Loads of frames for $0.00 and a code glasses990 to give glasses for $9.90 I found that the code still knocked off $2 for orders under $9.90 so you can get a pair of glasses uncoated delivered for around €8 :D I've also found that when you order uncoated they come coated a lot of the time anyway.

Order uncoated as they arrive saying as a bonus they coated them.

Got Tommy Hilfiger glasses for 35. 180 in Specsavers.

Considered using this site before. Are they genuine frames or copies?

Can't imagine them registering their company in california if they were in the planning to sell fakes.

Wasn't expecting much but I recently got prescription glasses from them and was very impressed. Saved myself a good bit of money instead of buying from my usual opticians. Great selection too. I'd personally definitely recommend them.

Does anyone else find that the coating makes their glasses get dirty and smudgy very easily?

15 quid in specsavers for a test. Make sure to ask them for the results printed as they try a trick of keeping it to make you go back in.

Theres an option while buying that says you can upload a picture of your prescription. take a pic with your phone and your sorted. make sure you do this way.

What's the difference between coated and non? I've only ever had them coated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,074 ✭✭✭sok2005

I usually get regular coating but for my last order I got Premium Lens with EMI. Haven't received them yet but I will post here when I do and let you know the difference.
They should be here any day, hopefully!

    coating 4.95

Coatings are to provide scratch resitance and anti reflective properties. If you order non coated they seem to come coated anyway. Optician told me that 'non coated' is basically a scam as they come coated by default and to get non coated ones he would haveto make a special order and end up costing him a few cent more.

As far as I know the emi thing is a throw back to crt monitors that emitted high amounts of radiaton even then theres no evidence that the radiation is harmful. LCD screens emit tiny amounts in comparison to CRT.

"Like most electrical appliances, VDTs emit both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. These include visible light, ultraviolet, infrared, x-ray and radio frequency emissions. However, VDT emissions are often so low as to be unmeasurable or are found to be significantly below recommended safety levels. Numerous studies have been conducted to determine what effect, if any, radiation levels emitted from VDTs may have on workers' health. Repeated studies to date have failed to find any direct link between VDT use and radiation related general or eye health problems.(2,30-34) There is no evidence that radiation from VDTs contributes to the development of cataracts."

Did you get your premium with EMI lenses yet? If so did you notice any difference to the standard ones?

Sorry for not updating! I did get the glasses and what I noticed was my glasses didn't get as grubby as they do without the coating. I got it on pairs since.

Great thanks. I am putting in an order today and was deciding what coatings to add.

Sorry for picking up a real old thread.

Anybody used goggles4u.com recently or is there any alternative. And if so does anybody know delivery times? A family member is going to the U.S. for about a month and I was going to get glasses delivered to them while they are there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I have used Zenni Optical twice and they are excellent. I think the frames I got were like €45 or something and they were the most expensive on the site. http://www.zennioptical.com/

I have bought many, many pairs of glasses from multiple online companies. Namely Goggles4u, Firmoo and Zennioptical. In terms of quality, I have found it goes 1. Zenni 2. Goggles4u 3. Firmoo.

Zenni is the most expensive and you can get to 40-50USD easily for a nice pair. I have found recently that Specsavers and Visionexpress have some good budget glasses, so have a look there first.

Now if you have a high prescription, these online companies will generally always be cheaper for the more exotic lens types.

EDIT: Sorry, typo on which company was the most expensive!

I’ve used goggles4u a few times and never had an issue. Recently however I ordered from glasses direct and they were much better quality. They’re £49 including lenses but most are buy one get one free and you get £30 off your first order so 2 pairs of glasses for £19 - about €32 including delivery

No, you paid for it so it's yours and by law they must give you it on request

Specsavers wouldn’t give my oh her prescription despite asking a few times, they are robbing feckers too
She’s off to an Indy optition so might try goggles4u
    Specsavers can shag off

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I ordered glasses recently but I'm very blind, prescription of +6.75 with a big astigmatism in both eyes.

The only website who I could find who would make my prescription for a reasonable cost was firmoo

They were about €130 with a frame costing about 30 euros

Quality is grand. Not as good as my local independent optician but then I wouldn't see any change our of 300 euros for a pair from there, so if these glasses last half as long, it's still worth it for me.

I've ordered stronger prescriptions than that from goggles4u - even with high index lenses or super high index lenses they would be less that half that price.

If you used reading glasses a lot then ready readers are not nearly as good as prescription readers.

I also use selectspecs and I highly recommend them. It takes a while for your glasses to be glazed if you have a unique prescription (which I have), but they’ve always been very reliable. You can also track your glasses across all stages of the glazing process, which is handy.

I haven’t tried any the other companies listed in the other posts as I was looking for a specific designer frame; however selectspecs also stock their ‘own brand’ frames which are very reasonably priced.

They regularly have discount codes (although less frequently when compared to the past few years). iirc they usually have a code for Black Friday,

One thing I really like is that they offer advice on which lens thickness suits your prescription (rather than specsavers who just upsell you an expensive thinning service irrespective of your needs). This puts control into your hands as to how much the frames/lenses cost in total. All coatings (anti-scratch, UV etc) are free across nearly all the lenses types.

I alwaysget my prescription from Specsavers when I go for an eye-test every 2 years. I ask the optician themselves directly when I’m finished my eye exam. As stated above, you are entitled to a copy of your own prescription (I found this out via the citizens information website, when I find the link I’ll update this post); it’s handy to have for your own records anyway as it allows you to track your prescription across time.

One thing I do recommend is getting a PD (pupillary distance) ruler..... selectspecs have one on their website to buy (think it’s around a few pound or so) and an instruction video on how to measure your PD. This is vital as it ensures the focus of your frames is accurate.

Best of luck with you online glasses purchase :)

I had my new prescription from Specsavers recently with the PD values : R 36.8. L 34.2. Is this difference unusual ?

    That's normal.
Some/Most of them are made in Pakistan.
Sometimes goggles4u.co.uk is cheaper than goggles4u.com

Anti glare coating only reduces glare caused by the spectacle lenses it won’t reduce natural glare

Has anyone bought the premium coating with the hydrophilic coating? I’m wondering if it would help with fogging and the masks

Presuming it’s just standard anti glare with hydrophobic so more dust, static and finger print resistant. Will still fog up
    I’m afraid

I fold a tissue and put it under the top part of the mask (over the nasal bridge), pull down my glasses on top of the mask and tissue, no fogging.
