes?
I am using an S3 you see!

In theory, yes. Not sure if it'll work reliably in the real word though..

I've a galaxy s3, would this work with it? Is it just a plug and play type device i.e it just goes into hdmi slot on TV and then mirrors what's on the phone? What's picture quality like for Netflix or streaming in general?

Tried it with my Nexus 4 quickly, it worked for a brief time then lost connection.

Connects fine and works with my Acer Liquid E2 Duo phone using wireless display (Miracast)

Also connected to my HP Touchpad & used BubbleuPNP on DNLA(iOS) connection. Seems once something is being transmitted it doesn't like you doing much else as trying to navigate to another file caused the connection to drop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,638 ✭✭✭moodrater

..and does it work reliably now?

Moto g doesn't have miracast in kitkat, isnt certified and will probably never officially get support so you'll have to wait for a custom rom.

Reliability is only partially the devices fault, miracast spec like dlna spec is too loose to be of any use so even if it works for him with nexus 4 it may not work for you, that goes for big name branded products too.

Heres a short example of test conducted by a german magazine.

I have just bought a Nexus 7 2013, will that work with a £15 dongle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 monkry

I got mine Monday. Very fast delivery from China in fairness.

I'm not impressed with the miracast at all. At best, the video is watchable but not very smooth, even 480p stuff. Most of the time is been totally useless though with the picture constantly breaking up.

DNLA on the other hand is excellent. I've used it with up to 720p files and it's perfect for those, I don't have any 1080p stuff to test. Skifta didn't work so well, but bubbleupnp plays everything I've thrown at it very smoothly.

Overall, I'm very pleased with it because it's worth the 13 euro for the dnla alone. Pity the miracast is so poor because it would be nice to be able to cast Netflix to my TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭CinSoots

I know this isn't about the model mentioned here but maybe some might be interested. I bought the Belkin Miracast device recently and it works perfectly streaming 1080p HD from a Nexus 7 and 4 to the TV. There is a tiny lag so that would rule out using it for games realistically but for streaming its the bees knees!!

Same thing happened with my Nexus 4 i have not tried it since

Played around with it a bit more last night:

Nexus 4 connects ok, works and then disconnects after about a minute.

My DX tablet (Cube something or other) seems to stay connected.

It would be ok for throwing a picture up on, dont think it would be much use for video (it worked but wasnt great)

I found a software update on freelanders site and managed to install it, but the version didnt seemt to change and performance didnt seem any better.

So it summary, it doesnt seem great, but sure its a bit of craic for the price

Have you tried the dnla? That works excellently, the miracast is rubbish.

Install bubbleupnp on your tablet and it will stream any files stored on your tablet very smoothly. Also install twonky beam and that will let you beam streaming video services over dnla too.

so is it possible to stream a website in decent quality (from a laptop) from these things or not?
(I already have a now tv box so don't need the media streaming as now tv with plex does that very well)
I want to be able to stream a website to tv for sports.

    Interesting article here...

    http://www.howtogeek.com/177145/wireless-display-standards-explained-airplay-miracast-widi-chromecast-and-dlna/

Basically Miracast looks like a failed standard at this point. Note thats Miracast and DNLA are two different technologies. DNLA allows sharing/discovery of local media to a compatible device - my understanding is the playing device is really playing the local media, it is the media being streamed not the display. Miracast on the other hand is really supposed to be like a wireless "cable", it is mirroring the display of the sending device and in no sense understands what is being mirrored.

Chromecast is something in between two, it basically communicates with compatible apps in a way that is like screen mirroring but then actually goes and sources the app's steam natively itself - this is very clever! So when you "cast" Netflix for example, it isn't trying to send a compressed picture from your computer/phone/ipad to the chromecast, it just tells chromecast where to find that stream on the internet. This has the advantage that once it gets going the quality should be as good as the device you are sending from. The problem with this approach (and why I am buying a miracast as well as my Chromecast) is that the Chromecast needs to understand the type of stream you are trying to use. So for example if the stream uses a particular plugin inside Chrome then it probably will not cast correctly - so none of the torrent based streaming clients like AceStream will work, even though they will play inside the Chrome browser. Obviously they could write a "cast to Chromecast" button for their native apps (as Netflix, Spotify and Pandora have done) but a lot of niche streamers haven't done that yet.

To answer your question - in theory, yes, if you can see it on your (miracast compatible) screen then you can sent it to a tv with this dongle attached. There are two caveats there, one the device must be miracast compatible, so Windows 8.1 if its a windows PC (and I've been putting of moving to 8.1 :( ), recent enough Android, not available for iOS devices. The second caveat is that, as outlined by the diagram posted above, Miracast is flakey bananas and sometimes just doesn't work for a particular combination of sending and receiving device :(

my dad loves the samsung galaxy tablet i got him for Christmas. He has found a few apps for streaming movies and i said i would see if there is a way to mirrior the tablet to the tv so he could watch them movies on the tv.

Excuse my ignorance, but as he uses the UPC wifi to stream the movies, would he have to disconnect from UPC to connect to this wifi dongle and so therefore it would not work to stream stuff to tv?

Would it then be only usefull to watch stuff actually stored on the tablet?

Good question! Miracast is based on WiFi Direct so it creates a direct WiFi connection between the two devices, no router actually needed.

For some early WiFi direct implementations making this connection did actually knock out the connection to the router but this shouldn't happen with miracast, it is designed to be used in exactly the type of scenario you are describing.

Does that have the "Allshare Cast" thingy that Samsung are calling their version of Miracast? Samgsung branding is very confusing, on my Sammy TV Allshare is actually their word for DNLA!

"Allshare mirroring", I thought the 5500 had it but it looks like you need the 6500 or 6700.

Don't have an apple device buti think miracast is an android thing? It's not very good anyway.

The dnla function works a lot better. search iTunes for a dnla or upnp app and you should be able to push videos/music to it using that.
